In September 2003, a tragedy unfolded in Auburn, California, when 17-year-old Justine Renee Vanderschoot suddenly disappeared from her home. Her remains were unfortunately discovered a few days later, shattering the hearts of her loved ones. Don Vanderschoot and the Family Continues to Fight to Prevent Teen Dating Violence
Don and Lynnette Vanderschoot were overjoyed to welcome their daughters, Christine and Justine Renee Vanderschoot, into the world. From a young age, their parents had always encouraged them to try their best to achieve their goals in life. Don had also been quite close to Justine’s boyfriend, Daniel Lee Bezemer, AKA Danny. According to reports, the father even helped him get his first job at an automobile dealership. However, things came crashing down on the early morning of September 2, 2003, when the family discovered that Justine was missing. It prompted Don and his wife to contact the authorities immediately, marking the beginning of an extensive search.
However, the search for Justine came to a heartbreaking end when, according to authorities, Daniel’s friend, Brandon Alexander Fernandez, confessed that Daniel had strangled her. Eventually, both Brandon and Daniel were taken into custody in September 2003. In February 2005, Brandon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, while Daniel pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. On March 9, 2005, they were sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and 25 years to life in prison, respectively. During the sentencing hearing, Don took the stand and stated, “Brandon and Danny, you’ll never be forgiven. You’ll rot in hell. There should be no parole, ever.” Since their sentencing, Don has attended every parole hearing for Daniel and Brandon.
Following the ordeal, Don and Lynnette dedicated their time to preventing teenage dating violence through their public speaking in schools. They are actively advocating for victims’ rights by sharing Justine’s story and working to ensure it does not happen to anyone else. Eventually, they partnered with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office and worked to advocate for a new state legislation, known as Justine’s Law or Assembly Bill 1071. In 2023, Justine’s Law was passed in California, requiring high schools statewide to provide teen dating violence prevention education. In February 2026, Don and his wife visited Oakmont High School once again to raise awareness of teen dating violence.
Lynnette Vanderschoot Keeps Justine’s Legacy Alive Through Education and Advocacy
Lynnette Vanderschoot was left completely devastated when her younger daughter, Justine, was taken away from her forever. While reminiscing about the 17-year-old, the mother expressed, “Little firecracker… Cheerleader, baseball, soccer. She was always on the go.” According to her, Justine often visits her and the family as a hummingbird. Speaking about the experience, Lynnette noted, “A lot of times when we’re… back here working in her garden… I’ll have a little hummingbird, and she’ll come right up to my face and I’ll — I’ll talk to her, and I think of her as she’s saying hi to me.”
While keeping Justine’s memories close to her heart, she and Don appeared on several podcasts together. In October 2025, Lynnette and Don were interviewed on the ‘Victim Justice Unveiled’ podcast, where they shared Justine’s story. Currently residing in Auburn, California, Lynnette’s life completely revolves around Don and Christine. Together, they always celebrate festive occasions like Christmas. The mother also loves spending meaningful time with other family members. Lynnette often enjoys making memories with her friends in her free time. Apart from that, she has chosen to keep further details of her professional life out of the spotlight.
Christine Vanderschoot Draws Strength From Her Partner and Parents
Although Christine and Justine were 18 months apart, the former described her younger sister as her best friend. They used to do everything together, but that changed when the 17-year-old was brutally killed. Since then, Christine has actively participated in several interviews and advocated for victims’ rights, just like her parents. In February 2026, she also joined them at Oakmont High School to educate high school students about what a healthy relationship looks like. Moreover, Christine and her family have always attended the parole suitability hearings of both Brandon and Daniel.
In December 2025, Christine was present when Daniel was denied parole for the third time. Before the ordeal completely changed her life, she was focused on building her career. She completed her initial education at Colfax High School but has decided to keep further details about her professional trajectory out of the public eye. She is currently living in Rancho Cordova, California, and leading a fulfilling life alongside her soulmate, David Thorsnes-Mueller. The couple took a step forward toward their shared future when they got engaged in November 2023.
From taking long drives to attending events together, they savor every moment they spend in each other’s presence. Besides that, Christine maintains a close relationship with Don and Lynnette. She never shies away from expressing her love for her parents and showcasing her gratitude toward them. Yet, not a moment passes that Christine doesn’t miss her sister. On March 30, 2026, during Justine’s 40th birthday, her sister expressed her grief and wrote, “Happy 40th Birthday, Sweet Justine! Your unwavering resilience inspires us daily. Your strength empowers us to keep fighting.” Despite the grief, Christine continues her healing journey with her loved ones by her side.
