The third season of Netflix’s ‘Ginny & Georgia’ presents yet another complicated circle of relationships as all characters struggle through their individual challenges. One of the characters who goes through a rather rough time is Marcus Baker. He has been struggling with depression, which has alienated him a lot of people and led to the break-up with Ginny, whom he is still in love with. Interestingly, he does build new relationships this season, and one of the people he gets surprisingly close to is Abby, who is going through issues of her own. Does this mean that there is going to be a romantic angle in their story, or will they be entirely platonic? SPOILERS AHEAD.
Marcus and Abby’s Bond Over Their Silent Struggles
While Marcus and Abby do develop a strong relationship over the course of the third season, what they have remains platonic. They do not get entangled in a romance (at least not so far), and the reason behind this is that their connection is forged over their struggles, which they are dealing with privately. Marcus’ depression has been getting worse, despite his efforts to get better. What bugs him is how desperate everyone is for him to get better and back to normal as soon as possible. Most of them, especially his mother, don’t seem to understand that getting better is not as easy or a straight line as it looks. This leads him to turn to alcohol, which aggravates things even further.
Meanwhile, Abby is going through some stuff of her own. Since her parents’ divorce, her mother has become inattentive towards her, which has led Abby to seek attention and love somewhere else. Moreover, she has been struggling with an eating disorder, which she tries to keep a secret because she feels ashamed of it. Even when her friends find out about it and try to show their support, she is not yet ready to talk about it, or even accept that she has a problem. This has, in a way, isolated her from the people around her, and Marcus can relate to that.
The duo had been acquaintances since childhood, and at one point, she even had a crush on him, but now, things are much different. They first find a common ground when she takes an interest in skateboarding, which he tries to teach her. Later, they meet during the dance, which Marcus is forced to attend because of his mother, and Abby doesn’t want to be there because of Samantha and Press. They don’t really talk about all their problems, but drinking in secret and being next to someone who is not going to poke them about their issues is a comfort that both of them long for. This connection further strengthens, but it never culminates in a romance.
Marcus and Abby’s Romantic Lives are on Different Tracks
While it would be easy to imagine a romance between Marcus and Abby, the third season shows that their journeys are taking incredibly different turns. For starters, Marcus is still in love with Ginny, and while he has tried to keep things platonic between them, he fails at it quite often. At the end of the season, he and Ginny kiss, confirming their feelings for each other. But before he can get into a relationship with anyone, Marcus needs to focus on himself.
He has already failed a grade, which means he will be left behind while the rest of his classmates move on. The more pressing issue for him at the moment is his alcoholism, for which he is checked into rehab. Meanwhile, Abby is on a sexual awakening of her own. While hanging out with her friends, she ends up sharing a kiss with Samantha, which confuses her. Later, she is attracted to Tris, and they share a kiss, confirming that they are both attracted to each other.
This is a revelation for Abby as, previously, she had only been attracted to boys, or at least, she had never given any thought to dating a girl. But now that she is dating Tris, a whole new world has opened up to her. Considering everything, it seems that she might identify with bisexuality, but sexuality is quite a wide spectrum, and it remains to be seen where Abby’s exploration of self takes her. In this context, Marcus may or may not factor into her romance journey, but it is clear that she has quite a few things to look forward to, while he already has a lot on his plate.
