Marian Proctor: Where is Maggie Murdaugh’s Sister Now?

In June 2021, Maggie Murdaugh passed away in South Carolina, and her husband, Alex Murdaugh, was later convicted of the killing. Following her death, one of the few family members from Maggie’s side who remained publicly involved was her elder sister, Marian Proctor. Marian appeared as the prosecution’s witness, and her testimony helped strengthen the case against Alex.. In Hulu’s ‘Murdaugh: Death in the Family,’ Marian’s character has a close relationship with her sister and is shown as a central figure in the everyday life and ongoing dynamics of the Murdaugh family.

Marian Proctor Spoke to Her Sister the Day She Was Killed

Marian Proctor was raised alongside her sister, Maggie Murdaugh, in the Nashville area. Their parents, Kennedy Hubbard and Terry Lee Branstetter, provided both daughters with opportunities and encouraged them to become strong, independent women. Eventually, the sisters relocated to South Carolina; while Marian settled in Sullivan, Maggie married Alex Murdaugh and built her life there. Marian often spoke about the close relationship they shared, noting that they communicated frequently, almost daily. She described Maggie as a kind and loving person who wholeheartedly adored her sons and cherished her family life.

In a later testimony, Marian recalled that on the night Maggie was shot, June 7, 2020, she had spoken with her sister over the phone. According to Marian, Maggie had initially wanted to stay at the family’s beach house in Edisto rather than go to the hunting estate. Marian encouraged her to go, telling her, “Maggie, Alex and his dad are super close, so that’s probably what you should do, go be with him if he needs you.” This was the last conversation Marian had with Maggie, and the following day, she learned of the deaths of Maggie and her nephew, Paul Murdaugh.

Marian Proctor Prefers to Keep a Low Profile Today

Marian Proctor tends to stay out of the public eye, though she did testify for the prosecution during Alex Murdaugh’s trial in March 2023. On the stand, she became emotional while recounting a conversation she had with her brother-in-law, Alex. According to her testimony, a few days after the initial events, she called him to ask whether Maggie or Paul had suffered before their deaths. Alex assured her they had not, but added that whoever committed the killings had planned it for a long time, which Marian found unsettling. He also reportedly told Marian that his primary concern was clearing Paul’s name regarding the boating accident, rather than focusing on catching the murderer, which she thought was strange.

She also alleged that more than a decade ago, Maggie had kicked Alex out of the house over an alleged affair. She said that after the death, she expressed worry for Alex and Maggie’s older son, Buster Murdaugh, though Alex did not appear concerned. Since the trial, Marian has maintained a low profile. She was spotted near her home in Sullivan, South Carolina, following Alex’s sentencing, but has made no public statements since then. It is known that she has daughters, though few details of her personal life are publicly available.
