Mary Bukovskis: Where is Angela Diaz’s Former Friend Now?

Netflix’s ‘A Toxic Love Story’ examines the case in which Ian and Angela Diaz were ultimately found guilty of fraud and several other charges. While many questions surrounding the case remain unanswered, the documentary features an interview with Mary Bukovskis, one of Angela’s close friends, before she met Ian. Mary recounted her experiences with Angela and spoke about the nature of their friendship. She also explained the series of events that eventually led to its breakdown.

Mary Bukovskis Cut Her Hair Short in Solidarity With Her Friend

Mary Bukovskis first met Angela Connell in 2014, and the two quickly became friends. Mary remembered Angela as a warm and loving person. According to her, Angela took a genuine interest in her life. She would often ask about her son, attend his soccer games, and spend hours talking with him. Before long, Angela confided in Mary that she had been diagnosed with stage four cervical cancer and shared her fears about the illness. Feeling deeply sympathetic, Mary resolved to stand by her friend and cut her own hair to extend support. Over time, however, Mary began noticing things that did not seem to add up. Angela frequently wore a cap, which she was constantly readjusting.

At first, Mary assumed her friend was simply self-conscious because of her treatment. But when she noticed strands of hair peeking out from beneath the cap, she began to have doubts about Angela’s story. Soon, Angela’s boyfriend at the time, Jason Rayburn, told Mary that he believed Angela had been faking her cancer diagnosis. It was Mary who discovered medical tubing in a drawer at the house. Together with Jason and a few other friends, she confronted Angela and told her they knew she had lied about both her profession and her medical condition. Rather than respond to their accusations, Angela walked out of the confrontation, and it turned out to be one of the last times Mary ever spoke to her former friend.
