Leviathan Season 2: What to Expect if it is Renewed?

Netflix’s ‘Leviathan’ is a steampunk anime thriller series set in an alternate history of World War I. The narrative follows Austro-Hungarian Prince Aleksander von Hohenberg and Deryn Sharp, a Scottish airman disguised as Daryl Sharp, as they attempt to prevent the outbreak of the First World War. These two individuals from opposing factions, namely the Clankers and the Darwinists, embark on a global adventure aboard the massive airbeast Leviathan, finding themselves increasingly drawn to each other. The anime series, produced by Qubic Pictures and Studio Orange, is based on the eponymous novel trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.. The first season ended with Aleksander and Deryn stopping the plans of Nikola Tesla and avoiding a major conflict with the Clankers, headed by Germany.

The two lead characters kiss goodbye to each other and go their separate ways to pursue their destinies, although promising to meet each other soon. Though the character arcs of Aleksander and Deryn concluded in the first season, several branches of the storyline still have the potential to be explored. Though Season 2 hasn’t been announced by Netflix, it is likely that the streaming giant will renew the anime series, as the world after World War I offers an interesting premise.. Even with a swift renewal, the complete production cycle for the series would likely span one to two years. Therefore, ‘Leviathan’ Season 2 could potentially premiere on Netflix in early 2027.

Leviathan Season 2 Could Explore a Threat Like the Goliath Again

Leviathan has several plot elements that haven’t been fully resolved yet. The series concludes with Nora Barlow inviting Deryn Sharp to join her in Antarctica to investigate unusual weather patterns. They are expected to travel to the continent aboard the Leviathan to study this phenomenon comprehensively. Nikola Tesla’s weapon, the Goliath, is known to produce random and unnatural weather occurrences, hinting at the possibility that the genius inventor either targeted Antarctica unbeknownst to the world or may have built another dangerous weapon similar to the Goliath in the polar region. If this becomes a reality, Nora and Deryn will need to fight with all the resources at their disposal to prevent the world from becoming a warzone again.

Another season could explore the scenarios that might arise when the world’s major powers learn of such a weapon. Since the first season concludes the storyline from Scott Westerfeld’s novel trilogy, the show will have to develop a premise that’s original. It is interesting to note that World War II began two decades after the end of World War I, so a potential second season could also navigate the technological advances in the inter-war period and how they threaten the world, which has possibly become even more complex from a geopolitical standpoint.

Leviathan Season 2 Could Explore The Future of Aleksander and Deryn’s Relationship

In Season 1, Aleksander and Deryn bid each other goodbye after handling the threat posed by the German U-Boat and Nikola Tesla. They grow a deeply complex bond over the course of the season, learning about each other’s true identities and morals. The love story plays a subtle yet important role in the narrative. It is highly probable that Deryn and Aleksander will cross paths again, continuing their love story. Aleksander is expected to be a successful leader of Austria, while Deryn will likely excel as an airman, aiding Nora Barlow in scientific advancements. Their strong bond suggests their paths are destined to intertwine once more.

Despite his best intentions, Aleksander’s new position as the Archduke of Austria may necessitate marriage alliances with other royal families of Europe, potentially dragging him away from Deryn. As an ambitious woman in a male-dominated society, Deryn would also have her own reasons for not reuniting with Aleksander. Her life as an airman of Great Britain could complicate the prospect of marriage or a relationship with the leader of a foreign nation. Furthermore, if a world-ending scenario arises again, the two unlikely lovers will need to seek each other out to solve another crisis to save humanity once more. If there is a time jump in a potential second season, it could place the lead characters at a later stage in their life, maybe a period before World War II, and see how their emotional dynamics have changed over the years.
