Mandy Rose Reynolds Murder: Where is Derek Daigneault Now?

In the episode titled ‘Man’s Best Friend’ of ‘Homicide Hunter: American Detective,’ the primary focus is on the horrific killing of a 26-year-old woman named Amanda “Mandy” Rose Reynolds in April 2023. With the help of her labradoodle, the detectives were able to begin their investigation and apprehend the perpetrator behind the gruesome murder. The documentary features exclusive, insightful interviews with Mandy’s loved ones and the officials who worked hard to solve the case.

Mandy Rose Reynolds’ Remains Were Unidentifiable Until Her Dog Helped the Police

Amanda Rose Reynolds was welcomed into the world on August 2, 1996 in North Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada. She was the beloved daughter of Randy Reynolds and Karleen Hardy, who raised her with immense love, care and warmth. Affectionately referred to as Mandy by her loved ones, Amanda seemingly spent her early years in her home state before relocating to Idaho. She ultimately decided to move to Texas, specifically to San Marcos, where she planned to further her studies by enrolling in college. She was a kindhearted individual who lived with her furry baby, Titan, a white Labradoodle she highly doted upon. Amanda lived life on her own terms and drove a black Honda Accord.

While Amanda had a bright future, she sadly could never realize her dreams as she was killed in April 2023. On April 5, the police responded to a brush fire report in a field in Robinson, Texas, and found unidentified remains in a plastic storage bin near a subdivision on Heston Circle, east of Interstate 35. According to police reports, the person was set on fire in the container, and the remains were “burned beyond recognition.” They also obtained a vacated .380 shell casing in the bin, indicating at least a shot being fired. Just nearby, the authorities spotted a white-haired labradoodle who would not stop barking “frantically.” He reportedly stayed put and resisted detainment from the authorities, indicating that something was amiss.

Even when the remains were moved, the dog remained on the spot and was soon spotted by a local, who informed the people at Robinson Animal Control. Soon after Robinson Animal Control took the dog into their care, they found a microchip on him that revealed his name and the owner’s details, leading authorities to identify the remains as Amanda Rose Reynolds. After learning of the same, the police reached the 26-year-old’s residence but were greeted with a shocking sight. Not only were her belongings missing, but her car was also missing from her place. According to the medical examiner, dental records helped officially confirm Amanda’s identity. The cause of death of the young woman was determined to be a gunshot wound to her head.

The Killer Was Spotted Driving Mandy Rose Reynolds’ Car in Kansas

During the investigation, the authorities sought to locate Mandy Rose Reynolds’ missing car. By checking the license plate database, they learned it was somewhere in Wichita, Kansas. On April 8, 2023, when the car was spotted near Wichita, police tried to pull the driver over, but the driver led police on a high-speed pursuit for about 30 minutes. Despite the driver crashing Mandy’s car into another vehicle, the chase continued when the suspect began running and hid inside a grocery store. Soon, the man was taken into custody and was identified as Derek Joseph Daigneault, Mandy’s cousin. Upon searching the car, the detectives found a .380 handgun.

Suspecting his involvement in the murder, the police then delved deeper into his movements around the time Mandy’s killing took place. Surveillance footage from a San Marcos Walmart on the morning of April 4, 2023, showed him buying a storage container identical to the one her remains were found inside. He also reportedly purchased a gas can and a shovel from the store. The video showed him driving away in Mandy’s car with her dog, Titan. At the time, Derek was on felony probation and had an arrest warrant out for him for an unrelated crime. He had previously been involved in various crimes, including aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated robbery, attempted interference with law enforcement, aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm at a residence, possession of methamphetamine, and more.

When the bullet found inside Mandy’s body and the shell casing found by the police were tested against the handgun found in Derek’s possession at the time of his arrest, the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab confirmed that both were fired by that same gun. According to Mandy’s mother, Derek reached out to her daughter under false pretenses and convinced her to drive from San Marcos, Texas, to Kansas to pick him up. He then reportedly stayed with her at her place for about a month before killing her.

Derek Daigneault is Currently Incarcerated at a Kansas Prison Facility

In January 2024, Derek Daigneault pleaded guilty to fleeing or attempting to elude officers, criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, aggravated battery, and theft. In March 2024, in exchange for his guilty plea, he was sentenced to 111 months in prison for those crimes. A few months later, in November 2024, Derek stood trial for Mandy Rose Reynolds’ murder. During the four-day trial, the prosecution highlighted his prior run-ins with the law and presented incriminating evidence. Mandy’s father, Randy Reynolds, took the stand and told the jury how Mandy had been scared of Derek in the days prior to her murder. He testified that he had advised her to keep her distance from her cousin and that he would travel to San Marcos and help her move.

The jury deliberated for about 35 minutes before reaching the final verdict. On November 7, Derek was convicted of killing his 26-year-old cousin. During the sentencing hearing, Mandy’s family members gave emotional victim impact statements. While her brother was giving his statement, the convict shouted at him, accusing him of a crime. When Derek didn’t remain silent, deputies escorted him out. Ultimately, he was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in Mandy’s death. More than a year later, in April 2026, he and his defense counsel filed a motion to get his conviction and sentencing overturned. However, the Court of Appeals denied the appeal and upheld the conviction. As of today, 30-year-old Derek is serving his sentence at Hutchinson Correctional Facility in Hutchinson, Kansas, with his earliest possible release date scheduled for October 2029.
