ABC’s ‘Capturing Their Killer: The Girls on the High Bridge’ is a three-part true crime documentary series that chronicles the horrific disappearance and murder of Abigail Williams and Liberty German in February 2017 in Delphi, Indiana. Five years later, the investigation led the authorities to the doorstep of the Allen household as Richard Allen was accused of being involved in the double homicide. In the documentary, the convicted killer’s wife, Kathy Allen, also features and recounts her experience of the entire situation. It is the first time that she publicly spoke about Richard’s prosecution.
Kathy Allen’s Life Was Upended When Murder Allegations Arose Against Her Husband
Kathy Allen led a peaceful and fulfilling life with her longtime husband, Richard “Ricky” M. Allen, in Delphi, Indiana. During the course of their marriage, the couple also welcomed a daughter named Brittany in 1994. Being proud parents, they were looking forward to watching her achieve success in life. However, it all changed on February 13, 2017, when Abigail “Abby” Williams and Liberty “Libby” German were murdered near the Monon High Bridge trail. When the news of their disappearance and killing broke out, Richard told Kathy that he had been around the bridge that afternoon. As per records, he even told the authorities about the same, allegedly to help them out with the investigation.

For the next five years or so, the detectives moved heaven and earth to get to the bottom of the case. That’s when they realized that most of the evidence pointed to Richard, who worked at CVS Pharmacy at the time. Kathy’s life was turned upside down when her husband was accused of killing Abby and Libby. She also went to accompany Richard during one of his police interrogations. As the investigators provided several pieces of evidence against him, Kathy remained firm in her stance and believed her husband to be innocent.
Kathy Allen Has Stood by Richard’s Side As He Pursues an Appeal
While awaiting trial, Kathy kept in touch with Richard, who used to call from jail. After spending several months in solitary confinement, the latter began incriminating himself during his conversations with his wife. According to court records, when he told Kathy that he had committed the double homicide, she refused to believe it and said, “Why would you say that? I know you didn’t. There’s something wrong.” In another instance, he told her, “If I get the electric chair or the death penalty, will you be there for me? I killed Abby and Libby.” In a different call, he asked, “I did it, Kathy. I did it. Do you still love me?” She replied, “Yes, I do. But you didn’t do it.”

In December 2024, Kathy was in court when Richard was found guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of murder while kidnapping the girls. After leaving the courtroom, she was visibly upset and told WTHR, “This isn’t over at all.” She was further devastated when her husband was sentenced to a total of 130 years in prison in connection with the abduction and killing of Abby and Libby. Even today, she firmly believes, “My husband’s not a monster. He’s not the monster that people think he is.”
Kathy added, “I want true justice for Abby and Libby, but it should not be at the expense of an innocent person.” In February 2025, she expressed her hope for the release of her husband and their shared future. She stated, “I’m very hopeful for an appeal. It was definitely our dream to grow old together, and it still is. I’m looking forward to that. I’m not giving up.” Supporting Richard every step of the way, the Delphi, Indiana, resident continues to stand by him as he seeks an extension to file his appeal. Despite his conviction, Kathy firmly believes he was falsely convicted and sentenced.
