‘Love Death + Robots’ presents an anthology show that jumps around different genres, animation styles, and short storylines with self-contained narratives. With its season 4, the Netflix show continues to delve into intriguing premises that unravel in thought-provoking ways. In episode 4, titled ‘400 Boys,’ the audience plunged into a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where survival is achieved in packs that reign over their own turfs. However, when a might outside threat looms over the heads of these individualistic factions, any sense of inter-group rivalry must be put to the side in favor of a united front. Thus, as these groups, ruled by the principles of ancient warriors, come together, the charge toward a gruesome battle for survival is inevitable. SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Brothers Assemble the Forces of Fun City
The story opens with a weathered-down faction, known as the Brothers, who have already dwindled in numbers due to the cosmic horror that awaits them outside in the city. Two of them, Jade and Croak, spied a couple of Giants reveling in the burning streets earlier. Their strength is so monumental that they were even able to uproot an entire bridge and hurl it into the sun. Once the Brothers come out of their hideout to scout the damage around the city, they learn that the Giants have even managed to destroy other factions, including most of the Soooooots, leaving only one survivor: Hilo, leader Slash’s sworn rival. Still, adding the survivor to their numbers, the group traverses to the Galrogs’ territory, where they recruit the help of fierce female warriors on roller skates. Thus, together these three factions manage to round up the other survivors and march down to 400th Street, to face their enemy, the freshly christened 400 boys.
400 Boys Ending: Who are the Giants? Why Did They Attack Fun City?
As the surviving factions, now united under one shared cause, step into battle against the Giants, their enemies are finally revealed to the narrative. The Giants are three titan-sized babies intent on death and mass destruction. Even though the origins of these monstrous infants are never revealed, one can make some assumptions through context. The Fun City seems to be the last hub of human survival in the aftermath of the end of modern civilization. A nuclear war in “The South” shattered the world, bringing it to its last legs. As a result, in the post-apocalyptic landscape, the North survives through Fun City, which is ruled by human factions. It’s also possible that the same nuclear war and its radiation are responsible for bestowing the telekinetic powers upon the surviving humans.
However, as the Galrogs’ elder, The Mother, reveals, once the world had been broken, outside threats oozed in through the cracks. Therefore, it is likely that the Giant Babies that plan on laying waste to Fun City are one such otherworldly threat. In the planet’s weakened state, the humans have earned a new colossal enemy. Nonetheless, when such a tragedy strikes, the survivors are able to put aside their differences and team up for their shared benefit. Even Slash, who still wears the scar of Hilo’s blade, welcomes the latter by his side on the battlefield when the time comes. As such, thematically, these Giants become a representation of the unknown, whose threat is enough to unite even the most disjointed of civilizations. Ultimately, this unity helps the survivors take a stand against their enemy.
For the first wave of the attack, the humans band together to attack the Giants with their mental powers, which shoot the latter with charged blue beams. As a result, the Babies shrink notably in size, allowing the factions to move forward with a physical attack. Blades, staffs, and even broken buildings all become weaponry employed against the invaders. In the end, the survivors manage to bring each Baby down one by one. As Hilo takes on the last one standing, he becomes its final victim. Nonetheless, the Galrogs’ Bala avenges him by slicing the Giant Baby’s arm in half. Afterward, Slash delivers the final blow by shooting the invader with his gun, ending its reign of terror once and for all. The Giants had attempted to seize Fun City under the assumption that civilization’s end had weakened the humans. Yet, they ended up only providing the survivors with a reason to unite and stand stronger than ever.
