Lifetime’s ‘Abducted in the Everglades’ (also known as ‘Lost in the Everglades’) follows the story of Carly O’Connell, who is eagerly looking forward to her upcoming spring break. She and her best friend, Simone, decide to take a trip to Miami, Florida, to experience a taste of independence. On their very first night out, the latter meets a young man named Pete, and the two friends spend time with him. Later, the boy’s friend Luke joins them, who, to Carly’s surprise, happens to be her ex-boyfriend. As the night unfolds, Simone suddenly realizes she has been drugged and suffers a seizure. Panicked, Pete and Luke abandon her on the beach and take Carly with them.
Back home, Carly’s mother, Beverly, senses something is wrong when her daughter stops answering her phone. Desperate to find her, she immediately springs into action, heading to the last place Carly was seen and rallying all available resources to rescue her. Directed by Damián Romay, the film explores themes of survival, resilience, and the harrowing reality of kidnapping. Her abductor was identified as Armando Caballero, a maintenance worker at her residence who had previously expressed romantic interest in her. The film reflects a harsh reality—many crimes, particularly those against women, are often committed by individuals within their own circle. Similarly, in the film, Carly’s abduction is not a random act of violence but is orchestrated by someone from her past—her ex-boyfriend.
Another real-life case that mirrors certain elements of the film is the abduction of 17-year-old Peggy Ann Bradnick from Shade Gap, Pennsylvania, on May 11, 1966. While walking home with her siblings, she was kidnapped by William Diller Hollenbaugh, who took her deep into the wilderness and held her captive for seven days. Meanwhile, her parents, local authorities, and the community launched an extensive search, which gained national attention. Fortunately, Peggy was rescued from a farm in Burnt Cabins, Pennsylvania, bringing the harrowing ordeal to an end. Similarly, in the film, Carly is held hostage in a remote wilderness area, cut off from immediate help. Her captivity reflects the isolation and fear that real-life kidnapping victims experience.

Another important layer is introduced through the character of Ray, a local boatman who joins the rescue efforts.
