Keith and Jennifer Caneiro’s Lives Revolved Around Family and Education
Sherry and Cesar Caneiro welcomed their bundle of joy, Keith Martin Caneiro, on May 14, 1968. He grew up in a loving household in Brooklyn, New York, alongside his brothers, Corey and Paul J. Caneiro. His parents always taught him to be a selfless person who helped people in need. He graduated from John Dewey High School in 1985, before attending Brooklyn College. Keith completed an undergraduate degree at Columbia University in 2014, followed by an Executive Master’s degree in Technology Management in 2018. While in high school, his fondness for computers led him to work as a janitor at a computer store and later as a computer salesman.

Ultimately, Keith and Paul became co-owners of a technology company, Square One Co., with Keith as CEO. The brothers also owned a pest control venture, EcoStar Pest Management, in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Keith found love when he crossed paths with Jennifer Karidis Caneiro in the early 1990s. As their connection blossomed, they finally tied the knot on October 14, 2000, and welcomed their son, Jesse Alexander, on November 10, 2007. On September 16, 2010, their daughter, Sophia Alexis, arrived as a ray of sunshine into their lives. In his free time, Keith loved playing with his pup, Sydney, going to the gym, watching football, and reading books.
On May 14, 1973, Jennifer was welcomed into the world by Bette and Vlassis Karidis. Growing up in Staten Island, New York, she maintained a strong bond with her sister, Bonnie Karidis. Jennifer was known for her bright and empathetic nature, and she loved her annual trips to Aegina, Greece, to visit her Greek family and friends. After completing high school, she earned a degree from the University at Albany in 1996. Furthermore, she was a proud member of the Conover Road School PTO. The Remains of Keith, Jennifer, and Their Kids Were Found After a Fire Broke Out at Their Home
In 2018, 11-year-old Jesse was in 5th grade at Conover Road School, gradually becoming curious about technology and excelling in history. He diligently participated in the Colts Neck Recreation Sports programs and enjoyed playing video games at home. Sophia was in 3rd grade at the same school as Jesse in 2018. Besides that, she participated in the Colts Neck Recreation program and was a member of the Colts Neck Girl Scouts. The enthusiastic young girl also showcased her interest in gymnastics, ice skating, and taking Ninja classes. At home, the 8-year-old made memories with Jennifer as they baked side by side in the kitchen.

Around 12:38 pm on November 20, 2018, firefighters received a call from Keith’s neighbors, reporting a fire at the 50-year-old’s home. When officials and firefighters rushed to the scene, they found Keith dead with multiple gunshot wounds outside the house. After the fire was brought under control, they found Jennifer, Jesse, and Sophia dead inside the residence. Upon inspection, forensics experts recovered several spent 9 mm shell casings at the scene and noted that the remains of the family were badly burnt. The fire department also suspected arson as a potential attempt to destroy evidence.

Court records state that detectives discovered signs of possible tampering with the electrical service box at Keith’s house and observed that the primary generator’s power switch was turned off. The autopsy report determined that Keith’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. Jennifer sustained stab wounds to the torso and a gunshot wound to the head, which led to her demise. While Jesse was stabbed 7 times, Sophia suffered 17 stab wounds. Jesse’s cause of death was determined to be stab wounds of the torso and upper left body, with smoke inhalation as a contributing factor. Sophia died from smoke inhalation and sharp force injuries.
CCTV Footage and an Unexpected Email Helped Officials Crack the Case
On November 20, 2018, firefighters responded to a fire at not just Keith’s home but also at his brother Paul’s house in Ocean Township. Authorities learned that no one was injured in the second fire. According to reports, several of Keith’s neighbors reported hearing gunshots shortly after 3 am. When officials reviewed CCTV footage from Paul’s residence, they found that the cameras stopped recording around 1:30 am, per the records. The surveillance cameras near his home captured a vehicle leaving his house around 2 am and returning approximately two hours later.

Police records specify that authorities believed Paul set his own home on fire to destroy evidence, while his wife and children were inside. Court documents reveal that shortly before the murder, Keith had sent an email to some of his business associates, mentioning that money was missing from two companies he owned with Paul. In the email, the 50-year-old stated that he would stop salary payments to Paul until the missing money was found. The email was reportedly also forwarded to his other brother, Corey.
As per official reports, law enforcement learned that Paul was also set to receive around $1.5 million payout from a life insurance policy if Keith died. When officials checked Paul’s home, they reportedly uncovered a pair of pants with blood on them, which was a match to Sophia’s DNA. He was finally arrested in November 2018 and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated arson. He also faced the charges of theft by unlawful taking, possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose, and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose.

Following Paul’s arrest, he was indicted on the additional charges of hindering his own apprehension, misapplication of entrusted property, and unlawful possession of weapons. His jury trial commenced on January 12, 2026, during which the prosecution presented surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and witnesses before the court. They alleged that Paul intentionally set his home on fire to create the illusion that he was also being targeted. They also claimed that he killed Keith because the 50-year-old discovered that approximately $80,000 was missing from their jointly owned ventures.

On the other hand, the defense contended that investigators ignored alternative suspects. They alleged that Corey also had a potential financial motive and pointed out that no eyewitnesses saw Paul commit the crime. In February 2026, the jury convicted him of four counts of first-degree murder, theft by unlawful taking, two counts of aggravated arson, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose, and two counts of hindering apprehension.
Paul was also found guilty of unlawful possession of weapons and misapplication of entrusted property. Shortly after, his attorneys filed a motion for a new trial on grounds of legal errors. However, no public report has currently provided updates on the motion. On May 19, 2026, Paul was sentenced to four life sentences without the possibility of parole. As of writing, he is serving his sentence at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, New Jersey.
