Is Lexy Catherine? Is She the Killer in His & Hers?

In Netflix’s ‘His & Hers,’ a string of murders in Dahlonega, Georgia, digs up long-buried secrets of its people. The show begins with the investigation into the murder of a woman named Rachel, and things immediately become complicated when it turns out that the lead investigator, Jack Harper, had a connection to the victim. While he tries to keep it hidden, his estranged wife, Anna, returns to town with the intention of reviving her career by reporting on the murder. Soon, Anna’s connection to Rachel also surfaces, which brings up the name of a girl called Catherine, who turns out to be connected to Anna’s nemesis and fellow reporter, Lexy Jones. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Catherine’s Makeover Gave Birth to Lexy Jones

When they were young, Anna and Rachel used to be friends. Their group also included Helen and Jack’s sister, Zoe. Before Anna’s arrival, the other three had been a tight-knit group of mean girls who enjoyed bullying others. One of the subjects of their repeated pranks was Catherine. The trio made fun of her because of her weight and because she didn’t look or act like them. What made things worse for Catherine was that her own sister, Andrea, also used to make fun of her appearance. All this bullying affected her self-confidence, and she was stuck in a spiral. And then, on Anna’s 16th birthday, she was invited to a party in the woods.

Neither Anna nor Catherine knew that Rachel used to bring unsuspecting girls like them into the woods, get them drunk, and then let boys sexually assault them for money. When Catherine is attacked, Anna is the only one who comes to her help, while Rachel, Helen, and Zoe do nothing but watch. Even though Anna saves Catherine, getting assaulted herself in the process, the latter doesn’t feel any ounce of gratitude towards her. She believes that Anna had been in on the plan all along, and her empathy was for show. Before Anna, Catherine had stayed out of Rachel and her mean girls’ group’s way. But then Anna invited her to sit with them for lunch, and Rachel made her drink a Coke laced with her pee.

The humiliation of the drink was explained away when Rachel claimed there wasn’t actually pee in it. But Catherine couldn’t forget almost being raped. It’s not clear whether it was the trauma of this event or the death of her sister that made her decide to completely change herself. After school ended, she cut off from everyone she knew. She lost weight and reinvented her personality such that no one could identify her as the same girl from school anymore. To complete her transformation, she decided to drop her name, Catherine, and started to go by her middle name, Lexy. She changed herself so much that years later, when she arrived at WSK News Channel, Anna didn’t recognise her at all.

The Law Deems Lexy as the Murderer

The truth about Lexy’s identity isn’t revealed until Anna goes to her parents’ lake house in Dahlonega with Richard. It is when she looks at the photos of her old friend from her teenage years that she discovers the transformation that she has gone through. This also makes her realise that she is the one who has been going around killing people. With Rachel, Helen, and Zoe being the only victims, the connecting thread between them is that all three of them were involved in the trauma experienced by Catherine and Anna. This would give Catherine, now Lexy, a bone to pick with the three of them. But why come back to kill them all these years later? When Jack goes through Rachel’s phone, he discovers text messages between her and Helen, where they discuss blackmailing C.

At first, he thinks that it refers to Rachel’s husband, Clyde, who is into BDSM and whose compromising videos are in Rachel’s phone. Later, however, Clyde reveals that the blackmail was actually targeted at Catherine. It seems that Rachel and Helen figured out that Catherine had reinvented herself as Lexy. Perhaps they threatened to leak this detail, including her photos as a teenager, in which she didn’t look as good. But would it really tarnish Lexy’s image so much? The truth is that Rachel had another secret from Lexy’s past to use against her. When Catherine was young and being tormented by everyone around, including her sister, Andrea, she got so angry that she did something that led to Andrea’s death.

At some point, Catherine confided this secret in Rachel, and that’s what the mean girls were using against her. Considering how big a name in media Lexy Jones had become, it would make sense that she didn’t want this to come to light. There was no evidence to prove it anyway. So, why would Lexy risk everything by killing Rachel? A search of her home reveals Rachel’s fingernails in a box, which is enough for the police officers to pin the murder on her. Eventually, however, it turns out that Lexy was nothing but a red herring. She had nothing to do with the murders. The fingernails were planted in her house by the real murderer: Anna’s mother, Alice.
