Do Zac and Alicia End Up Together in Motorheads?

Prime Video’s ‘Motorheads‘ centers on automobiles and streetcar racing through the eyes of a group of outcast kids in a once-thriving Rust Belt town known as Ironwood, Pennsylvania. While the show largely dwells on the racing aspects, a huge portion of the narrative also revolves around high school drama, including romantic entanglements that breed more complex interpersonal relationships between our main characters. One such bond explored within the inaugural season is the relationship between Zac and Alicia, who find themselves in each other’s orbits despite numerous obstacles standing in their way. With so much at stake, the two characters must navigate the challenges in their past, present, and future as they look to forge a stronger unity that unseen forces may challenge. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Zac and Alicia’s Feelings are Initially Curbed By Harris’ Presence

Although it takes a while for their romantic feelings to become mutual, Zac and Alicia’s love story kicks into gear at the start of ‘Motorheads.’ During his first day at Ironwood High School, Zac runs into Alicia in the locker room, a direct result of them sharing adjacent lockers. While Zac is immediately interested in her, Marcel informs him that his plans for getting close to her may be misguided because she is already dating Harris Bowers, the school’s popular kid and the son of a wealthy businessman. To make matters complicated, Zac also learns that Alicia is the daughter of Bruce Whitaker, the CEO of Bandit Technology, a high-end company with a lot of influence in the locality. Therefore, Alicia’s entire social circle is full of affluent folk, which is in sharp contrast with someone like Zac, who comes from more modest means.

Despite realizing that there is a stark class difference between him and Alicia, Zac does not give up hope on learning more about her. He uses every opportunity and every play in the book to spend time with her when he can, including showing up at her party in the opening parts of the show. While his resolve may be commendable, it does get him blacklisted by Harris, who considers his interest in Alicia as a threat to his own relationship with his girlfriend. He repeatedly tries to make it clear that Zac should steer clear of her lest he attract his ire and the anger of his staunch supporters. However, Zac is least concerned about Harris’ threats and instead uses them as fuel to further his motivations to beat him in a race sometime in the future. Dating Alicia is an added incentive to that challenge.

While Zac’s methods may seem crude from the outside, it eventually becomes clear that Harris neglects Alicia repeatedly. To that end, Zac is willing to step in and be a more wholesome presence in her life, even though they start off as friends. He tries to show his better nature to her, which eventually pays off because she realizes what she is missing in her own relationship with Harris. By the end, she dumps Harris and becomes closer to Zac, much to her former boyfriend’s chagrin. However, the subject has an air of inevitability as Alicia feels more in tune with Zac’s positive energy than Harris’ constant obsession with personal glory, fame, and legacy. To that end, Zac and Alicia feel like a perfect fit in the grander context of the narrative.

The Challenges Awaiting Zac and Alicia in the Future

One of the big hurdles in Zac and Alicia’s bond arises near the final parts of the inaugural season. After receiving word that his uncle Logan is in a bind and being blackmailed by Hugo, Zac has to decide to help him by providing the security codes to the private car collection room owned by Bruce Whitaker, Alicia’s dad. Although Zac is reluctant, he hands the code to Logan, which the latter relays to Huge. Subsequently, the cars are stolen from the secure spot, leaving Bruce and Alicia to wonder how anyone got their hands on the security details. The latter suspects Zac may have been involved, especially because she showed him the room during an earlier visit to her house. Thus, their relationship could be jeopardized if Alicia confirms that Zac betrayed her trust.

At the end of the season, Zac accepts Harris’ challenge for a race, using it as an opportunity to wheel out his dad’s restored car. Unfortunately, the race goes awry when Harris’ car careens off the road and bursts into flames, leaving the boy’s fate hanging in the balance. To that end, Zac’s actions directly or indirectly led to two cataclysmic events that could redefine the story’s path in a potential future season. For instance, if Harris dies, Zac is going to be blamed for having a role in the incident that led to his rival’s demise. Additionally, given Alicia’s close ties with her former boyfriend, she will likely be alarmed that he lost his life because of Zac. This will only further exacerbate their differences if she already establishes he played a role in the robbery of her father’s prized cars. As such, a lot of drama is left to unfold in the duo’s relationship moving forward.
