As a professional baker whose mentor is none other than Liz Marek, being on Netflix’s ‘Is It Cake? Holiday’ season 2 right alongside her was truly a dream come true for Melissa Alt. It was back in 2018 that she made her competition series debut with ‘Reality Cupcakes,’ only to prove her mettle to such an extent that her career immediately skyrocketed. She has explored various avenues in the cake-making and cake-decorating industry over the years, always remaining at the top of the game thanks to her dedication to her craft.
Melissa Alt Has Been Baking Her Entire Career
A proud native of Teaneck, New Jersey, Melissa Alt reportedly learned how to bake at a relatively young age from watching her loving mother and her kind grandmother in the kitchen. The act of it actually intrigued her from the get-go because of the way it is appropriate for all ages – “Adults can do it by themselves and younger kids can do it with their parents,” she once said. However, it wasn’t until she was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Painting & Sculpture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, that she really delved into it as a side hustle.
Melissa was making custom cakes out of her dorm and her apartment while attending university from 2011 to 2015 to make ends meet, learning every trick she could from online tutorials. Therefore, by the time she graduated, she had realized her true calling wasn’t in the world of pure arts but in creativity through baking confections, driving her to make it her full-time job. In fact, she has been a professional Cake Artist for over a decade as of writing, creating made-to-order cakes of any size for customers based on their specifications and requests.
Melissa has even served as an educator/entrepreneur by offering single lessons or subscriptions to learn how to make new cakes every month with the help of her kits. She had launched the Caking Art Pro Kits in 2020, comprising everything one might need to make six cakes, as she felt that people might need a creative outlet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little did she know it would further help her expand her wings, making her go from an Exclusive Cake Artist for the renowned Dylan’s Candy Bar store in New York City to a Culinary Producer for Food Network’s ‘Reality Bites Cupcakes’ to a Culinary Producer for Roku’s ‘Eye Candy.’
Melissa Alt Continues to Thrive as a Professional Cake Artist
While Melissa is not actively serving as an employee for any show or organization as of writing, she is still a big part of the industry as an independent professional under the name Melissa Alt Cakes. In other words, she continues to craft an array of artistic, custom cakes to this day, all of which are designed with skillful dedication and sculpted with precision based on the clients’ demands. It’s also imperative to note that her work is not only pretty but also decadently delicious and rich because she ensures to find the perfect balance between the ingredients used and the flavor profiles. Hence, her bakes are art, and her art is edible confections in every sense of the term.
Thus, it is not surprising that Melissa has established a name for herself over the years, with her work having been featured in numerous magazines and earning her several awards. In fact, apart from securing the titles of Best Show Cake at the 2017 New York Cake Show and Best Sculpted Cake at the 2019 Jersey Shore Cake Convention, she has even won episode 1 of Food Network’s ‘Hershey’s Meltdown’ (2021). Moreover, most recently, the 30-something-year-old baker based out of New Jersey and New York competed on Netflix’s ‘Is It Cake? Holiday’ season 2 as well as Food Network’s ‘Super Mega Cakes’ (2025). We should mention that she uses only the finest kosher ingredients to create her edible masterpieces, which she can deliver all over the tri-state area and even a little beyond.
Melissa Alt is a Happily Married Dog Mom
On a more personal level, we should mention that Melissa has been married to a bartender/mixologist named Gill Grosman since August 2020, and they share an adorable dog together. They had initially planned to tie the knot in May 2020 but had to postpone it due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so they eventually had a small backyard ceremony surrounded by only their closest loved ones. Neither of them prefers to show off the details of their daily experiences on their social media platforms, yet we do know they lead a comfortable, happy life and like to travel whenever possible. The Chi-Chi brand partner and the mixologist have actually even been to Israel together.
