Where is Luis Renteria Now? Accused Guilty or Innocent Update

When Luis Renteria was involved in a domestic shootout in El Paso, Texas, in late 2021, he ended up killing a 16-year-old boy and injuring his father. The entire case and the investigation that ensued are covered in a detailed manner in the episode titled ‘Deadly Ex-Marine or Family Defender?’ of A&E’s ‘Accused: Guilty or Innocent?’ While he claimed that he acted in self-defense, the prosecution put forward various arguments that contradicted the accused’s claims. In the documentary, Luis features in an exclusive interview and recounts his version of the events that transpired on the fateful night.

Luis Renteria Claimed Self-Defense in the Case of Isaiah Lerma’s Murder

Born to Paula Renteria, Luis Renteria was raised in El Paso, Texas. The environment within the four walls of his household might be loving, but outside of it, violence loomed large as he lived in a neighborhood with constant gang-related activity, such as shootings and drug trafficking. In order to look for better opportunities and escape from the surrounding violence, he left El Paso altogether in 1990 and joined the US Marine Corps. He also gained experience in training more than 30,000 people in the use of weapons. After serving the nation for several years, he returned to El Paso but resided in a property located on Durazno Avenue next to Lincoln Park under the Spaghetti Bowl.

Little did he know that an unexpected confrontation with violence awaited him. On the night of December 30, 2021, Luis’ nephew knocked on his door all of a sudden and confided in him about a complicated situation he found himself in with his girlfriend. After her father threatened the nephew, he matched his threats and told him that he was ready for a one-on-one fight. When the nephew told Luis that his girlfriend’s father might be coming down to the house, the two moved to the backyard and waited for his arrival. Instead of going alone, the father reportedly brought five people with him, including his daughter, his 16-year-old son Isaiah Lerma, and two other women. The group of people entered the backyard of Luis’ house, and his nephew was allegedly attacked and taken to the ground.

When the father allegedly brandished a knife to stab the nephew, Luis tried to intervene. However, he said that it aggravated the situation further as the knife-wielding man turned on him, after which Luis pulled out his concealed gun and shot him in the leg to stop the threat. Simultaneously, Isaiah allegedly fired multiple shots at Luis and struck him once on the hips. As per Luis’ accounts, he then returned fire and fired two rounds at the teenager, one of them being the fatal shot to the head. In the aftermath of the incident, Isaiah was hospitalized at the University Medical Center of El Paso but ended up succumbing to the gunshot wound. Meanwhile, 49-year-old Luis and the victim’s father were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Luis Renteria Pled Guilty to a Lesser Charge and is Currently on Probation

Luis Renteria’s clean rap sheet soon got tainted five months after the shooting incident that resulted in the demise of 16-year-old Isaiah Lerma. In May 2022, he was arrested by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force in Garland, Texas, and extradited to El Paso. On May 12, 2022, he was not only charged with the murder of Isaiah but also with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Under a total bond of $750,000 ($500,000 for the murder charge and $250,000 for the aggravated assault charge), he was held at the El Paso County Detention Facility.

However, his bail conditions were met, after which Luis returned home and continued working as a delivery driver in Dallas, Texas. Around April 2024, the prosecution offered to dismiss the murder case against Luis. In return, they wanted him to plead guilty to the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. El Paso District Attorney, Bill Hicks, told ABC-7, “I would say that the defendant had a self-defense claim, and it was going to be difficult for us to overcome that self-defense claim had we gone to trial.” After much consideration, Luis agreed to the proposed plea deal, which was also accepted by the judge.

Thus, although his murder charge was dismissed, Luis was sentenced to seven years in deferred probation, which is a legal arrangement that allows the accused to avoid conviction or sentencing by meeting specific court-ordered requirements. Isaiah’s mother, Ruby Lerma, expressed her disappointment at the sentencing and claimed that justice was not served. “What was given to (Renteria) was not enough, no matter what it would have been. It’s still not going to bring him back, but I feel he deserves some kind of justice. I feel like nothing was done today for him,” she said. As of today, Luis Renteria seems to be leading a regular life under supervision but prefers to keep the details away from the limelight.
