Meethe Mein Kya Hai Plot Synopsis

Jai Agarwal, 35, is a renowned interior designer who is grieving the death of his wife, Tara, two years ago in a car accident. He is in a deeply melancholic phase of his life and has planned to leave India and move to Georgia in a couple of weeks. Along with this, he plans to sell the house he and Tara purchased together. Just in time for Diwali, Jai gets a call from his sister, Sana, who shocks him by revealing that she has married Karam without consulting the family. Sana asks Jai to come to Lucknow for the family’s Diwali reunion, so he can be there to support her when she talks about the wedding. Reluctantly, Jai heads to Lucknow on the eve of Diwali, still thinking about Tara every second. Jai’s family includes his mother, Amrita, his father, Ajay, and his maternal grandmother, known only as Nani.

Rishab is Amrita’s brother and has a wife named Preeti and a son named Sid. Nani is deeply fond of everyone, especially Jai. Though the family is in a celebratory mood, Jai’s arrival makes everyone emotional as they all miss Tara too and empathize with Jai’s state of mind. The family also has a guest for Diwali named Meera, a 13-year-old girl from the neighboring house. Meera is staying with Jai’s family as her mother is traveling. Jai learns that Meera lost her father, which makes him feel sympathy for her. When Sana arrives with Karam, the family is initially shocked but welcomes the couple. They are particularly taken aback because Karam is a Sikh, a divorcee, and is already a father to a young girl named Anya.

Though Jai remains supportive of Sana, the rest of the family takes a few hours to settle into the new situation. Karam feels awkward in the house, as almost everyone seems to behave strangely around him. Though everyone in the family wants Jai to move on from Tara’s death, he finds it difficult. He believes that no one can truly understand what he is going through. However, when Meera and Jai become friends and overcome their age gap, they connect through their grief.

Jai views Meera as a younger sister, but Meera still doesn’t know how to perceive Jai. He also helps her write lyrics for a school play she is composing the music for. Jai and Meera both appear more cheerful in each other’s company. The Diwali party, which brings many other guests to the house, proves to be a turning point in Jai’s life. When Meera confesses that she is developing romantic feelings for Jai, he must find a way to reject her without hurting her and also get over Tara’s death.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai Ending: Does Jai Get Over Tara’s Death? Does He Leave India?

Jai’s journey is characterized by grief, loss, and a harrowing sense of uncertainty. After traveling to Lucknow, meeting his family gives Jai some relief, as he has other issues to focus on. Whilst dealing with puzzling familial bonds, his mind still keeps going back to Tara’s death and every ounce of melancholy he has felt since. Meera turns out to be the biggest surprise during Jai’s Lucknow visit. Despite being only 13, Meera understands what Jai is going through on an emotional level. Having seen her own father die, Meera is mature about the various facets of grief and how it affects people in unexpected ways. Getting over Tara’s death proves extremely difficult for Jai, even as he gets involved in family celebrations. The Diwali party and the events that follow have a profound impact on him as he slowly learns to handle his emotions.

During the party, several things that could have gone wrong are handled with unlikely ease by his family. Karam accidentally consumes an excessive number of weed gummies, mistaking them for just sweets. Nani’s sisters look for things worth gossiping about, but aren’t given anything worth spending their time on. Amrita, feeling like she’s being distanced by Sana, ends up drinking a bit too much beyond her limits. However, none of these leads to much trouble. After Tara’s death, Jai spends a lot of time hiding his pain, not reaching out for emotional support. His unlikely friendship with Meera gives him the positive energy he needs to work through his grief. While speaking to a guest who holds a negative view of the seemingly excessive interference of Indian families, Jai realizes that his own family is nothing but supportive.

Although they have their own issues, Jai’s family is with him and ready to support him. He comes to terms with the fact that no one can replace Tara, but he can channel his love for her towards something positive. Having realized how lucky he is to have his whole family supporting him when he needs them most, Jai finally decides to take the next step in his life. During dinner, he also says that Tara would have been really happy to share the table with the family and would also have been curious about the sweets being served. After a family prayer, Jai removes his wedding ring and places it in the prayer room, conveying that he will try to be happy in life again. Although this doesn’t indicate that he is willing to marry again, it shows that he is courageous enough to at least open himself to new possibilities.

Before this point, he refused to remove the ring, as he assumed it was still keeping him connected to Tara’s memory. Having moved on, Jai now makes another important decision, showing he is ready to take on life’s challenges. Throughout his journey, he remains firm in his intention to sell the property he and Tara purchased. Seeing no value in it, he decides to sell it and move to Georgia, leaving India forever. However, after the Diwali celebrations, he calls the real estate agent and tells him that he is no longer interested in selling the property.

Inspired by the house designs he drew at a young age, Jai decides to use the property to build his dream house according to his own designs. He also decides not to travel to Georgia, since he no longer feels the need to spend his days alone. His initial plan to settle down in Georgia was shaped by his immense sense of isolation after Tara’s death. However, he has now settled into his new reality and no longer feels like he has to fly away from his feelings. Ultimately, Jai chooses family, home, love, and hope over grief and surrender.

What Happens to Meera? What Does Jai Tell Her?

Meera develops a close bond with Jai, which eventually leads to strange feelings. She initially considers him a friend and also sees how kind and trustworthy he is. Jai, 35, sees Meera, 13, as a younger sister and an unlikely friend. Unexpectedly, Meera develops a crush on Jai, leading to some complications. Mistaking Jai’s friendly and genuinely kind attitude for romantic feelings, Meera struggles to come to terms with her emotions. Because of how comfortable and safe she feels around Jai, Meera confesses that she has a crush on him. Jai handles the situation maturely, without hurting Meera. He says he understands her feelings, but also tells her that she has yet to live her life. Jai tells her that she has yet to fully realize her musical skills, attend a top music school in the US, live her dreams, and understand what life is.

He also says that by the time Meera has figured out everything she wants from her life, he will be much older than he is now. Without making his rejection seem harsh and ensuring Meera doesn’t feel dejected, Jai helps her realize that they are just friends who understand each other. Although Meera’s tender age makes it difficult for her to process everything, she understands what Jai is telling her. Meera, with some sadness in her heart, goes home after her mother returns from the holiday. Before leaving Lucknow, Jai spots Meera walking alone and has another conversation with her. He says he realizes he probably broke her heart, but also assures her that she will be okay. He tells her that he is not her Prince Charming and that she has a lot more to look forward to in life.

One of the most profound things Jai tells her is that he didn’t save her, and rather, she saved him from despair. Jai says he was lost, but her friendship made him feel better and helped him step out of his grief. Jai also tells her that she will always be welcome at his grandmother’s house and will be treated like a family member. Having ensured that he has handled this complex situation without hurting Meera, Jai leaves Lucknow. Despite how difficult it will be for her to get over Jai, Meera will most likely realize that they are just great friends who bonded over trauma.

Does Amrita Accept Karam? Does Nani Move Out?

Amrita initially finds it difficult to accept that her daughter, Sana, has married Karam, who hails from a different religion. On top of this, Karam is a divorcee and also has a daughter named Anya, which makes Amrita more uncomfortable. Although Amrita eventually overcomes her shock and blesses the union, she still grapples with unresolved feelings about it. On one hand, she knows that Sana is very impulsive, but on the other hand, Amrita also knows that Sana truly loves Karam. The situation also becomes more complicated when Karam overhears a conversation between Amrita and Ajay and misunderstands it. He assumes that Amrita still has a problem with his Sikh religious identity. Due to this, he starts behaving strangely, excessively stressing the point that he is proud to be a Sikh.

During the Diwali party, Amrita ends up drinking excessively, and Karam accidentally consumes one too many weed gummies. With both inebriated, Karam and Amrita have a chance to open up about their feelings. Realizing that they both love Sana and will have important parts to play in her life, Karam and Amrita’s conversation becomes more emotional than expected. They acknowledge that they will be friendly towards each other, and then proceed to hug emotionally. Thus, after much confusion, Amrita truly welcomes Karam as her son-in-law. Nani is often asked by her children to move out of the big Lucknow house, where she stays alone. Rishab and Amrita feel that Nani will be better looked after if she stays with one of them instead.

But Nani is deeply attached to the house, as it is where she spent most of her life with her late husband. Finally, Amrita and Rishab realize that Nani will be truly happy only when she continues to stay in her own house. Before leaving, the entire family makes a pact that they will all gather at the house again next year to celebrate Diwali. Nani is sad to see everyone leave, but also understands that they all have their own lives to lead. The Diwali celebrations truly make everyone form closer bonds, and give Nani a reason to smile.
