When the news of the murder of an estranged married couple, Michael and April Holton, broke out, it rattled the entire community of Eclectic, Alabama. Given the mysterious circumstances surrounding their sudden demise, the authorities took some time before gathering enough evidence against the deceased couple’s son, Madison Holton, who was the only person present in the house at the time of the murder. NBC’s ‘Dateline: 11 Minutes’ delves deep into the case and the investigation that ensued. The documentary also features an exclusive interview with Madison, who shares his account of the fateful day.
Madison Holton Was the Prime Suspect in the Murder of His Parents
Jesse “Madison” Holton was born to April and Michael Holton. He was raised alongside two younger siblings. Growing up in the town of Eclectic, Alabama, Madison was a shy kid who was frequently picked on by others at school. As he got older and wiser, he became popular among his peers as he loved to be the class clown and make others laugh. However, in his teenage years, he got involved with the wrong crowd and developed a liking for recreational drugs. Around the same time, the marriage between his parents deteriorated to the point that his mother, April, filed for divorce in the summer of 2016. A few months later, on September 11, 2016, Madison threw a house party and invited several of his friends while his father was at work.

In an unexpected turn of events, Michael found out, called his estranged wife to the house, handcuffed their son to discipline him, and even called the authorities to file a juvenile petition against his son. About 11 minutes after the visiting officer left the premises, another 911 call was placed regarding a shooting incident at the Holton house. When the authorities arrived, they found Michael Holton dead while April was barely clinging to her life. The following day, she was also pronounced dead at the hospital. Since Madison was unharmed, he became the prime suspect in the case. When he was questioned about it, Madison claimed that his parents got involved in a physical altercation after the deputy left the house.
According to him, after he caught his father being violent towards his mother in the bedroom, he ran towards the neighbor’s house, which was nearly 200 feet away, to get help. As for the gunshots, he denied hearing them. While he claimed that it was a case of murder suicide, the investigators suspected that the accused shot his parents after learning that they were going to take him to juvenile court. Moreover, a state pathologist also classified Michael Holton’s death as a homicide. Madison insisted on giving a polygraph test to prove his innocence. However, in light of the circumstantial evidence against Madison, the 17-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with the murder of his parents.
The Charges Against Madison Holton Were Dismissed
After his arrest, Madison Holton spent about 15 months locked up in the Elmore County Jail. During the tough period, his mother’s family, including her twin brothers, Mike Evans and Chris Owenby, who were police officers, advocated for him and stood by his side. As per Madison, his cellmate, Randy, treated him like a brother, making his experience in jail better. It was Randy who encouraged Madison to turn to religion and find God, which ultimately helped him get through a rough period in his life. Finally, on December 18, 2017, he was bonded out of jail by Chris and his wife, allowing him to await his trial with his remaining family.
On October 22, 2018, Madison’s trial for the murders of April and Michael Holton commenced. Fortunately for him, the prosecution realized that they did not have enough evidence against the defendant despite investigating the case for nearly two years. Thus, the state dismissed the two murder charges against him, and he was allowed to walk out of the courtroom a free man. After the charges were dropped, his first priority was to get his life back on track and reconnect with his two younger brothers to form a strong bond once again. However, he wanted them to take their time and reach out to him before he reached out to them.
