Directed by Sam Hargrave, Apple TV’s ‘Matchbox The Movie’ is an action comedy film inspired by Mattel’s Matchbox toy brand. Nearly three decades after spending childhood with his friends, Sean Walker (John Cena), a spy and former soldier, returns to his hometown following the death of Smalley (Bill Camp), the mechanic who introduced him and his buddies to Matchbox cars in the 90s. His reunion with Aimee (Jessica Biel), Ted (Arturo Castro), Charmaine (Teyonah Parris), and Crosby (Sam Richardson) takes a dangerous turn when CIA agent Mosier (Corey Stoll) kidnaps them, believing Sean is responsible for the disappearance of a nuclear warhead.
Sean escapes with his friends and turns to Helen (Danai Gurira), his former CIA contact, for help. With the agency framing them for the theft, the group sets out to recover the weapon and clear their names. Although most of them have little experience as spies, the childhood friends must work together to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. These movies, similar to ‘Matchbox The Movie,’ feature high-level stakes, group dynamics, humor, wild characters, intense action sequences, and more.
8. Bad Boys for Life (2020)

‘Bad Boys for Life’ chronicles a violent campaign of revenge that pulls Miami detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) into a dangerous investigation. The action comedy film picks up with a series of murders linked to Mike’s troubled past. Behind the attacks are the wife and son of a Mexican drug lord, who target those responsible for his imprisonment. When Mike is wounded, he and Marcus join an elite Miami Police Department tactical unit to pursue the ruthless cartel leader Armando Aretas (Jacob Scipio). But adapting to a younger team proves challenging for the veteran partners, who are already dealing with career changes and midlife concerns.
To stop the killings and survive the hunt, the old-school detectives must learn to work with their new counterparts. Helmed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, it is the third installment in the ‘Bad Boys’ franchise and a sequel to ‘Bad Boys II.’ Sean’s connection to the missing warhead puts him and his friends in the CIA’s crosshairs in ‘Matchbox The Movie,’ while Mike’s troubled past makes him a target, turning a dangerous mission into a personal fight for survival.
7. Red Notice (2021)

A global hunt for priceless artifacts turns into a game of shifting alliances in ‘Red Notice,’ an action comedy film written and brought to life by Rawson Marshall Thurber. When an international warrant is issued for the world’s most wanted art thief, FBI profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) takes charge of the pursuit and targets notorious thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds). Their encounter leads to an unlikely partnership after Hartley is framed, leaving him dependent on the very criminal he was chasing.
To clear his name and stay ahead of their rivals, the two set out to secure three legendary jeweled eggs before the elusive art thief known as the Bishop (Gal Gadot) can claim them. Their journey spans multiple countries and dangerous heists, forcing Hartley and Booth to cooperate despite their mutual suspicion. Sean in ‘Matchbox The Movie’ and Hartley in ‘Red Notice’ are skilled operatives pulled into high-stakes international missions, forcing them to adapt when events spiral beyond their control.
6. 6 Underground (2019)

In ‘6 Underground,’ a wealthy man’s decision to fake his own death leads to the creation of a covert team tasked with taking down powerful criminals. Haunted by the brutality he witnessed in Turgistan, billionaire Magnet S. Johnson (Ryan Reynolds), AKA One, uses his fortune to recruit five specialists who abandon their identities and become covert ghost operatives. The group includes CIA agent Two (Mélanie Laurent), hitman Three (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), parkour expert Four (Ben Hardy), doctor Five (Adria Arjona), and driver Six (Dave Franco).
Later joined by soldier Seven (Corey Hawkins), the team sets its sights on a ruthless dictator whose removal could allow his more benevolent brother to take power. Operating outside conventional systems of justice, the team members must combine their specialized skills to confront a regime that is becoming more dangerous every day. Crafted under Michael Bay’s direction, the action film reflects the essence of ‘Matchbox The Movie’ by placing a group in unfamiliar territory. Sean recruits his childhood friends for an unexpected mission, while One assembles a team of specialists, bringing people with different abilities together to pursue a common objective.
5. Fast Five (2011)

Justin Lin steers ‘Fast Five’ or ‘Fast & Furious 5,’ an action film that serves as the fifth installment in the ‘Fast & Furious’ movie franchise. After helping Dominic Toretto, AKA Dom (Vin Diesel), escape custody, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) flee to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where they plan one final heist to secure their freedom. Bringing together a team of skilled racers, Dom and Brian prepare to rob a powerful and corrupt Rio businessman who wants them dead. However, they also have to evade federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), who arrives with a team determined to capture them.
As Hobbs pursues the fugitives across Brazil, he begins to realize that the situation is more complicated than it first appears. With danger closing in from multiple sides, Dom and Brian must pull off their plan before their enemies catch up with them. Akin to ‘Matchbox The Movie,’ the narrative brings together a group of people with different abilities to tackle missions they cannot manage alone. The action sequences and chaotic group dynamics also connect the movies visually.
4. The A-Team (2010)

‘The A-Team’ follows four highly skilled Army Rangers, John Smith, AKA Hannibal (Liam Neeson), Templeton Peck, AKA Face (Bradley Cooper), Bosco Baracus, AKA B.A. (Quinton Jackson), and H.M. Murdock, AKA Howling Mad (Sharlto Copley). Their successful military careers come to an abrupt end after a mission in Iraq goes wrong. Recruited by CIA agent Lynch (Patrick Wilson) to recover stolen US currency printing plates linked to a billion dollars in counterfeit money, the team completes the assignment only to discover that they have been framed. With their commanding officer dead, the plates missing, and their reputations ruined, the four men are court-martialed and imprisoned separately.
Six months later, Hannibal escapes with help from Lynch and reunites with his former teammates to track down the stolen plates and clear their names. However, their pursuit becomes complicated when Captain Charissa Sosa (Jessica Biel), a military intelligence officer with a history with Face, begins hunting them, while the team starts questioning Lynch’s true intentions. ‘The A-Team’ and ‘Matchbox The Movie’ bring together groups whose shared experiences and personal bonds become crucial when they find themselves in life-threatening situations. Hannibal and Sean Walker are skilled operatives who take charge when a dangerous mission demands quick thinking and decisive action.
3. Knight and Day (2010)

‘Knight and Day,’ crafted under James Mangold’s direction, is an action comedy film that throws an ordinary woman into a dangerous world of international espionage. June Havens (Cameron Diaz) is a woman who loves classic cars, is afraid of love, and boards a flight to Boston to attend her sister April’s wedding. She meets Roy Miller (Tom Cruise), a charming stranger whose mysterious profession soon upends her life. Roy reveals that he is a covert operative who has been framed, leaving June caught between dangerous enemies and a man she barely knows.
From chases in Boston to rooftop escapes in Austria, the pair struggles to stay alive while pursuing a powerful device worth millions. While their adventure grows increasingly perilous, June must figure out whether Roy is someone she can trust and possibly love. Roy Miller’s experience as a covert agent in ‘Knight and Day’ is comparable to Sean Walker’s background as a spy and former soldier in ‘Matchbox The Movie,’ with both men navigating threats that their companions struggle to understand.
2. The Family Plan (2023)

Simon Cellan Jones steers ‘The Family Plan,’ the tale of Dan Morgan (Mark Wahlberg), who appears to have everything figured out as a husband, father of three, and successful car salesman in suburban America. However, his ordinary existence conceals a past as an elite government operative who eliminated dangerous targets. When unexpected threats linked to his past arise, Dan, his wife, Jessica (Michelle Monaghan), and their kids take a road trip to Las Vegas to escape. As he attempts to protect them while turning the journey into a memorable vacation, Dan must revive his lethal skills without letting his family discover who he really is. The action comedy film, along the lines of ‘Matchbox The Movie,’ features hilarious group dynamics, adrenaline, skills, missions, and a breezy visual aesthetic.
