Where is Lulu Sosa Now? Update on the Wife Who Hired a Hitman

Ramon and Lulu Sosa were once a picture-perfect married couple with a successful business. So, it came as a shock to everybody when Lulu began plotting the murder of her husband after the marriage deteriorated. CBS’ ’48 Hours: Coached to Kill’ delves deep into the deadly plan hatched by Lulu and how Ramon managed to get her arrested by getting the authorities involved with the help of his friend, Mundo. In the end, she was trapped by the detectives after she believed an undercover agent to be a hitman who had gotten rid of her husband for good.

Lulu Sosa Plotted to Have Ramon Sosa Killed For Life Insurance Money

Hailing from Mexico, Maria de Lourdes “Lulu” Durantes relocated to the US for a fresh start with her son and daughter after her divorce. In 2007, she came across a retired professional boxer named Ramon Sosa at a nightclub. As the two got to talking, they developed romantic feelings for one another and began dating. A couple of years later, on March 15, 2009, they exchanged marital vows and tied the knot, making their relationship official in the eyes of the law. Together, Ramon and Lulu Sosa opened Woodlands Boxing and Fitness, where the latter was a bookkeeper and a personal trainer.

According to Ramon, about a couple of years into the marriage, they began getting into arguments. He alleged that she became jealous of Ramon’s kids, including a daughter named Mia, from a previous relationship. Ramon said, “I felt like now she had a nice home, she had money — her whole attitude changed. She just wasn’t the same person.” In March 2015, she hired a divorce attorney and filed for divorce. In her filing, she alleged her husband had been physically abusing her. Despite the tension between them, they shared the same roof but lived on different floors. A few months later, she talked to her daughter and expressed how she wished that Ramon were dead so as to acquire his wealth and life insurance money. Mundo, Ramon’s loyal friend, overheard the conversation.

As Mundo pretended to be on her side, she asked him to get her in touch with a hitman, given his former affiliations with a gang. Soon, Mundo told Ramon all about her plan to have him killed. The two decided to play along with Lulu’s plan and managed to get an audio recording of her expressing her desire to kill her husband. In the recording, she said in Spanish, “If he dies, I will have the life insurance. I will have his pension payments for the rest of my life. My life will be set. He worked so hard for his retirement. And now I am going to work hard for my retirement. This is my retirement, Mundo. His life is my retirement.” She had also given Mundo $100 in advance for arranging the hit, which she demanded to take place on or before July 22, 2015.

Lulu Sosa Was Apprehended After Police Staged Ramon’s Fake Death

On July 15, 2015, Ramon and Mundo then submitted the evidence to the Montgomery County Constable’s Office and told the authorities about Lulu’s murderous plot. In order to catch her red-handed, the police conducted an undercover operation with the help of an undercover detective who posed as a hitman. After meeting her, recording more evidence of her scheme, and collecting the cash she offered to get the job done, the authorities decided to stage the fake murder scene of Ramon. On July 21, 2015, Ramon applied makeup showing a fake bullet hole on his head and lay still in a shallow grave in the middle of nowhere.

The detectives then clicked pictures of him posing as a corpse. The following day, the undercover agent met with Lulu and showed her proof that her job had been done, after which she gave him the remaining cash and valuables for the hit. While Ramon was safely placed in a hotel, the authorities arrested her on July 23 at the family’s boxing gym and charged her with the solicitation of capital murder. While awaiting her trial, she agreed to a divorce settlement that resulted in Ramon having the gym and the house.

Lulu Sosa Has Reportedly Been on Parole Since Late 2023

More than a year after her arrest, on October 11, 2016, Lulu Sosa pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree solicitation of murder and avoided trial. Thus, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison with time served, but was not given the right to appeal. After spending about 7 years behind bars, she was seemingly released on parole in November 2023. Serving the rest of her time under a very strict parole, she was ordered not to have any contact with Ramon Sosa and his family. For at least the first year of her parole, she had to wear an ankle monitor at all times and attend anger management classes. Although her records have not been public and there’s not much info about her whereabouts today, it appears that Lulu is still out on parole.
