Does Kate Die? How does She Survive the Fire? What are the Scars on Her Arms?

Joe Goldberg meets Kate Lockwood in the fourth season of Netflix’s ‘You.’ Things don’t start so well between them as Kate doesn’t like the outsider trying to weasel his way into her friend group. By the end of the season, however, she falls for Joe so hard that she moves to New York to start a new life with him. She thinks that Joe has also done some bad stuff, and she is ready to move past that. However, it takes her about three years to figure out the man she has married. And once that happens, she swears to correct her mistakes, which costs her dearly. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Kate Risks Becoming Another Victim to Expose Joe

The yarn of Joe’s lies comes undone almost immediately for Kate, once she starts looking at him more closely. Three years back, when she had her people look into the man she would marry, she chose not to find out anything about him that he wasn’t ready to tell her. But once she witnesses his taste for murder, she realises that she may have underestimated his dark side. Once she looks down this rabbit hole, she realises her mistake of hiding evidence that led to Nadia’s conviction. When she reaches out to the girl, she discovers that Joe has done all sorts of nasty things and was also the Eat the Rich killer.

Realising what terrible mistakes she has made, Kate decides to change things. First, she gets Nadia out, who then brings Marienne back. The women decide it is not enough for them to get Joe arrested. He will be let out if they cannot provide sufficient proof, and that would be even worse. Eventually, it is decided that Joe has to die, and all three women agree upon it. Once back in New York, they successfully get Joe into his cage, confronting him about his actions. At first, they think about getting a confession from him, which will ensure that he remains in prison for as long as possible. But when it seems that he is too smart for their tricks, they return to the fact that he must be killed.

Kate decides to do the deed to spare Nadia and Marienne further trauma and atone for her complicity in Joe’s actions. By the time she reaches the basement, she discovers that Joe has freed himself as he had a key buried in his arm. A fight ensues between the two, and Kate is shot. This allows Joe to run away, but Maddie shows up for revenge. She sets fire in Mooney’s, not knowing that Kate is also in the basement. When Joe tries to tell her, she refuses to listen, given that he has already told her too many lies.

Kate is Saved by Divine Intervention

Lying bleeding on the floor of Mooney’s basement while the entire bookstore is on fire generally means a character would not survive. However, fate has other plans in mind. While the fire consumes the place, Bronte realises she has forgotten something in the apartment. When she sees the place on fire, she immediately runs inside and finds Kate unconscious. Her first instinct is to save her, but then Joe calls out to her, and Bronte is forced to choose. She can save Kate or leave Joe to die, but that would mean that he will never be held accountable for his actions. So, she decides to rescue Joe. The fact that she chooses to pull him out of the fire shows him that she loves him. However, at the same time, she cannot let Kate die.

The show skips Kate’s rescue, but it could have happened in several ways. When Bronte sees the fire, it is natural that she would have called 911, which is why she would have been confident that she would be saved. If there were a possibility that no one was coming to save her, she probably would have left Joe to die and pulled Kate out of the fire. But she saw an opportunity and took a chance. Meanwhile, 911 would have arrived, put out the fire, and saved Kate from certain death. The fact that she spends a reasonable amount of time inside the burning building is evident from the scars on her arms. However, instead of hiding those scars, she keeps them visible for the world, as she is not ashamed of them. For her, they represent the fight for truth and justice that she fought and won.
