The central conflict in Netflix’s ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ is Jackie Howard’s feelings for the Walter brothers, Cole and Alex. Interestingly, the second season leans further into the plot device of a love triangle with another Walter brother, Nathan, being at the centre of it with his boyfriend, Skylar, and a new love interest, Zach. While their equation ends in a disaster, the sophomore season also subtly lays the ground for another love triangle, which will unfold in the third season. Once again, Alex will be at the centre of it, but the other two players in the game will have changed, raising different stakes for him. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Dylan and Kiley Develop an Unlikely Friendship
The second season of ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ opens the door for unexpected relationships, and Kiley and Dylan 3 are at the top of that list. They had minimal to no interaction in the previous season, which made sense because they come from different worlds. Dylan is a popular jock, becoming the next football star of Silver Falls High since Cole’s departure from the team, while she is more of a nerdy person who doesn’t chase after popularity and prefers to keep to herself. Kiley’s best friend is Alex, with whom she has a lot in common, and in the first season, it becomes clear that her feelings for Alex might be more than just friendship. But then he falls for Jackie, and Kiley is relegated to the background.
This trend continues as Alex returns to a newfound popularity, and he sidelines his best friend for a long time. Meanwhile, Dylan takes an interest in Kiley, mainly because she is so different from him. Despite his popularity, he finds himself suffocated by his father’s expectations and is on the brink of a spiral that may end his football career once and for all. In all of this, Kiley is the only person that he feels he can turn to for friendship, advice, and a reality check. By the end of the season, he clearly starts to value her insights deeply and shows that he is ready to change for her and become a better person, someone she deserves.
He also professes his desire to be her boyfriend, and she accepts. At the local fair, they share a kiss, and since they do it in front of the whole town, their relationship is not a secret from anyone. While it might seem that they are at the beginning of their happily ever after, there is a lot about herself that Kiley keeps a secret from Dylan. More importantly, the secrets that she keeps from her boyfriend are known to Alex, which is why her equation with him will pose some major challenges to their romance in the upcoming season.
Alex’s Feelings for Kiley Might Surface in the Third Season
As is often the case, people go around looking for things while ignoring the ones that are right in front of them. Alex Walter may have realised this too late, or so the look in his eyes says when he watches Kiley and Dylan kissing each other at the town fair. Alex and Kiley had been inseparable since childhood, mainly because they were kindred spirits untouched by school popularity. But then, Jackie came along, and it seemed that Alex forgot all about Kiley. He seems to do the same in the second season, even when he and Jackie are broken up, and this time, Kiley decides not to entertain him anymore. This leads to her friendship with Dylan, which opens a whole new chapter in her life.
Still, when the time comes, Alex is the one she calls. She doesn’t talk about her grandmother or parents anymore, and for now, Alex seems to be the only one who knows about her family situation. This is not bound to change in the future, and considering her grandma’s deteriorating situation, it is clear that Kiley will turn to Alex in times of need, which might not sit well with her new boyfriend. More importantly, following the finale of Season 3, Alex knows that Jackie has been toying with his feelings while harboring a deeper love for Cole.
The thread of his patience with her will finally run out, which will make him feel for Kiley even more. The duo already shared a tender moment in Season 2 when he rushed to her house to help her with her grandma. If another such moment comes, there is a good chance that something might happen between the two of them. This means that Alex will be jumping into another love triangle, which won’t be any less complicated than the one with Jackie and Cole. The only difference is that this time, his best friendship will be on the line.
