The Lifetime film ‘Mary J. Blige’s Real Love’ is primarily based on the artist’s 1992 hit song of the same name. It follows the story of Kendra, a young woman who is embarking on a new journey with her first college year at Hammon. She has her sights set on the photography course and is willing to do whatever it takes to pursue her passion. However, life has a way of throwing curveballs in her path, most notably in the form of Ben Baldwin, a dreamy guy who sweeps her off in a whirlwind romance.
Even though the film takes significant departures from Mary J. Blige’s real-life, to the point where its not really a biopic, there are still threads of inspirations between the two. This is most apparent in the Kendra’s emotionally driven storylines and relationships. Therefore, after watching her dynamic with her older sister Sasha on screen, the audience must be curious about Blige’s siblings and their actual lives.
LaTonya Blige-DaCosta is a Loving Mother and Wife
LaTonya Blige-DaCosta is Mary J. Blige’s oldest sister, who has sported a close relationship with the singer from the start. In the early years of Blige’s career, LaTonya even often collaborated on tracks in significant ways. For instance, she provided background vocals for songs like ‘Be Happy’ ‘I’m the Only Woman,’ ‘You Bring Me Joy,’ and more from the singer-songwriter’s 1994 sophomore album ‘My Life.’ Similarly, she also has a variety of credits from things like songwriter to A&R Coordinator on Blige’s album from 2024, ‘Gratitude.’ Furthermore, LaTonya continues to support her younger sister both on social media and in real life. Bruce Miller, Mary J. Blige’s younger half-brother, is another family member who has collaborated with the artist on her music. Most famously, he was a writer on the 2001 hit ‘Family Affairs,’ from the ‘No More Drama’ album, in which he co-penned several other songs. For the same reason, it was a huge moment for him when his older sister performed the track during the 2022 Superbowl Halftime show.
