Since Mindi Mebane Kassotis’ loved ones believed she had passed away in a hospital in 2022, they were baffled to learn that her dismembered remains were found in a swamp months later. As explored in CBS’ ’48 Hours: The Woman Who Died Twice,’ they were told the 40-year-old was cremated after she had died from natural causes, but the truth was much, much different. It took authorities a while, but with the help of crucial statements, evidence left behind at the scene, and extensive police work, they were ultimately able to bring her killer to justice.
Mindi Kassotis’ Remains Were Recovered From a Cold, Wet Ditch in a Wooded Area
Born as Mindi Ruth Mebane on February 22, 1982, in Sanford, Florida, to Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Longwell and Frank Noell Mebane III, Mindi was a bright star in her family’s lives. They still remember her as a caring, kind, loving woman whose passion for people and stories had guided her every step of the way, including in her pursuit of a professional career as a writer. They never could have imagined they would lose the Armstrong State University and Virginia Tech University graduate at age 40 in 2022, not long after she had married Nicholas Kassotis.

Mindi and Nicholas reportedly had a cozy romance before they happily tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on October 9, 2016, following which they settled in Alexandria, Virginia. However, by the early 2020s, the couple had joyously decided to relocate to Savannah, Georgia, for good, with him soon also adopting an alias, Nicholas “Nick” Killian James Stark. According to records, he was a former Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) officer in the Navy and had also served in the Navy Reserve at the Region Legal Service Office in Washington, DC, from 2017 to 2019.
Therefore, nobody doubted Nicholas when he claimed he and Mindi were living in pure fear of a mysterious man who he believed had been stalking them for at least a few years. The couple was allegedly moving every so often to keep matters under control, but everything changed in late 2022 when the 40-year-old was hospitalized, as per her husband. On December 1, her loved ones were informed that she had died of natural causes from a sudden medical issue, but a mere day later, her dismembered remains were found. A couple of local hunters had discovered her in a swamp in a densely wooded area in Riceboro, but it took until May 11, 2023, for her to be positively identified.
Mindi Kassotis Was Killed by the Man She Arguably Trusted the Most
When authorities arrived at the scene, the substantial physical evidence nearby had them face the grisly reality that a woman had been heinously killed, dismembered, and disposed of. Thus, they began a homicide investigation, taking extra care while recovering the remains, along with the bag of clothes, trash, tote bag, and knife strewn around in the area close to it. That’s how they were eventually able to identify the victim as Mindi, which gave way to in-depth inquiries about her life, career, and personal relationships, as well as the questioning of her loved ones.

It was then that officials learned Mindi had never been reported missing because those dear to her had been told she had died in a local hospital on December 1, 2022, and then cremated. When they confronted Nicholas because he had been the one to relay the information, he maintained his standing by claiming his wife had been hospitalized for 3 days before her death. He alleged he hadn’t visited during her time there in fear of their stalker following him, but when he ultimately did, he claimed he was prevented from seeing her as she had already passed away.
According to Nicholas’ accounts, a man by the name of Jim McIntyre had been stalking and harassing the couple over the past few years, allegedly owing to his background in the military. However, none of his claims could be verified in any capacity, driving investigators to arrest him a mere day after Mindi’s remains were positively identified – he was arrested on May 12, 2023. He was eventually charged with a total of 12 counts, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and removal of body parts or dismemberment.
Nicholas Kassotis is Currently Serving a Life Term in State Prison
Nicholas was actually apprehended from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he had moved with his third wife, Samantha Kolesnik — they had tied the knot 4 months after Mindi’s murder. He was later extradited to Georgia, where further investigations unraveled additional details that incriminated him. As per records, when he was courting his new partner after initially coming across her online, he had allegedly lied and told her that he had lost his wife as well as his child over two years ago. The fact that detectives couldn’t verify any details about the allegedly ominous Jim McIntyre or Mindi ever being admitted to a local hospital for any ailment didn’t help his case either.

It then came to light that Nicholas’ first wife was awarded around $1.5 million in a final divorce judgment mere months before Mindi’s murder, so authorities believe he went on the run to avoid paying the money. They also hypothesized that this could have potentially played a role in his crimes against his second wife of over 6 years in late 2022, for which he went on trial in August 2025. In the end, on August 14, after detailed testimonies, evidence presentation, and an hour of jury deliberations, he was found guilty as charged and later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. So, today, at the age of 44, he is incarcerated at the medium-security Autry State Prison in Pelham, Georgia, where he is expected to remain for the rest of his natural life.
