If there is one thing that Gordon Ramsay does best on Fox’s ‘Kitchen Nightmare,’ it is saving restaurants from the verge of disaster and providing the viewers with the best seat to the astonishing relaunches and drama. In episode 6 of season 9, titled ‘Kings Blue Jam,’ the renowned chef sets foot in Spring, Texas, to visit the once-thriving Southern breakfast joint. Now filled with financial struggles, family drama, and food so bad that it sometimes ends up making their customers sick, it brings the same chaos and emotions out at every moment.
Kings Blu Jam Cafe Was Bustling With Customers Until the Competitors Arrived
In 2018, the owner, Connie King Sumrall, opened Kings Blu Jan Cafe in the hope of bringing a little piece of Louisiana to Spring, Texas. Initially, the cafe was always filled with customers, and there was only one other breakfast joint in the area. However, things soon started to slow down when more competition emerged. Her daughter, Justin, also joined in to help her run the business, but the mother-daughter relationship gradually became sour. With the competition rising and strained connections on the premises, things slowly started going downhill.
Justin, who initially started out as a server, became a manager known for her bluntness and for often giving orders without any filter. While she claims that her mother refuses to listen, Head Chef Aaron is quite frustrated with her attitude. The organization in the kitchen is also lacking, as he does not appreciate Justin running the kitchen and ordering him around. The situation becomes so tiring for him that he expresses that he would be satisfied if he could just mute her voice. While Connie has invested everything into the restaurant, her daughter is the one calling the shots in the kitchen.
Additionally, the server, Macie, points out that Justin’s mood swings have made it impossible for her to connect with her. The tension between her and her mother doesn’t only affect the staff but also pushes the customers away. For Justin, Connie is the matriarch as well as her boss. Although she never tries to be mean to her, she ends up getting frustrated because her mother does not tend to listen to her advice. According to her, Connie has great ideas, but she does not know how to execute them. With the business running bad and the risk of losing their house, the owner is out of her wits as to what she can do to salvage the situation.
Gordon Ramsay Reveals More Than One Problem in Kings Blu Jam
As Gordon Ramsay arrives at the cafe for the first time, he knocks at the window. He first thinks that it is a drive-through, only to realize that it is not operational. Upon stepping inside, he notes that the dining area is lifeless. There are flies swarming around, and the atmosphere is anything but welcoming for the customers. Without investing any time, he asks Macie for recommendations and orders the usual round of dishes. As he receives the first plate of Shrimp and Grits, he instantly remarks that it seems someone has puked in his bowl. While the Egg benedict turns out to be hard-boiled instead of runny, he considers the chicken as dry as the Sahara desert. According to Connie, she refuses to believe that the chicken is dry and mentions that Gordon just does not know what the Southern food tastes like.
After asking Connie, Gordon shockingly discovers that the restaurant is currently $600,000 in debt. Breaking down in tears, she further discloses that they would have to close the door if the situation does not turn around for them. As if things could not get worse, a customer in the restaurant becomes very ill after eating the Shrimp and Grits. Once the restaurant becomes empty and the staff gets free, he immediately calls the team for a meeting and announces that the place is quite improper. He points out that the food is inconsistent, the drive-through is dysfunctional, and customers are getting sick. He is surprised more when Justin informs of her mother’s meddling in the kitchen.
Upon talking with Justin, Justin’s veil of anger towards her mother is finally lifted. It turns out her dream was to pursue a degree in Nursing. However, she could not continue since she started working full-time at the cafe. Gordon asks her not to surrender yet when he understands that she wants to make the business bigger. When the place opens for lunch, complaints from customers start pouring in. As Gordon spends time in the kitchen, he realizes that it is very disorganized. Upon checking the place further, he finds bacon grease lying in a vessel and an egg in the vent. Further inspections lead to him finding rotten produce, moldy strawberries, and even cockroaches. Immediately, he goes out to the customers and apologizes on behalf of the owner, sending them home. He exclaims that it is a pure health hazard and bluntly points out that the owner is clearly out of her depth.
Connie and Justin Finally Realize That They Need to Work as a Team
Upon talking with Connie and Justin, Gordon suggests that they work out their relationship. While he emphasizes to the owner that she is losing her daughter besides the cafe, he asks the manager to give her mother a chance. According to him, Connie needs to step out of her denial, and they need to support each other before it is too late. However, as soon as he leaves, the mother tries to extend her love, but her daughter is reluctant to make it up. As everyone leaves for the night, Gordon’s design team gets to work and completely transforms the cafe. The dark and cluttered space is completely renovated with a light color palette. The out-of-order drive-through has finally become functional, and the kitchen has been thoroughly cleaned. It is also reorganized, and the equipment in the kitchen is all updated.
Each staff member loves the changes, and Connie becomes very emotional about them. Gordon Ramsay also simplifies the menu and reduces it to 25 items that one can easily prepare within three minutes or less. With the new dishes being fresh, flavourful, and true to their Southern roots, the taste of the food leaves everyone in awe. Since the restaurant is looking the part, it is now time for the relaunch. Connie focuses on the front of the house and the drive-through while Justin manages the kitchen. As the day begins, things look promising, and the restaurant is packed with customers complimenting the changes. However, when the orders start arriving, the cracks soon start to form. Justin struggles to communicate with Aaron, which leads to very slow service and mistakes in the kitchen.
Gordon continuously encourages her to step up and coach her team instead of just giving them orders, but the tensions reach a boiling point. Being overwhelmed, she walks out mid-service and declares that Aaron is not putting in any effort or communicating properly. Gordon chases after her, calling out her on her immaturity, reminding her about her worth. He goes back inside and informs his mother about the situation. Connie soon runs outside after her daughter and pleads for her to return since she needs her. This ultimately does the trick as Justin finally feels that the owner calling her back to the cafe is not just her being the boss but also her mother. As Justin returns to her post, Gordon explains to her that it is not going to be easy, especially in the very beginning.
Although there will be bumps in the road, and everything will not be perfect, they will have to handle it. With the relaunch ending magnificently, the Kings Blu Jam Cafe has ended up serving quality food to its customers and has completely won them over. The team is quite excited to get good reviews from them, and it has been a pleasure to hear that they will come back. With the restaurant finally back on track, Gordon Ramsay tells Connie it is time for him to say goodbye. With gratefulness in her heart, she has continued relentlessly working on her business. In their updates after two months, Connie managed to stick to her roles and operate the drive-through. The pure organized working had led to a steady growth in their sales.
Kings Blu Jam Cafe Has Seemingly Shut its Doors Permanently
From what we can tell, it seems that the Kings Blu Jam cafe faced some bumps along the road and is permanently closed as of writing. According to the account of one of the customers who visited the eatery in February 2025, the Southern-style family cafe had been sold to new owners. It has also been claimed that although they kept the old sign-up and have not changed the Google listing yet, they now serve a completely new menu. Another customer claimed that it is currently Country Scrambled Cafe, which already has other outlets in that particular area of Houston, and that the new owners will soon remove and replace the old sign with the new one. Having said that, it is imperative to mention that the owners of Kings Blu Jam have yet to confirm the same.
