Kohrra Season 2 Recap

The second season of ‘Kohrra’ takes the time jump of a few months, with Amarpal Garundi now transferred to a town called Dalerpura. His new boss is Dhanwant Kaur, who is going through a tough time personally, but does not let that impact her work. Or at least, she tries. They are called in when an old woman finds the dead body of her daughter, Preet, in the cowshed next to their house. The marks on the neck show that the victim was strangled, but it’s not confirmed whether she died of strangulation or if it was the spike she was impaled on. As the investigation progresses, several suspects come into the picture.

The first suspect is a man named Johnny Malang, with whom Preet used to make dance videos for social media. The house’s caretaker, who left a mere hour before the murder, reveals that Johnny had come by the house and had an altercation with Preet. The other suspect is Preet’s husband, whom she separated from after discovering that he was cheating on her. It turns out that Preet had taken out a hefty sum from his account, prompting him to send her a threatening voice note. Another suspect is Preet’s brother, Baljinder, who has an affair of his own, which is a cause for conflict within his marriage. When Preet threatened to claim her share of the inheritance, Baljinder’s financials were threatened.

What Happened to Arun’s Father? Who is Rakesh Kumar?

While Garundi and Dhanwant chase after the killer, the story creates space for a seemingly unrelated character named Arun. He has come from Jharkhand and is looking for his father, who went missing twenty years ago. The only thing Arun knows is that he came to Dalerpura for a job, but was never heard from again. All he has is a letter and a photograph, but both are two decades old, and when he files a missing person’s complaint, the officers make it clear that there is little to no chance that his father will be found. Arun gets a job to provide for himself and continues his search, asking around for any leads that could help him. It isn’t until Baljinder’s barn catches on fire that Arun finally ends up on the right path.

It turns out that twenty years ago, when Arun’s father, Rakesh Kumar, came to Dalerpura, he and four other men were taken to Baljinder’s house for work. At the time, Baljinder’s father was the one in charge, and he basically bought the men, including Rakesh, as bonded laborers. This meant that the five men would work for him, and in return, they would be fed and have a roof over their head, but they wouldn’t be paid money and would have to trade in their freedom. Basically, they would be slaves of the family. Of the five men, Rakesh was the only one who was taken inside the house. So, while the other four were kept in the barn outside the house, Rakesh was kept in the cowshed inside the gates.

At the time, the men had no idea what they were getting into, but poverty presented them with no other option. Once they were bonded, they couldn’t go back to their families, which is how Rakesh lost contact with his wife and son in Jharkhand. For years, the men worked for Baljinder’s family, but being chained up like an animal took a toll on their mental health. When the other four men were caught in the accidental fire, Arun had a feeling that his father might have been one of them. When one of the survivors spoke Rakesh’s name, Arun became convinced that his father was one of the deceased, which prompted him to murder the man who sold his father in the name of giving him a job to support his family.

Who Killed Preet?

While Arun thought his father was dead, he didn’t know that Rakesh wasn’t tied up in the barn that burned down. In fact, Rakesh had been let go a few weeks ago. When Preet returned from the US a few months back, she was horrified to discover that Rakesh was still there, and worse, he was not in a good place mentally. She pleaded with her brother to let him go back home, and this eventually made Baljinder take the chains off him and give him his freedom. The problem, however, is that for someone who has been in chains for twenty years, it is not easy to get out of them in one night. Rakesh’s mind was already messed up beyond repair at this point, and despite having his freedom, he didn’t know what it actually meant.

So, walking around town in a daze, Rakesh would find his way back to the house and the cowshed, where he would chain himself again, because that was the only thing that his mind remembered. The night that Preet fought with Johnny Malang, and the caretaker, Kanni, left town to attend a wedding, Rakesh came back. When Preet saw him, she was surprised, because she thought he would have gone back home. When she discovered that he had chained himself back up in the barn, she freed him and tried to tell him that he could go back home now. Her words sparked something inside Rakesh, who became violent. He caught her throat and tried to strangle her. In the tussle, when he let go of her, she was thrown back and accidentally fell on the spike behind her.

Because Rakesh had no way to know what happened, and what he had done, he simply left, while Preet was left behind and wasn’t found until the next morning with none the wiser about what really happened to her. The truth comes to light when Rakesh comes to the police station after an altercation outside the school, where the guard misinterprets his interaction with a boy as his attempt to kidnap the child. By that time, Rakesh had been to the station a couple of times, so no one batted an eye when he returned. But then, Garundi takes a look at the photo Arun brought of his parents, and he realises who Rakesh really is. To confirm his identity, Rakesh is brought in front of Baljinder.

His reaction shows that, despite not being in the right state of mind, he still remembers the man responsible for his condition. This leads Dhanwant to realise that Rakesh may have remembered the way to Baljinder’s house and been there the night of the murder. To test this, they take Rakesh back to the house, and not surprisingly, he goes back to the cowshed and puts himself back in the chains. When Preet’s mother discovers that he is the one who killed her, she curses him, pointing out that Preet was the one who fought for his freedom. However, Dhanwant and Garundi make it clear that it was Preet’s mother, her husband, and Baljinder who put Rakesh and the other four men through this hell, and they are the ones truly responsible for Preet’s tragic fate.

Do Garundi and Silky Get Back Together?

One of the major changes in ‘Kohrra’ Season 2 is the shift of the location to a town called Dalerpura. It turns out that Garundi wanted to get away from his brother and sister-in-law, following the complicated dynamics between them. At the end of Season 1, he gets married to Silky and immediately applies for a transfer, which gets approved while they are on their honeymoon. While Silky questions the move away from family, Garundi sees this as a chance to start anew, away from all the toxicity that had plagued him for so long. And, for a while, it works. However, he forgets that he is still carrying his secrets with him, and that’s what unravels things between him and Silky.

On their honeymoon, she tells him about her past affair and an aborted pregnancy. With her confession, she asks if there is something he wants to reveal to her. At the time, he doesn’t. But eventually, Silky finds out about the true nature of the relationship between him and his sister-in-law, Rajji, including the fact that Garundi is the father of Rajji’s unborn child. This revelation shakes her so much that she packs her bags and leaves him. He tries to reach out to her, but she refuses to see him, pointing out that she had given him a chance to come clean to her, but he didn’t. Eventually, Rajji comes to see her. She confesses her role in the whole thing, but also reveals that Garundi loves Silky and left his home and his inheritance to be with her.

Rajji asks Silky to give him a chance, and at the time, Silky doesn’t seem so convinced. In the end, however, when Garundi and his brother, Jung, are at the hospital, where Rajji has given birth, Silky sits next to Garundi, who is sleeping. This shows that she is ready to give him another chance, though there is a long way before she can completely forgive him. Her presence next to him brings hope that things will be alright between them, eventually. It will be hard for Silky to forget that he already has a child, but perhaps she will appreciate the distance now and focus on the future.

Why does Dhanwant Sell the Bike? Does Jagdish Come Back Home?

While Garundi’s situation is familiar to the audience, Dhanwant’s story and the true extent of her struggles come to light over the course of the season. It turns out that she lost her teenage son in an accident for which she holds her husband, Jagdish, responsible. He was the one driving drunk that night, with their son behind him on the bike. Around the same time, Dhanwant was suspended when she failed to submit the documents in a case that fell apart in court. Her husband lost himself in alcohol, and while she tried for another child with IVF, Jagdish never made an effort to go along with her plan. At one point, he tries to sell the bike because he cannot bear the thought of seeing it again.

However, Dhanwant stops him, saying that it is a remembrance of their son. In her grief, she fails to see that Jagdish is drowning in guilt. Every night she has to drag him out of one bar or another, but there comes a day when he goes missing. She looks for him all over town, but there is no sign of him, which is when she starts to wonder if he’s gone for good. A few days later, she gets a call from one of his friends, who reveals that Jagdish called him to send a message to Dhanwant that he is fine, but he doesn’t want to talk to anyone for a while. It turns out that Jagdish has checked himself into a rehab. To confirm that he’s there, Dhanwant visits him, but, honoring his desire not to meet with anyone, she decides to watch him from a distance.

She finds him talking about their son and how guilty he feels for what happened to him. At the same time, he also talks about how he lost his wife that day and had been drinking himself senseless in the hopes that she would try to make him stop drinking like she used to back when things were still good between them. This makes Dhanwant emotional, and she returns home, relieved that Jagdish has finally taken a step to be better. Later, we see her selling her son’s bike, which shows that she, too, has started to let go and heal. The next scene shows Jagdish placing a call. It is not confirmed whether he actually talks to Dhanwant, but it shows that the couple is getting there. Rehab might not completely fix Jagdish and the issues between him and his wife, but it does give him a place to start, to make amends and heal, and maybe even think about the future.
