Mikayla Matthews and Jace Terry, one of the most steady couples on Hulu’s ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,’ have long appeared strong as a family of five. However, in Season 5, they allowed viewers a closer look at their struggles. The two openly discussed the former challenges they’d been facing, attended couples therapy together, and made a conscious effort to keep communication honest and consistent. Even while acknowledging fears and uncertainties about the future, Mikayla and Jace showed they were committed to putting in the work and facing their issues as a team.
Mikayla Matthews and Jace Terry Took Time Apart to Give Space to Her Mental Health
Mikayla Matthews left home at 15 and moved in with her sister. She went on her first date with Jace Terry at 16, and before they married, she learned she was pregnant. Mikayla has shared that Jace supported her completely during that time and stood by her through every step. They welcomed their first child, Beckham, in July 2017, married in 2018, then expanded their family with their daughter Haven in 2019 and their youngest, Tommie, in 2021. This is how the family of five was introduced in season 1, appearing strong and united through the group’s ups and downs. In season 3, however, Mikayla opened up more deeply about her past, revealing to her friend Mayci Neeley that she had experienced abuse when she was younger and that it had affected intimacy in her marriage.
In therapy, she explained that her trauma had resurfaced over the past six years and created new emotional challenges. Tension rose between her and Jace during the Stagecoach Festival when their plans for a romantic evening fell apart. Jace, in a moment of frustration, even suggested they might need a break, but both continued showing up to therapy. In season 4, the couple continued with therapy, but the problems did not go away in a single day. To better understand themselves, they decided to separate for a while to get some perspective on their issues. She moved into an Airbnb and spent a few months living by herself. In season 5, Mikayla shared that the move had helped their relationship in the long run and that she and Jace were still working on things. She also made hints about being the only one in the group with a husband, which suggested that things between her and Jace had turned a new page. Mikayla said that, with the time apart, she was able to express more of her wants, and it had helped her marriage.
Mikayla and Jace are Still Married to Each Other
Despite hitting a rough patch during season 4, Mikayla and Jace came out stronger. Of course, like any long-term couple, especially one navigating past trauma, young parenthood, and a public platform, they likely still have difficult conversations behind the scenes. Yet they’ve shown a consistent willingness to work through issues together. Jace proudly lists “husband to Mikayla Matthews” in his bio and often shares how grateful he is for her. Despite Mikayla’s decision to move out of the family home, they have remained very much a part of each other’s lives.
In April 2026, the couple took a trip with their four kids to Disneyland, and they went together to Hawaii in May. Mikayla and Jace even took a trip to Germany for his birthday. She gushed about him being the best father and her “favorite person in the world.” Mikayla has also spoken about how Jace is unfamiliar with the trauma of sexual assault and has never had to face it. She said that they are still a “work in progress” but are very much still together. It seems like she has also moved back into the family home and is leaning on therapy to help her in her married life. Mikayla and Jace have faced some of the toughest battles, and it is great to see them emerging stronger from them.

It was a trip made even more special when their close friends Mayci and Jacob Neeley joined them, as they were expecting around the same time. It was a rare chance for both couples to relax, reconnect, and enjoy a peaceful break before welcoming their babies. Now parents of four, Mikayla and Jace certainly have their hands full, but it’s clear they wouldn’t trade this busy, joy-filled season of life for anything else.
