Season 16 of Fox’s ‘MasterChef: Global Gauntlet’ continues to transform incredible home cooks into kitchen superstars by testing their culinary abilities under pressure. Guided by intense challenges and the judges, Tiffany Derry, Joe Bastianich, and Gordon Ramsay, the contestants must battle for the life-changing grand prize of $250,000. In episode 5, titled ‘Game Day Gourmet,’ the competition officially kicks off as the territories go head-to-head for the first time. Every dish matters, and every mistake is costly, as it can send one of the talented chefs back home.
The Contest Officially Begins as the Chefs Race to Create Stadium-Inspired Dishes
After welcoming the contestants, Gordon wastes no time in announcing that tonight marks the beginning of the tournament. For the first phase of the competition, each chef will cook alongside the members of their territory, each responsible for their own dish. The judges will then test the top dishes from each territory, and the contestant who cooks the best dish of the night will win the MasterChef Immunity Pin. It keeps the winner safe from elimination for this challenge, and they will also save the rest of their territory from elimination tonight. Gordon adds that the judges will test the three worst dishes from the remaining continents and eliminate one home cook. In the spirit of the World Cup, today’s challenge is to make an elevated version of traditional stadium food within 60 minutes.

Tiffany adds that each chef must create a dish that only someone from their culture can cook. As soon as the clock begins ticking, the chefs rush into the pantry to collect their ingredients amid the chaos. However, it doesn’t faze Britny since she is a professional wrestler. Maria is making a famous Brazilian street food that’s served at soccer games, and reveals that her friends often ask her to make it. With 10 minutes already gone, Basia discloses that she is making Polish festival street food, which is often sold before the games. Meanwhile, Gordon arrives at Aghata’s station, where she tells the judge that she often goes to watch soccer games with her friends at the bar or around the stadium. As the focus shifts to Daniel, he recalls attending almost every college football game and always getting the chicken nuggets there.
Hence, Daniel is preparing chicken nuggets and wishes to elevate them by turning them into a Taiwanese popcorn version. Tiffany then approaches Nora, who is making the most widely available sandwich in Morocco. When the judge asks how the chef plans to elevate it, Nora fails to answer but remarks that the dish’s deliciousness will make it better. With just 45 minutes remaining on the clock, the competitor admits that she is worried about the time and feels overwhelmed. Amid the confusion, Nora ends up cutting her fingers, but the medics fortunately bring the situation under control. As 5 more minutes pass, Tiffany arrives at Tkaiya’s station, where the cook is making a Jamaican beef patty. Tkaiya explains that she has chosen this dish because it’s easy to eat at a stadium. She is also confident that she and her team will get the Immunity Pin.
Several Contestants Struggle With Risky Execution Choices as Time Passes
In the meantime, Gordon approaches Aishu and learns that she isn’t cooking any protein because she always thinks about vegetarian food when she speaks about Indian preparations. He then turns his attention to Julia, who reveals that she drew inspiration for her dish from her past job as a Financial Analyst for a professional baseball team. Due to her role, she has spent considerable time at the stadium, which has helped her better understand stadium food. As the last 20 minutes on the clock begin ticking, Gordon informs the other two judges that Aishu isn’t preparing any protein. Meanwhile, Nora calls the medics again for help because her Band-Aid has fallen off. On the panel, Tiffany notes that Nora is making the dish with several traditional components, prompting Joe to wonder how the chef will put everything together.

Gordon also remarks that Nora’s dish seems quite complex. While discussing Julia’s preparation, Joe points out that it will all come down to execution. As the spotlight falls on Julia, she accidentally burns her pancetta. After much consideration, she realizes she cannot restart cooking that component and must salvage the situation. Joe next makes his way to Shompa’s station and learns that she is using a boneless chicken thigh as her protein. Upon inspection, the judge states it will take a while to cook through. When Tiffany approaches Peter, he reveals that he and his family often go to games. One of his best memories is going with his mother to Nigeria vs. American soccer games, so he is infusing his dish with that energy.
When Tiffany asks Peter if he will add proper spice to his dish today, unlike at his audition, he assures the judges they will surely feel the heat this time. Gordon then learns from Jake that the contestant grew up going in and around stadiums because he was in the college marching band. Hence, he is using his favorite dish from there as his inspiration. Upon being asked, Jake tells Gordon he isn’t running behind because he just needs to finish cooking his steak. With just 5 minutes remaining, Gordon tells the other judges that Jake is confused about his preparation and is spending too much time cooking the filet mignon, which can make it overcooked. While discussing Shompa’s chicken breast, the judges note that it will not be cooked properly.
Aishu, Aghata, Peter, and Tkaiya Become the Top Chefs After the Cook-Off
In the final few seconds, the competitors finally finish plating their dishes and adding the finishing touches. After completion, Julia becomes worried that her fries will be soft. Nora also feels overwhelmed by her messy plating, but she’s confident in the flavor of her dish. Following that, the judges take a closer look at each carefully prepared dish to make their choice. Following that, Gordon announces that it is finally time for the judges to highlight the top dish from each territory. From the Asia-Pacific territory, the top dish is prepared by Aishu. She presents her South Indian potato bonda before the judges, and Gordon promptly remarks that it looks elevated. The judges highly praise the dish’s taste, with Joe noting that it has the perfect balance of sweet and savory.

From the European territory, Aghata’s Spanish potato tortilla is selected as the top dish. After a careful look, Joe points out that the proportions of the dish’s components are perfect. Both Gordon and Tiffany compliment the dish highly for its flavor, while Joe adds that it has been elevated in its execution. Gordon then announces that the top dish from the territory of Africa is Peter’s Yaji-spiced chicken tenders, though it is rustic in presentation. Peter tells the judges that when he was a kid, he often went to stadiums with his mother and brother. It turns out that the dish Peter has prepared today is the one they often had during halftime. After tasting his preparation, the judges shower him with multiple compliments. While Tiffany praises the spice, Joe notes it’s the elevated version of a simple dish.
Lastly, the top dish from the Americas is the Jamaican beef patty, prepared by Tkaiya. Tiffany points out that she loves the golden brown color of its crust but hopes there’s enough filling inside. After trying it, Tiffany remarks that the dough is buttery and crisp with incredible flavors inside. While Gordon praises its spice, Joe observes that, although the filling outweighs the crust, he doesn’t mind it because of the fine details. Following the tasting, the judges excuse themselves to deliberate on who prepared the best dish of the night. After an intense conversation, Gordon announces that Aishu, Aghata, Peter, and Tkaiya are all safe from elimination. He then reveals that the chef who earns the incredible Immunity Pin and keeps their territory safe from elimination tonight is Aishu.
A Significant Error Leads the Judges to Eliminate Nora From the Contest
After Aishu, Aghata, Peter, and Tkaiya, and the rest of the contestants from the Asia-Pacific territory take their places on the balcony, Gordon reveals that Aishu will have an amazing advantage in the next challenge. He then tells Shompa that her dish was at the bottom tonight, but she has gotten a lucky escape. It is now time for the judges to taste the worst dishes of the evening. The worst dish from Europe is the loaded crispy polenta fries, prepared by Julia. Joe observes that although he understands the concept, the polenta fries are undercooked, and the pancetta looks burnt. Although Gordon finds the polenta’s flavor delicious, the dish is poorly executed. Lastly, Tiffany points out that there are certain times when the chef needs to start over because they can’t put certain things on the plate.

The next worst dish is Jake’s filet mignon from the Americas. Gordon quickly remarks that the dish isn’t visually appealing and is slightly overcooked, unlike the medium rare the contestant wanted. Despite finding the sauce appetizing, the judge feels Jake overthought the dish. Tiffany explains to the contestant that he needs to put the same amount of time and concentration into the protein as he did for the sauces. Lastly, Joe states that Jake can’t just have big ideas and then fail to execute the details. From the African territory, the judges taste the haddock and maakouda sandwich prepared by Nora. She explains that it is a dish the natives usually take to the stadiums. Gordon expresses his disappointment with the sandwich’s appearance, noting that it’s impractical to eat it as she’s presented it.
Upon tasting it, Gordon finds the dish confusing, and the haddock overcooked. Meanwhile, Tiffany becomes shocked to find a Band-Aid inside the sandwich. Nora insists she lost the last Band-Aid and explains that she thought it had fallen to the floor. The chef apologizes profusely for the mistake, explaining that she had no idea it was inside the food. After deliberation, Gordon announces that the judges have unanimously decided to eliminate Nora because having a Band-Aid inside the dish is unacceptable. In her exit interview, Nora expresses her sadness but admits it’s fair, given the gravity of her mistake. However, she is proud of herself for being one of the Top 20 home cooks in the country.
