The greatest heartbreak a mother can endure is losing her child, and for Lilly Tokuhara, that unimaginable pain became reality when she discovered the remains of her son, Jon Tokuhara, at his office in Waipahu, Hawaii. What followed were years of grief intertwined with an unrelenting pursuit of justice. Despite the emotional toll, Lilly showed strength in attending hearings and standing firm in her resolve to see accountability served. Her bravery and resilience became a driving force in ensuring that her son’s story was not forgotten. NBC’s ‘Dateline: The Bucket Hat Mystery’ captures her fight for justice and unwavering courage.
Lilly Tokuhara Was the One to Find the Remains of Her Son
Lilly Tokuhara and her husband, Walter Haruo Tokuhara, built their lives together in Hawaii, where family was always at the center of their world. Their two children, Jon and Sissy, were their greatest source of pride, and for Lilly, her kids truly were her everything. When Walter passed away in 1995, it was an incredibly difficult time, but Lilly leaned on her children and found the strength to move forward. As life went on, joy returned, especially with the arrival of her grandsons, Matthew and Elliott, who brought boundless happiness into her days. She adored spending time with them and remained a constant pillar of love and support for her family.
On January 13, 2022, when Lilly went to her son Jon’s clinic in Waipahu, Hawaii, she was devastated by what she found. Jon was lying in a pool of blood, and in a panic, she immediately called 911. When dispatchers asked her to check if he was still breathing, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Jon had been shot four times in the face, a reality too horrific for her to grasp. Paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead, marking the beginning of Lilly’s long fight for justice. Learning about Jon’s affair with Joyce Thompson shocked her, and though Eric Thompson’s arrest in February 2022 brought hope, it was only the start of a long journey.

Eric Thompson’s first trial began in July 2023, where Lilly Tokuhara bravely took the stand. She described in painful detail how she had found her son, Jon, and broke down several times while reliving the trauma. Despite her courage, the case ended in a mistrial. In January 2024, Lilly filed a civil lawsuit against Thompson and was determined to keep fighting. By February 2025, she once again faced the stand, giving the same heartbreaking testimony. When Thompson was finally found guilty, Lilly breathed a sigh of relief, grateful the long ordeal was over.
The judge acknowledged her strength, saying, “I am convinced that Jon lived well and that whatever time he had on earth, he made good use of it and that his friends, family, and the community around him were better for him. I again am sorry for your loss. I hope you can find some measure of peace going forward.” Though the loss of Jon will always remain with her, Lilly finds strength in her daughter, Sissy Amado, and the love of her grandsons, as they continue to heal together, hand in hand.
