Michael Shannon will reportedly be filming his next feature in the Salt City. Principal photography on ‘Love And Squalor,’ a biographical drama based on the relationship between writer/journalist Joyce Maynard and novelist J.D. Salinger, will take place in Syracuse, New York, between September 13 and October 15 this year. Anya Epstein, wife of actor Dan Futterman, wrote the script and will also direct.
The story shows Joyce Maynard reflecting on her turbulent rise to literary fame after a teenage relationship with the reclusive novelist J.D. Salinger (Shannon) changed the course of her life. Moving between childhood memories, personal ambition, heartbreak, and public scrutiny. The actress playing Joyce Maynard has yet to be revealed.
Michael Shannon has of late starred in a wide range of projects, having portrayed a professional Darts player in Daniel Meyer’s sports comedy movie ‘Bulls,’ a US president (James Garfield) in Netflix’s ‘Death by Lightning,’ and an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (Robert H. Jackson) in James Vanderbilt’s biographical drama ‘Nuremberg.’ We also saw him in Joshua Oppenheimer’s musical feature ‘The End’ and Aaron Schimberg’s thriller movie ‘A Different Man.’ We will next see him in the slasher horror movie ‘Buddy,’ which shows a tyrannical humanoid unicorn “going after” the children who don’t listen to it on its children’s television show. It is set for release on August 28, 2026. Shannon’s other upcoming projects include Jonathan Levine’s biographical sports drama ‘Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story,’ Ramin Bahrani’s romantic thriller movie ‘Vegas: A Love Story,’ and Courtney J. Camerota’s dark comedy movie ‘Dead Guy.’
Anya Epstein will be making her feature directorial debut with ‘Love And Squalor.’ She has worked as a writer on shows like HBO’s ‘The Deuce,’ ‘I Know This Much Is True,’ and ‘In Treatment,’ Showtime’s ‘The Affair,’ and Fox’s ‘Gracepoint.’
