In season 16 of Fox’s ‘MasterChef: Global Gauntlet,’ amateur home cooks battle their way through high-pressure culinary challenges, hoping to prove their finesse and skills. Throughout the season, they are guided by the renowned personalities and judges: Joe Bastianich, Tiffany Derry, and Gordon Ramsay. Episode 16, titled ‘Keeping Up With Gordon and Tiffany,’ sheds light on how only a few challenges can separate the strongest home cooks from the rest. With the competition down to the final five contestants, they face the Semifinal Challenge — recreating Gordon and Tiffany’s signature dishes in real time. With no room left to fall behind, they are forced to match the judges’ precision, pace, and technique.
The Top 5 Chefs Face Tiffany in the First Round of the High-Stakes Semifinal
The Semifinal kicks off with the arrival of the Top 5 contestants in the MasterChef kitchen. Among them, two cooks are from Team Africa, two from Team Europe, and one from Team Americas. As soon as they see Gordon in a chef’s jacket, they are immediately surprised. When Joe asks the chefs, they quickly point out that they will be facing the Keeping Up With Gordon Challenge. Surprising them further, Tiffany reveals her jacket and announces that, before Gordon, the contestants must face her, turning it into the Keeping Up With Gordon and Tiffany Challenge. Gordon explains that they have to keep up with Tiffany and that the home cook who produces the worst imitation of her signature dish will be eliminated immediately.

After that, the home cooks must face Gordon, and the three contestants who survive that challenge will ultimately advance to the Finale. The judge then reveals that since Jake was the winning team captain in the previous challenge, the chef has earned the final advantage of the season. As an advantage, Jake gets to skip Keeping Up With Tiffany and move straight to Keeping Up With Gordon in the second round. Once the competitor takes his position on the balcony, Tiffany announces that for the first round, she will prepare Pan-Roasted Halibut with red chermoula, fonio, fennel, and orange salad, and garlic sauce. She also adds that once she finishes preparing her dish, the contestants will receive 30 seconds to complete theirs.
Tiffany starts by preparing the fonio and eventually instructs everyone to place it entirely in their pans. However, unlike others, Basia pours only a small amount, prompting Jake to remind her to pour it completely. Despite the reminder, she fails to follow the instructions. When Joe notices it, he remarks that Basia is “freestyling” the dish and doesn’t have enough grain in the pan. Amid the rush, Peter notes that he is trying to block out the noise and distractions. Although he faces a minor hitch when a portion of his ground seeds falls out of the grinder, he quickly salvages the situation as he feels mistakes are bound to happen in the kitchen.
A Series of Costly Mistakes Puts the Contestants Under Pressure
When Basia finally looks at her fonio, she realizes that she hasn’t put enough grains in her pan. With the realization, she quickly pours the rest of the grains. Amid the chaos, Jake quickly advises her to use twice as much chicken stock to cook it properly. Meanwhile, Basia also becomes worried when she notices that Tiffany is several steps ahead of her. When the judge instructs the contestants to put both halibut fillets into the pan, Julia mistakenly begins cooking only one. Shortly after, Tiffany notices smoke arising from Julia’s pan, prompting the judge to inform her that the cook’s pan may be hotter than what the judge intends.

Julia then realizes that she has forgotten to add her second fillet. She promptly puts it in the pan to salvage the situation and admits she has never cooked halibut before. As the focus turns to Heidi, she acknowledges that this is the hardest challenge of the season and that her whole life has prepared her for this moment. As the plating begins, a tiny mishap forces Peter to use a second plate. Once the 30-second countdown concludes, the chefs finally finish plating their dishes. The tasting begins with Peter’s preparation, which earns Tiffany’s compliments for how closely his dish resembles hers. However, she points out that while the fonio is slightly undercooked, it tastes incredible.
Similarly, Gordon and Joe praise Peter’s dish despite some differences from Tiffany’s preparation. During Julia’s turn, Tiffany remarks that her plate looks quite messy and there isn’t enough sear on the fish. Both Tiffany and Gordon point out that although the plating isn’t good, the flavors are incredible. Joe remarks that Julia has done a commendable job in channeling the flavors, but he is disappointed that the presentation isn’t better. Next up is Heidi’s dish, which quickly earns Tiffany’s compliments. However, the judge also mentions that the chermoula needs a little more olive oil. Gordon and Joe also highly praise Heidi’s preparation.
Basia Bids Farewell as the Remaining Four Chefs Face the Second Round
The first-round tasting ends with Basia’s dish. At a glance, Tiffany notes that Basia’s dish bears no resemblance to the judge’s at all, and the fish is undercooked. While Gordon points out the poor fonio ratio, Joe observes that the dish highlights the cook’s lack of organization. After a deep discussion, Gordon announces that Basia is the person leaving the competition after the first round. She admits that she is quite proud of herself because she never thought she would be cooking for the judges. In her exit interview, Basia confesses that although it is hard to leave the MasterChef kitchen, she feels that she has proven to her husband that she is the better cook. She is excited to return home to pursue her culinary dream and open a restaurant.

Without further ado, Gordon announces that only three of the four contestants — Jake, Julia, Peter, and Heidi will advance to the Finale after the second round. For this round, the judge announces that he will prepare Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb with roasted eggplant puree, pea fricassee, pickled turnips, and mint sauce. Gordon then discloses that this time the contestants will have only 15 seconds to complete their dish after the judge finishes preparing his. He begins the preparation by seasoning the lamb and searing it in the pan. As Gordon continues giving instructions, Peter admits that he feels exhausted and anxious. The contestant also states that keeping up with Tiffany consumed a lot of his energy. Tiffany and Joe promptly notice that Peter is gradually falling behind.
In the meantime, Heidi is focused on keeping herself calm because her only goal is to represent South Africa in the Finale. Eventually, Gordon declares that the lamb should be cooked medium rare. However, when Peter takes his lamb out of the oven, he realizes that it is undercooked. Although he becomes concerned, he does not let it cloud his judgment, prompting him to put it inside the oven for another minute. When Joe notices this action, he remarks that Jake has made a smart choice, but hopefully, the lamb will not become overcooked. As time passes, the competitor grows increasingly uneasy. Jake feels that although the other components of his dish are working well, the lamb must be perfect because it is the main protein.
Julia’s Undercooked Lamb Ends Her Journey in the Competition
Once everyone begins plating their dish, Julia grows frantic when the majority of her crust comes off while cutting the rack of lamb. She further grows concerned when she notices that the protein is not cooked properly. As soon as the 15 seconds on the clock begin ticking away, the contestants rush to complete plating their dishes. Soon after, Peter discloses that he has, sadly, put the lamb on the plate the wrong way, while Heidi divulges that she has, unfortunately, failed to put much sauce on her plate. The first competitor to present his dish before the judges is Peter. Gordon quickly notes that although the lamb is beautifully crusted, it’s missing half of its crust. Tiffany and Joe are impressed by the flavors, but Joe doesn’t find the dish aesthetically appealing.

As the judges move on to Julia, Gordon immediately points out that the lamb is undercooked and the plating is not similar to his. However, he praises the perfect execution of the other components of the preparation. While Tiffany states she wishes it had more sauce, Joe also notes that the protein isn’t cooked properly. It is followed by Heidi’s dish, which receives compliments from all the judges. However, they all highlight that her dish could have used more sauce to make it perfect. Lastly, upon seeing Jake’s plating, Gordon observes that it doesn’t look commendable. Yet Gordon is left impressed by the lamb’s perfect cooking and the incredible crust. Likewise, Joe and Tiffany praise the dish’s bold flavors.
The judges then step aside for brief deliberation before Gordon announces that the three chefs advancing to the Finale are Heidi, Jake, and Peter, eliminating Julia from the competition. When questioned, Julia expresses that she is overjoyed to see her fellow contenders reach the Finale. She also reveals that she is grateful to have prepared incredible dishes for the judges. After bidding everyone goodbye, Julia notes that she cannot believe that she has come this far. Moreover, she adds that she came here for her grandmother and has also learned about her talents as a chef. Julia further reveals that she wants to open a bakery one day and thanks ‘MasterChef’ for giving her the courage and confidence to pursue her dreams.
