Guz Khan will bring his transcultural comedy to Birmingham once again! BBC’s ‘Man Like Mobeen’ season 5 is slated to begin filming in Birmingham, England, in November 2024. Khan and Andy Milligan, the creator of the series, penned the fifth season, with Akaash Meeda returning as the director.
Towards the end of the fourth season, Mobeen is in prison and gets in trouble with fellow inmate Megalodon after becoming a designated listener. With a few weeks left on his sentence, he begins to grow close to Nida, an infirmary doctor, and gets her help to place Aqsa on the path to getting a medical degree. He is also forced by Harper and Nate to glean information on Colin from Nida when he meets her.
The installment concludes with Harper and Mobeen helping Jamal with his lost children. A prison riot begins, throwing everything into chaos. During the scuffle, Megalodon is knocked out, and Mobeen and Sajid successfully escape, meeting the Chaplain outside. We learn that Nida is actually Khan’s daughter, and the finale ends with Mobeen waking up with his loved ones around him.
Actor-comedian Guz Khan has been focusing on tapping into peoples’ authentic stories – especially those of the immigrant community – and portraying them through the series. In the fifth season, we will likely continue to see such inspired narratives alongside the current storyline. In addition to Khan as Mobeen Deen, we can expect the fifth installment to feature Tolu Ogunmefun as Nate and Dúaa Karim as Aqsa.
“It has got better at including more people,” said Khan about the TV industry in the UK. “But, for South Asian communities, I think we’re still stuck a little bit. People think, obviously, worldwide, we’ve got Bollywood. But when it comes to being represented here, I don’t think the job is being done properly. There’s a lot of different categories within the South Asian community alone,” he added.
The previous seasons of the show were also filmed in Birmingham. In particular, the characters are shown to be from lower-income neighborhoods in Small Heath, and the prison scenes in the fourth installment were shot in a real prison in Shrewsbury. “Up until now, Small Heath has been a character in its own right,” Guz explained in the aforementioned interview. “We always had Birmingham as a center. Shooting in a prison in Shrewsbury, it was weird, bro,” he added. Other films and shows shot in and around Birmingham include ‘Euphoria,’ ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle,’ ‘Stan & Ollie,’ ‘Nativity!’ and ‘Citizen Khan.’
