Is Lifetime’s Sins of the Bride Based on a True Story?

Helmed by Sara Lohman, Lifetime’s ‘Sins of the Bride‘ is a thriller drama movie that centers upon an unexpected turn of events during a wedding that leads to deadly consequences. Cassie and Jack are the definition of a perfect couple in the eyes of their family and friends. As their wedding day approaches, the two are excited to begin the next chapter of their lives. However, when Jack doesn’t show up on the big day, Cassie is comforted by the best man, Greg. One thing leads to another, and Cassie gets involved in an intimate fling with Greg. Not long after, she learns that Jack couldn’t come to the wedding because he met with an unfortunate accident, leading to him getting hospitalized.

While Jack is on the path to recovery, Greg moves in to offer his help as a nurse. Meanwhile, Cassie is confused about whether she should confess her affair with his best man or not. Soon, Greg shows his true colors by making deadly threats and coming between the couple’s happily ever after. Thanks to the stellar performances from Kyle Kankonde, Charlie N. Townsend, and Titus Makin Jr., the crime film is able to tap into some of the realistic themes and subject matters, such as adultery and obsession, making the story and its characters seem authentic.

Sins of the Bride is a Work of Fiction But Includes a Few Realistic Themes

Thanks to the creative abilities and penmanship of Amy Irons and Sara Lohman, the latter had a fictional yet enthralling screenplay to bring to life. As out of the world as the narrative of ‘Sins of the Bride’ seems, you might be surprised to learn how many love triangles in real life tend to take a deadly turn, where one of the parties involved resorts to murder, similar to Greg. The case involving Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III, Kemia Hassel, and Jeremy Cuellar is one such instance. On December 31, 2018, Tyrone met his untimely demise after his wife, Kemia, and her secret lover, Jeremy, plotted the murder. Jeremy reportedly laid the fatal shot in the driveway of Tyrone’s father’s home in Michigan.

Although Kemia called 911 and informed the authorities about the crime, she was also involved in the murder. Both of them were proven guilty of killing Tyrone. While Kemia received a life imprisonment sentence, Jeremy was sentenced to 65 to 90 years in prison. However, not all cases of a cheating partner involve bloodshed. In late August 2024, when a bride-to-be named Lindsay Slater found out about her fiancé’s affair, she decided to make the most of the $46,000 wedding party that the two had planned. Rescheduling it to a later date and renaming it a “celebration of freedom,” she hosted the reception without her ex-partner that consisted of speeches, a sit-down meal, a DJ party, and about 60-70 guests.

Like the Lifetime movie, there was a real-life case involving the groom learning about an affair between the bride and his best man. However,  instead of taking a dark turn like ‘Sins of the Bride,’ it takes a rather astonishing turn. On the Unfiltered Bride podcast, the hosts discussed how the groom reportedly made the bride’s infidelity public by announcing it on the wedding day and handing out photos of the bride being intimate with the best man. After exposing the bride, the groom and his family members stormed out of the event, leaving her and her family to pay the reception bill. Although several aspects of the story replicate life in more than one way, they only serve as the mere foundation of the narrative while the storylines are all fragments of the writers’ imagination.
