Karin Cain Met James Craig After Coming Out of a Decades-Long Marriage
Karin Forsman Cain was born in 1973 in Pennsylvania, and her family moved to Austin, Texas, when she was just three years old. She completed her education there before eventually becoming an Orthodontist through her dedication. In adulthood, she crossed paths with Jason Eliot Cain, and they soon hit it off. Shortly after, they tied the knot and welcomed their two children, Karson and Kooper, into their lives. However, after almost 30 years of marriage, Karin and Jason decided to part ways in November 2022. By February 23, 2023, she traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend a dental conference, where she met another dentist, James Toliver Craig. According to reports, they were waiting for a shuttle when they started a conversation. At that time, Karin had just reportedly finalized her divorce.
According to her testimony in court, Karin found James to be honest and vulnerable. She testified in court that he told her he was divorced and had children. According to her testimony, while they grew intimate during the trip, she insisted that there were no sexual activities. After coming back from the trip, she and James spoke with one another via email. However, as per court records, he used another address, under the name jimandwaffles, to flirt with her, and some of their exchanges were sexual in nature. On March 8, 2023, Karin traveled from Texas to Colorado, where James lives, and they met at a hotel there. She also had a plan to visit him on March 16, but on that day, he reportedly told her that his wife, Angela Dawn Craig, was sick and in the hospital. During that time, Karin replied by email, expressing her sorrow for him and even saying, “I love you.”
Karin Cain Testified in Court When James Craig Went on Trial
By that time, there was already an ongoing investigation into James since his business partner, Ryan Redfearn, got a tip from one of their employees that the former had reportedly ordered potassium cyanide. Furthermore, he had bought arsenic. It raised red flags since the symptoms Angela experienced were similar to those of poisoning. It was soon revealed that he had also searched on the web on topics like “Is Arsenic Detectable in Autopsy?” and “How many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human?” Angela was sadly taken off life support on March 18, 2023. James was arrested the following day and charged with premeditated first-degree murder. During the investigation, Karin’s emails turned up, which led the detectives to learn that she and James were in a relationship when Angela was in the hospital.

The trial of James began on July 15, 2025, but by then, he was also charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder, two counts of solicitation to commit first-degree perjury, and two counts of solicitation to tamper with physical evidence. During the trial, Karin took the stand and testified in court that she believed he was getting a divorce because James told her so. When the prosecution asked her if she ever noticed any kind of red flags about him, she said, “No. Not even in the days or weeks after. Now I do. But at the time? I missed it all.” It was revealed in court that in one text, James wrote to Karin, “Worst case scenario, what if they decide that I helped her?” indicating that Angela was allegedly suicidal. He was finally convicted on July 30, 2025, on all charges.
James was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murder. Additionally, James was sentenced to 33 years in prison to be served consecutively for all the other charges. In an interview, Karin said she didn’t believe that her short relationship with James motivated him to commit the crime. She continued that it was because they allegedly never spoke about the future. Speaking on the matter, she added, “If I had known what was true, I would not have been with this person.” Expressing her sorrow for Angela’s loved ones, she said, “I can’t even imagine the loss of a family member and then to consider that it could be at the hands of someone that had been in the family for 25 years.”
