Created by Catalina Aguilar Mastretta, Netflix’s ‘Lovesick,’ also known as ‘Mal de amores,’ adapts the eponymous novel by Ángeles Mastretta, bringing the sprawling love story of Emilia Sauri and Daniel Cuenca to the screen. Set during the Mexican Revolution, the show tracks the many ways in which Emilia and Daniel are almost destined to end up together and the many ways in which their relationship is doomed to fail. By the end of season 1, things seem to be looking up, as they leave the village of Chihuahua and slowly make their way back to the towns.
However, when Daniel’s past as a revolutionary catches up to him, Emilia makes the heavy choice to end things for good. Soon after, she returns to Puebla and begins a new chapter in her life, this time with Dr. Zavalza. While Netflix has not announced a second season as of writing, there is still a lot of intrigue left in this love story. In the best-case scenario, fans can expect a second season to be released sometime around 2028.
Lovesick Season 2 Can Expand on the Final Chapters of the Love Triangle
While the creators of ‘Lovesick’ have not greenlit a second season as of writing, the story still has room for a potential sequel. Though the first season does adapt the original novel by Ángeles Mastretta all the way to the end, the final stretch of the story is relatively rushed through. For instance, Emilia’s journey to becoming a renowned doctor and, eventually, a mother is conveyed mostly through a montage, yet it leaves many questions unanswered about her mental state throughout. With the revolution largely concluded, the story effectively enters an era of peace, and a potential sequel can chart how Emilia, Daniel, and Zavalza’s love story unfolds without any external conflicts dominating their lives.
Another mystery that a potential season 2 can touch up on is what exactly happens to Daniel after he is last seen in America. Everything implies that it is his last encounter with Emilia, and we don’t know where he ends up afterward or whether he even survives. While the revolution may be reaching its end in-universe, many people still have a vendetta against him, and a sequel can continue its twists and turns over whether Daniel lives or dies each time he separates from Emilia. There is also Sol and Salvador’s love story, which seems to be flourishing by the end of the season finale. Because of the timeskip, we hardly get an update on how their story ends, and that can be fixed by adding a completely new chapter to the tale.
Lovesick Season 2 Might Not Feature Daniel at All
Given that a potential second season of ‘Lovesick’ would be treading entirely new ground, the question of which actors might return does not have a clear answer. That said, actor Renata Vaca is most likely to reprise her role for a sequel, given that this is ultimately the story of Emilia Sauri. Fans can also expect actor Iván Amozurrutia to return as Antonio Zavalza, as he is the person Emilia eventually ends up with. However, the real mystery lies in whether actor Juan Pablo Fuentes will step back into the role of Daniel Cuenca. Since he and Emilia most likely never meet again, there isn’t much narrative scope for his comeback. And the possibility that he might be dead only increases the chances of his absence. However, given how important their relationship is to the story, fans can always be in for a surprise.
If a potential sequel continues from the events of season 1, without any large time skips, actors Miguel Rodarte and Diana Bovio are also likely to return as Diego Sauri and Josefa Veytia, who play Emilia’s parents. Actors Alejandro Puente and Sofía Carrera might also have a greater presence going forward, given that their respective characters, Salvador Cuenca and Sol Garcia, seemingly begin a romantic relationship. With Milagros recovering from a serious illness, actor Cassandra Ciangherotti is also likely to step back into the role. The same, however, cannot be said about the character of Dr. Octavio Cuenca, whose death in season 1 means that actor Humberto Zurita will probably not return for a sequel.
Lovesick Season 2 Can Bridge the Story to the 1960s
The larger narrative structure of ‘Lovesick’ is one of Emilia and Daniel being separated, seemingly by fate if not their actions, only to get back together months later. In that vein, the season finale can also be interpreted as the start of a new arc, where Daniel might just eventually return. This puts Emilia in a rather unique spot, as the ending also implies that she eventually marries Zavalza. This push and pull has been a staple of the story from the start, but can also turn into a larger, generational saga if the show continues with a sequel. We also know very little about how the stories of Emilia’s parents, friends, and relatives end, and while the timeline up to the 1960s may already be set, there is enough room to invent the finer details of this long journey.
Though season 1 of ‘Lovesick’ may technically be a complete adaptation, it is not unusual for creators to develop TV-original sequels. Shows like ‘The Hunting Wives,’ ‘My Life with the Walter Boys,’ and ‘Finding Her Edge‘ are all known for diverging from their respective source material around season 2, and the same can be achieved in the case of ‘Lovesick.’ There is also the added historical element of this story, which gives the writing team a blueprint for what real-life events can be integrated into the larger world. Ultimately, though, the chances of a second season coming to life largely rest on how much the show resonates with viewers.
