After former Marine and entrepreneur Kirby McCord Carpenter was found dead in late 2022, what followed was an extensive investigation that unraveled a complex web of deception. It turned out that the self-made millionaire from Mississippi was heinously killed at the hands of someone he considered family, and two others were involved as accomplices/accessories. The details of it all have since been chronicled on NBC’s ‘Dateline: The Betrayal of Kirby Carpenter,’ underscoring precisely what transpired and how the case ultimately came to a close.
Kirby Carpenter Efficiently Juggled Being an Entrepreneur and a Family Man
Born on May 23, 1986, in the small city of Tupelo in Lee County, Mississippi, Kirby McCord Carpenter grew up in a household of comfort, love, and support, thanks to his family of 8. He had a devoted mother in Mattie Jane Michael Jones, a kind father named Jerry Carpenter, two sisters called Wendy and Kaysie, as well as three brothers in Shannon, Rocky, and Robbie. They were such a tight-knit unit that it pushed him to always be the best version of himself, so that’s the mindset with which he graduated from Kossuth High School in the mid-2000s.

Kirby subsequently enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he actively served for a few years before returning to his home state and establishing himself as a successful businessman. According to records, he’d not only launched, operated, and sold 2 companies but also accumulated several rental properties for passive income by the time the 2020s rolled around. He then decided to spread his wings as the owner of Mississippi Gold, Silver, and Coin Exchange in Ripley, Tippah County, enabling him to soon become a self-made millionaire. On a personal level, his familial bonds persisted even as the years passed – his parents separated before finding love again, and his siblings settled down, but their closeness never wavered.
Kirby also expanded his inner circle when he fell in love with a woman named Whitney Evans, with whom he happily welcomed an adorable son into this world – Townes Plainview Carpenter. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t pan out the way they’d hoped, yet they remained amicable for their little one even after he moved on and got involved with Caitlin Spence. He first encountered the latter at a local tractor supply store in early 2020, just for both of them to feel such a spark that one conversation led to another and another and then another. Their romance was such a whirlwind that they moved in together by August of the same year, roughly 2 years before welcoming Enola Dean Carpenter into their lives in July 2022.
Kirby Carpenter Was Fatally Shot On His Own Property
Everything seemed perfectly ordinary on the evening of November 30, 2022, when Kirby texted his girlfriend to tell her he had left work and was making his way back to their little family. As per records, he did stop at a Kroger store to buy groceries, but he made it to the home they shared in rural Dry Creek, just outside Booneville, Mississippi, between 6:45 pm and 7 pm. However, Caitlin reportedly didn’t see him anywhere when she returned later that evening, yet she didn’t think much of it, took care of her responsibilities, and went to bed. She reportedly grew seriously worried about his whereabouts the next day, though, so she apparently even contacted his mother because she was starting to suspect that he was missing.

It was the following afternoon, on December 2, that Caitlin found Kirby dead near a shed on their property, which was out of view of any of the main entrances to their home. She immediately contacted the police, who arrived at the scene within minutes and discovered the 36-year-old covered by a tarp with a toolbox sitting right on top of it. As they secured the area roughly 30 feet from the carport where his vehicle was parked with the Kroger bags still inside, they also noticed mud caked on his clothes/knees. His autopsy later confirmed his cause of death to be a single gunshot straight to the chest, with additional small wounds suggesting he was dragged to the spot after being killed.
Kirby Carpenter’s Murder Was Riddled With Speculations of Financial Greed
The moment officials began looking into Kirby’s homicide, they hypothesized greed could be a possible motive since it was no secret he was successful and often carried a lot of cash. They thus wondered whether the matter was a robbery gone wrong, only to find no evidence to that effect; instead, they learned details that pointed fingers at someone much closer to home. Not only did they deem it strange that Caitlin didn’t worry about her boyfriend after he’d texted that he was coming home, but they also found some inconsistencies in her statements. She reportedly told a friend she hadn’t seen him at all on November 30, yet told detectives he was still asleep when she left for work early that fateful morning. She further claimed she didn’t want to disturb him as the entire house had recently been sick with the flu.

As if that’s not enough, surveillance footage from a Walmart in Booneville captured Caitlin and her newborn shopping at around 7:15 pm before they just sat in her car for 45 minutes. According to records, she texted Kirby a few times during this period – telling him about a “crazy dog lady” and asking him if he wanted Chinese for dinner – but she received no response. Then came the revelation that it seemed as if the assailant had access to the Dry Creek house since the security cameras were tampered with, yet all of his keys were near his remains. The authorities’ suspicions grew stronger as they realized she had hired lawyers, left the home she shared with the victim, and moved to Virginia to be with her family within a month.
It subsequently also came to light that Kirby’s estate – managed by his family – was paying Caitlin some child support, but she allegedly stopped communicating with them after a while. The welfare check they requested to see if everything was okay also yielded more questions than answers, as they learned that the Spence family had moved to Pine Grove Township, Pennsylvania. According to records, Caitlin’s parents, Jeffrey and Karen Spence, had paid for their home there in cash, leading many to speculate that the family was responsible, as they were after his wealth. After all, they had come to live with Caitlin and Kirby after Enola’s birth, reportedly only leaving on the evening of November 29, 2022 – so the timing of the entire ordeal seemed off.
Jeffrey, Caitlin, and Karen Spence Were Arrested a Year After Kirby’s Murder
Although there initially seemed to be no evidence to back any accusation, conjecture, or speculation, things changed in November 2023 as an anonymous caller came forward to the police. They claimed that Caitlin had confessed to them, telling them in no uncertain terms that it was her father who shot and killed her boyfriend on that fateful November 30, 2022, evening. This call allowed detectives to secure a warrant for the family/household, leading to the arrest of Caitlin in Pennsylvania and both her parents – Jeffrey as well as Karen – in Virginia. It was exactly a year after Kirby’s murder that the three of them were taken into custody, and a search of their home yielded not only a shotgun but also some cash hidden/wrapped in tinfoil.

Caitlin, Jeffrey, and Karen were charged with one count of capital murder, two counts of grand larceny, and two counts of conspiracy, following which the young mother waived her extradition rights. The state subsequently came to believe that her parents had indeed left the home she shared with Kirby on November 29, 2022, to make the 8-hour drive to their place in Saltville, Virginia. However, they also believed that after reaching there at midnight, Jeffrey drove all the way back to Dry Creek, laid in wait, killed Kirby, stole cash as well as valuables, and then drove back home.
Jeffrey, Caitlin, and Karen Spence Have All Been Convicted in Kirby Carpenter’s Case
In the end, on April 17, 2025, Caitlin pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact in exchange for a 20-year suspended sentence, 5 years of supervised release, and testifying against her parents in court. Then, just 3 days before her trial was to begin in September 2025, Karen entered into an Alford plea deal to one count of accessory after the fact of grand larceny. In exchange for her agreement, she was given a 10-year suspended prison sentence and ordered to serve 5 years on unsupervised probation.

On the flip side, Jeffrey decided to proceed with the trial, during which his daughter became the star witness for the prosecutors by testifying that he confessed to the crime. Caitlin claimed her boyfriend was an abusive drug dealer – an unsubstantiated accusation – before adding that her father did admit to the murder after she found his remains. She told jurors that he was “aggressive” and “short” with her after Kirby’s death, telling her to drop any ideas she may have to try to bring him justice. Unfortunately, the jury deadlocked at 6 votes for acquittal and 6 votes for conviction, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.
When Jeffrey stood trial again in March 2026, another witness testified that he had offered them $5,000 to kill the victim owing to the alleged mistreatment of his daughter. Thus, with this and Caitlin’s unchanging statements on the stand, he was convicted of first-degree murder on March 27. Therefore, today, while Caitlin and Karen are serving their probation in Mississippi with limited freedom, legal stipulations, as well as GPS monitoring, 68-year-old Jeffrey is serving his life sentence without the possibility of parole at the mixed-security South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) in Leakesville.
