The fifth season of Netflix’s ‘You’ brings a new set of characters. Having married Kate Lockwood at the end of the fourth season, Joe Goldberg is brought into the inner circle of her wife’s family, where she is loved and hated in almost the same measure. While many people in the family don’t take kindly to Joe, there is one woman with whom he gets more love than expected. It is Kate’s half-sister, Maddie, whose twin, Reagan, absolutely abhors Joe and wants to bring Kate down from her high horse since she became the company’s CEO. Being twins, there is enough drama between Maddie and Reagan, and much of it concerns Harrison. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Maddie’s Love for Harrison Led Her to Suffer Reagan’s Terror for Years
Maddie and Reagan were born on the same day. They had the same face and shared the same last name. But the commonalities between them did not stop there. They also fell for the same man: Harrison. While there is too much history to figure out who fell for him first, from Maddie’s point of view, she had always been in love with him, and when Reagan found out about it, she decided to have Harrison for herself because she didn’t want to see her sister happy. What made things more complicated was that Harrison, too, seemed to reciprocate Maddie’s love, but he seemed too intimidated by Reagan to act upon it.
The nature of Reagan’s cruelty came to the fore when she asked Maddie to be the surrogate for her and Harrison’s child. At first, it seemed that this was because Reagan did not want to experience the ups and downs of pregnancy and the impact it would have on her body. The real reason, however, was to make her sister even more miserable. By being the surrogate, Maddie would effectively have a child with Harrison, but once the child was out of her womb, it would belong to Reagan, and Maddie could hold no ownership over the child.
It isn’t until much later that Maddie discovers that Reagan chose her to be the surrogate because she knew Harrison loved her, too. In this way, she also wanted to torture her husband. Had Reagan been kinder to her sister, she would have seen that she was standing between her and Harrison’s happiness. The only reason that he did not divorce Reagan was because of the conditions of the prenup, which would strip him of everything he ever held dear. His wife would ensure he was destroyed in every sense of the term. However, all this changes when Reagan dies.
Maddie and Harrison’s Happily Ever After Comes After a Lot of Struggle
Maddie would have gone about her life, loving Harrison from afar, if it weren’t for Joe. He kidnaps her and then forces her to kill Reagan and then impersonate her to prevent Kate’s reputation from being demolished in the media. Because Maddie is forced to live as Reagan, she is close to Harrison and their daughter, but at the same time, she couldn’t be farther from them because she is forced to be mean like her sister. Eventually, however, Harrison discovers what has happened. After much thought, he decides to keep his mouth shut about it, even though he disapproves of Joe’s actions and Reagan’s death. For a while, it seems that everything will be okay, especially now that Maddie’s conscience is clean. However, they trust Joe too much, and when the time comes, he frames both of them for Raegan’s murder.
Joe plants the victim’s teeth in Harrison’s car, and when the cops find it, they blame the husband for his wife’s murder. Soon, Maddie is also entangled in this mess, and she only comes out when Harrison confesses to the murder and takes the blame for the whole thing upon himself. While Maddie is free, she is angry with Joe about betraying her and Harrison, who kept his secrets when they could have easily exposed him. Motivated by her anger, she decides to burn down Mooney’s with Joe inside it. Eventually, the events turn out such that Joe is arrested and held accountable for his crimes. With this, his role in Reagan’s death also comes to light, meaning that Harrison is given a clean chit and goes back to his everyday life. For cooperating with the authorities, Maddie gets away with minimal punishment.
When the storm has passed, there is nothing but clear skies for Maddie and Harrison. Now that Reagan is dead, there is no one preventing them from being together. So, they get married and spend the rest of their lives in each other’s company. Maddie is also happy to be with her daughter, whom she gave birth to but could never call her own. On top of that, she also gets pregnant with twins, which means that Harrison and she have a bright future and no dark cloud hanging over their lives to strip them of their happiness. They truly receive their happily ever after, no matter how much of a mess they had to walk through to get there.
