Michael Harding Murder: Where is Thomas O’Donnell Now?

When Michael “Mike” Harding suddenly disappeared from his lakeside home in Celina, Tennessee, in September 2022, a lot of questions about his personal life arose. That’s because the 53-year-old was living alone when the initial plan was for him and his wife to move into the beautifully expansive four-bedroom mansion upon her retirement. It took officials a while, as explored in CBS’ ’48 Hours: The Mansion Above Dale Hollow Lake,’ but they were eventually able to unravel the truth and bring his assailant to justice.

Michael Harding Was Found Shot to Death a Week After He Went Missing

While few details about Michael “Mike” Harding’s background, early years, or upbringing have ever been made publicly available, we do know he hails from a good family. He even maintained a rather tight-knit relationship with his mother as he came into his own as an adult, served in the Army as well as the Navy, and settled down in California. It was there in Sacramento that he became an entrepreneur and established Around the Clock Heating & Air, through which he offered his services as an HVAC Technician/Repairman.

Mike evolved into an incredibly successful businessman over the years, but his personal experiences weren’t all sunshine and rainbows because his first marriage ended in divorce. He did get two beautiful blessings from it in the form of kids – Heather Cavalieri and Steven Harding – only to later find the woman he believed he’d spend the rest of his life with. His romance with Julie Harding was reportedly a whirlwind, with them purchasing a retirement home along Dale Hollow Lake in Celine, Tennessee, in October 2019 before tying the knot around 2020. However, by the time 2022 rolled around, he’d moved his entire business to the new place he had fallen in love with, whereas his wife continued to reside in California for work.

Julie was a Captain with the California Highway Patrol, so the couple’s plan was to do long-distance until she could relocate to their impressive lakeside home in Tennessee for good after her retirement. What neither she nor Mike expected was for their marriage to crumble from its foundation soon after, resulting in them growing estranged and her filing for divorce in May 2022. It was 4 months later that he was reported missing by his mother after he suddenly went radio silent for over a day, with officials confirming he was last seen on September 19. There was an extensive search, but it was sadly only his remains that were found in a detached cottage on a for-sale 2-acre rural lot in Burkesville, Kentucky, on September 26. The 53-year-old had been shot 4 times at close range, with two bullets hitting his head and two puncturing his torso.

Michael Harding Was Lured to His Death in an Alleged Murder For Hire Scheme

After Mike’s remains were found by people who were actually touring the property hoping to purchase it, they immediately contacted the local police. That’s when the scene was secured, and it was ascertained that he’d been killed right there, leading to the entire area being canvassed. Investigators did find it strange that he was all the way across the border from Tennessee to Kentucky on an empty property, but they got answers as to why soon after. Since the victim’s cell phone was on him, they were able to examine it rather quickly, and it became evident to them that he had been lured to the house. According to records, they learned he had been contacted by a man who claimed to be a realtor named James Fraser, requesting a repair service on the property.

Mike thus made his way out there, where detectives hypothesized he was ambushed and shot to death. Their suspicion that foul play was involved in such a manner only grew when they realized the so-called realtor had used a burner phone to contact him. They tried to trace it, but all they were initially able to uncover was that it was first bought, turned on, accessed, and used in the Houston, Texas, area. As time passed, they also learned that although Mike and Julie were still technically married, they were separated and going through a contentious divorce. In fact, some of the victim’s loved ones even alleged he was afraid of her owing to her career and her behavior in the months preceding.

Officials thus decided to look into her too, determined not to leave any stone unturned, which is when they realized there was much more to the story than they initially believed. After all, not only had Julie withdrawn $222,700 from their shared bank accounts without Mike’s knowledge between March and May 2022, but her call logs in the months leading up to her husband’s disappearance were also strange. She had called a phone number roughly 194 times, with the person on the other end identified as 64-year-old Thomas O’Donnell, a former car salesman from Houston, Texas, who had recently moved to Napa, California. With this connection, the calls, and Julie’s alleged continued strange behavior, investigators hypothesized that she had hired Thomas to kill her husband and then had him relocate to cover his tracks.

Thomas O’Donnell is Currently Incarcerated in a Kentucky Prison

As investigations continued and officials requested Thomas’ cell phone records, it came to light that he was near the crime scene around 4:49 pm on September 19, 2022. Moreover, his personal cell phone and the burner phone were in close proximity in the weeks leading up to the crime, making the case against him go from purely circumstantial to a bit more concrete. On the flip side, after the homicide, Julie started having trouble with her late husband’s new girlfriend as she allegedly trespassed onto the lakeside property. As per records, the girlfriend reported the California Highway Patrol Captain to the Celine police in October 2022, not only for allegedly trespassing but also for allegedly stealing Mike’s dog. Therefore, on December 8, 2022, Julie was arrested on a trespassing charge before being released on bond.

That same day, on December 8, Thomas was taken into custody at the Sacramento International Airport and charged with Mike’s murder. He was eventually extradited to Kentucky, but by that point the matter had grown a lot more serious as his fellow suspect had also passed away. Julie died by suicide on December 10; she was found at the Tennessee home where her late husband had been living. It’s imperative to note that while officials have indicated that her actions suggest guilt and alleged she had hired Thomas to kill Mike, she was never charged, tried, or convicted of any such offense. Thomas, on the other hand, tried to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Mike’s homicide in 2026, but a Kentucky judge denied it.

The plea deal would have resulted in the former salesman receiving a sentence of 22 years in prison for criminal conspiracy to murder and evidence tampering. However, the judge dismissed the agreement, stating he wanted this case to go to trial because it traversed 4 different states and he also wanted to bring the victim true justice. Thomas thus stood trial in April 2026, during which the prosecutors brought up the murder-for-hire theory since Julie was the sole connection between the defendant and the victim. The defense tried to deny all such allegations, but the evidence and the fact that he previously tried to plead guilty to other felony counts did not help. So, on May 1, 2026, he was found guilty on one count of murder, shortly following which he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years. Thomas has since appealed his conviction, but the matter remains ongoing, so today, at the age of 68, he is incarcerated at the Adair County Regional Jail in Columbia, Kentucky.
