Kevin Boyd Sr Murder: Where Are Lynn and Kevin Boyd Jr Now?

Kevin Eugene Boyd Sr. was a hardworking man and a dutiful father. However, his life came to an abrupt halt in August 1994, when he was found dead in his home in Lake Orion, Michigan. The shocking crime left the community completely shocked and his family members grief-stricken. Investigation Discovery’s ‘Diabolical: Sins of the Mother’ and ‘People Magazine Presents: Crimes of the 90s 1994: Son of Anarchy’ dive deeper into the investigation of the case that revealed a string of shocking betrayal and manipulation. It also features interviews with his loved ones and the officials who ensured justice was served.

Kevin Boyd Sr. Was Found Stabbed and Attacked in His Home in Lake Orion

Kevin Eugene Boyd Sr. was born on September 27, 1951, in Mars Hill, Maine. He grew up in Berkeley, Michigan, surrounded by the love of his parents, Edward C. and Winnifred Linda Boyd. He also had an incredible bond with his six siblings, but he was closest to his sister, Lynette. His loved ones often described him as an outgoing person who was “the life of the party.” In the early 1970s, he met Lynn Louise, and they began dating. They tied the knot in 1975 and welcomed their son, Kevin Jr., into the world sometime in 1977. His world revolved around his family, and he worked hard to provide for them. Kevin Sr. owned a party equipment rental store, Lake Orion Rental, located in Lake Orion in Oakland County, Michigan.

Around Christmas of 1988, Lynn asked Kevin Sr. for a divorce for another woman, which was finalized by 1990. He then moved into an apartment in Lake Orion. Although Lynn had the primary custody of Kevin Jr., they often met so he could spend time with his son. When Kevin Jr. became a teenager, he began working at his father’s store. Kevin Sr. found love once again with Judith Kaminski, AKA Judy. She was also his business partner, and together, they owned Parties-To-Go. However, the life of the 42-year-old turned upside down on August 6, 1994. His employees got worried when Kevin Sr. did not show up for work that morning. Shortly after, Kevin Jr. arrived at the store, and when he found that his father was not there, he went to check his apartment.

When Kevin Jr. entered the apartment, he found Kevin Sr. lying in a pool of blood on the floor. When the authorities were informed and they arrived at the scene, they found Kevin Sr. deceased with a pillow on his head. He was lying near a chair in a position indicating that he was asleep on it when he was attacked. Officials found that he was reportedly stabbed over 20 times and had blunt force trauma to the head, pointing towards two assailants. Although there were no signs of forced entry, the house was ransacked. Kevin Sr.’s guns, rifles, and wallet were also missing. Thus, detectives deduced that the attacker was someone Kevin Sr. already knew. There was blood spatter on the walls and the chair, but they found no murder weapons. The autopsy determined the cause of death to be the stab wounds across his back, face, and stomach, and the blunt force trauma to the head.

Family Ties and Financial Motives Came Into Focus During the Investigation

Officials initially learned that the day Kevin Sr. was killed, his girlfriend, Judy, had left the town. When she returned the following day, she was questioned. Judy informed them that she and Kevin Sr. had a few insurance policies. According to those, if something happened to one of them, the other person would receive the money to continue the business. She reportedly told them that Kevin Jr. would also become the owner of Lake Orion Rental and a part-owner beside her for Parties-To-Go in his father’s absence. Since she passed a polygraph test, she was ruled out as a suspect. When Kevin Jr. was interrogated, he admitted that he and his father had a tumultuous relationship, and he often had to move from school to school because he had problems with discipline.

Kevin Jr. claimed that on August 6, 1994, he fought with Kevin Sr. So, he drove to his girlfriend, Andrea Linton’s home, where he stayed the night. Since Andrea confirmed his alibi, he was not considered a prime suspect. Investigators then questioned Lynn, who alleged that she was at home with her girlfriend, Julie Grain, on the night of the murder. Julie reportedly confirmed her alibi. Lynn claimed that she maintained a cordial relationship with Kevin Sr. She alleged that she suspected Donald Lucarelli, one of Kevin Sr.’s employees, who allegedly had mafia ties. However, he was ruled out as a suspect after he passed a polygraph examination. Donald informed the police that, since Kevin Jr. wasn’t an adult yet, in case of his father’s death, the assets would be managed by Lynn. Furthermore, he suspected her because her alimony payments were also about to end.

Multiple Shocking Confessions Led to the Arrest of the Killers

A band musician from a local establishment contacted investigators shortly after discovering Kevin Sr.’s wallet in the back of his pickup truck. Within weeks, Donald called officials to inform them that Lynn now had access to a safe at the rental store. However, he emphasized that the safe combination was written on a paper always kept in Kevin Sr.’s wallet, and he never shared it. Since the paper was missing from the wallet, it raised suspicions. Everything changed by November 1994, when Julie came forward and confessed that she had given a false alibi for Lynn. She informed them that on August 6, Lynn wasn’t home from around 11 pm to 4 am. Initially, Lynn refused to speak to the authorities, but on December 18, 1994, she called the detectives and turned herself in. She claimed that Julie also committed the crime with her.

Lynn confessed she hit Kevin Sr. with a baseball bat, and Julie allegedly had the knife. She admitted that after the murder, she took Kevin Sr.’s firearms and put them in a duffel bag before discarding them. Investigators learned from Andrea that she gave a false alibi. She informed them that Kevin Jr. met Lynn late at night on August 6. When he was interrogated, he confessed to killing his father and admitted that Lynn initiated the act. He confessed that he was the one holding the knife and helped her enter the apartment since he had the keys. He led officials to the baseball bat, and an auctioneer discovered the knife in Kevin Sr.’s rental business. Lynn and Kevin Jr. were arrested on December 18, 1994, and were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

While Lynn Boyd is Serving Her Time in Prison Today, Kevin Jr. is Out on Parole

There were two separate jury trials for Lynn and Kevin Jr. in 1996. Although Kevin Jr. was 16 years old during the time of the murder, he was tried as an adult. During Lynn’s trial, the prosecution presented the witness testimonies, confession, and evidence against Lynn before the court. However, the defense claimed she took the blame for her son to protect him. Ultimately, she was convicted of premeditated first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on February 26, 1996. During the trial of Kevin Jr., the prosecution presented the available evidence, testimonies, and his confession. On the other hand, the defense claimed that his confession was involuntary. Kevin Jr. was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Following his conviction, Kevin Jr. appealed the judgment several times, raising issues like ineffective assistance of counsel, failure to investigate certain witnesses or evidence, and the fact that he should’ve been sentenced as a minor. In 2012, the Supreme Court ruled in one case that mandatory life sentences for juvenile offenders were unconstitutional. Following that, Kevin Jr.’s sentence was vacated, and he was resentenced on May 15, 2019, to serve a term of 25 years to 60 years in prison with the possibility of parole. He was released on parole on January 7, 2020, and is living a quiet life today. Lynn is currently incarcerated at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
