Directed by Skye Borgman, Netflix’s ‘My Father, the BTK Killer’ is a documentary delving deep into the experiences of Kerri Rowson as she grapples with the reality of her father being a serial killer. Dennis Rader took the lives of 10 innocent individuals, but by all accounts, he was a dedicated, happily married father of two. He thus led a double life until his truth finally came to light in 2005, bringing his reign of terror to a close after three decades. Almost the entire nation breathed a sigh of relief when the news of his arrest came out, but Kevin Bright in particular was arguably the most affected as the heinous criminal’s only known survivor.
Kevin Bright Was Merely 19 When He and His Sister Were Attacked by the BTK Killer
It was reportedly around the mid-1950s that Kevin Bright was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Dorothy Lee Thompson Bright and Charles “Sonny” William Bright as the youngest of their four children. He was seemingly surrounded by affection, care, love, and support as he grew up, resulting in him having a good relationship with both his parents as well as his three siblings: Daryl Keith Bright, Karen Bright Hopper, and Kathryn “Kathy” Doreen Bright. Therefore, it wasn’t unusual for them to just hang out from time to time, so the then-19-year-old was with 21-year-old Kathryn when she returned to her 3217 East 13th Street home on April 4, 1974.

Neither of them had any idea that an armed stranger, wearing a stocking cap and gloves, was waiting for them inside – he had allegedly broken in through the sliding glass door in the back. According to records, he told the siblings he was a wanted man from California, but that all he needed was their car and some food, only to then switch gears by forcing them into a different room. The intruder subsequently, allegedly, made Kevin tie Kathryn up before binding and gagging the older teenager himself. The latter tried to fight back, but to no avail, following which his sister was reportedly dragged away into another room.
As per official records, the stranger quickly returned to Kevin and started strangling him, but he soon managed to free himself, resulting in a struggle that had the former drawing out his weapon. The 19-year-old was reportedly shot in the forehead mere moments later, yet he got back up and continued fighting. What allegedly ensued was the intruder firing two more shots, making Kevin decide in a flash that he would play dead. Reportedly, once the attacker left him alone, he got up, ran outside, and flagged a neighbor, who understood the situation and not only rushed him to the hospital but also called the police.
Since the Traumatic Incident, Kevin Bright Has Chosen to Lead a Quiet Life Away From the Limelight
When Kevin arrived at Wesley Medical Center, he was allegedly wheeled into emergency surgery because, while one bullet had struck his forehead, another had struck right above his mouth. As for the third, it had reportedly simply grazed him, but owing to his other significant wounds, he ultimately needed to have a metal plate inserted into his skull and three of his teeth removed. Hence, he had no idea until much later that by the time officials arrived at the scene, the assailant was nowhere to be found. His sister, though, was found stabbed and strangled – she sadly died at the hospital during her emergency surgery hours later.

According to records, the trauma of that fateful day hung over Kevin like a dark cloud, with it reportedly only growing multifold when he learned their attacker was suspected to be a serial killer. However, the worst aspect for him was arguably having to see the latter gloat about his crimes in detail in letters to the local police as well as the media, which were then plastered across the news. The fact that the assailant referred to himself as “BTK” (in connection with his brutal modus operandi of “bind, torture, kill”) didn’t help either, resulting in his decision to step away from the limelight.
Kevin Bright Continues to Grapple With Grief Owing to Several Deaths in His Family
One of the only times Kevin made a public appearance after 1974 was more than three decades later, when the BTK killer (aka Dennis Rader) faced his day in court. While there was no trial because Dennis pleaded guilty to 10 murders, his sole known survivor and the families of his victims were given a chance to speak via victim impact statements. Since then, from what we can tell, Kevin has chosen to lead a private life away from prying eyes, which has reportedly involved relocating several times. All we know is that now, around the age of 70, Kevin seems to be doing his best to lead a full life while keeping the memories of those he lost alive in his heart.

That’s because, apart from his sister Kathryn, his mother Dorothy Bright, his elder brother Daryl Bright, and his father Charles Bright have also since sadly passed away. While Dorothy died at the age of 62 on January 13, 1992, Daryl lost his battle with leukemia at age 67 on October 8, 2017. As for Charles, he passed away peacefully at his Valley Center, Kansas, home while surrounded by loved ones at the age of 98 on January 5, 2025. Therefore, the only surviving member of Kevin’s immediate family is his elder sister Karen Bright Hopper. Yet it’s imperative to note that over the years, he has built his own family, too. He is happily married to a woman named Sharon, whom he first met while residing in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
