Brought to life by Jennifer Peedom, Apple TV’s ‘Tenzing’ is a biographical film that dramatizes the life of Himalayan climber Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), who joins New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston) on a historic expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Growing up on the Tibetan Plateau, Tenzing develops a deep spiritual connection to Chomolungma, the mountain known to the world as Everest. Despite his climbing experience, he faces the challenge of being recognized as a mountaineer in his own right rather than merely a member of the Sherpa team supporting Western climbers. With encouragement from his wife, Dawa (Thinley Lhamo), and support from expedition secretary Jill Henderson (Caitríona Balfe), Tenzing pushes for a place on the British expedition led by Colonel John Hunt (Willem Dafoe).
Once the climb begins, he forms a close bond with Hillary, and the two work together to overcome the mountain’s dangers. Their journey is shaped by differences in background, social standing, and their understanding of Everest. While others view the ascent as a conquest, Tenzing sees it as a spiritual journey. While the climbers approach their goal, mutual trust becomes essential to their success, bringing Tenzing closer to fulfilling a lifelong dream and honoring his connection to the sacred mountain. These movies, similar to ‘Tenzing,’ explore inspirational stories of tenacity and the wonders of the human spirit that will engage you.
8. North Face (2008)

‘North Face’ or ‘Nordwand’ picks up when the Nazi regime encourages climbers to conquer the Eiger mountain’s dangerous north face, prompting German mountaineers Toni Kurz (Benno Fürmann) and Andreas Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas) to leave the army to take part in the challenge. Determined to reach the summit, the friends begin their perilous ascent of the unclimbed route. Their attempt also draws the attention of Luise Fellner (Johanna Wokalek), a secretary at a Berlin newspaper who knows the two climbers personally and is assigned to report on the expedition.
While she documents their progress, the climb becomes a test of endurance against one of the Alps’ most dangerous rock faces, with the climbers risking their lives to achieve their goal. Helmed by Philipp Stölzl, the German historical survival drama film is a dramatization of the 1936 Eiger climbing disaster. Toni Kurz and Andreas Hinterstoisser in ‘North Face’ share a strong partnership as they pursue a dangerous climbing goal, much like Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in ‘Tenzing,’ who also face perilous threats.
7. Nanga Parbat (2010)

Directed by Joseph Vilsmaier, ‘Nanga Parbat’ is a German biographical drama film that dramatizes real events from a 1970 mountaineering expedition. Mountaineering brothers Reinhold Messner (Florian Stetter) and Günther Messner (Andreas Tobias) set out to conquer Nanga Parbat, one of the world’s tallest mountains, but their journey ends in tragedy when Günther dies during the expedition. Based on Reinhold’s recollections, the narrative goes beyond recreating the events to present his account of the climb and its aftermath. The unforgiving conditions, including blizzards, exhaustion, and physical hardship, highlight the dangers the brothers face.
Reinhold’s passion for mountaineering, his pursuit of freedom, and his conflict with expedition leader Karl Herrligkoffer (Karl Markovics) also shape the story, offering a portrait of ambition and loss. Reinhold and Günther’s passion for mountaineering and their pursuit of freedom drive their journey in ‘Nanga Parbat,’ while Tenzing seeks recognition as a climber in his own right and hopes to fulfill his lifelong dream. The stories similarly explore the personal ambitions that lead characters to undertake demanding expeditions.
6. Broad Peak (2022)

‘Broad Peak’ is based on true events and revolves around mountaineer Maciej Berbeka (Ireneusz Czop), whose failed attempt to reach Broad Peak’s summit continues to haunt him for nearly 25 years. However, another ascent brings its own challenges, as his age and the need to convince his family complicate his decision. Despite the risks, he sets out to confront his past and complete the climb that has remained an obsession for decades. The Polish drama film by director Leszek Dawid, akin to ‘Tenzing,’ explores the uncertainty of fate, the personal cost of pursuing a long-held ambition, and the ways nature tests people.
5. The Summit of the Gods (2021)

With Patrick Imbert in the director’s seat, ‘The Summit of the Gods’ or ‘Le sommet des dieux’ is a French animated drama film based on the eponymous manga series written and illustrated by Jiro Taniguchi. It centers on Japanese photojournalist Makoto Fukamachi as he investigates a mystery surrounding Mount Everest. His search takes an unexpected turn when he encounters elusive climber Habu Joji and discovers a camera that may have belonged to George Mallory, who disappeared on Everest in 1924.
Along with this, Fukamachi must determine whether George Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, actually reached the summit. Before Fukamachi can examine the camera’s film, a stranger steals it, drawing him deeper into the mystery. Determined to uncover the truth, he explores the stories and legends surrounding mountaineers in pursuit of answers. Along the lines of ‘Tenzing,’ the film explores curiosity, beauty, and the legacy of those who risk everything to climb the world’s highest peaks against all odds.

Helmed by Rahul Bose and Prashant Pandey, ‘Poorna’ is an Indian biographical film that tells the story of Poorna Malavath (Aditi Inamdar), a young girl from a tribal family in Telangana. With approval to join Operation Everest, she prepares for the mission through exhausting treks in Ladakh and Darjeeling. Accompanied by fellow mountaineer Sandhanapalli Anand Kumar (Manoj Kumar), Poorna takes on the formidable challenge of climbing Mount Everest.
At just 13, she takes on a grueling task that has tested several experienced climbers before her, hoping to defy the odds and prove herself. The Hindi-language movie captures the essence of ‘Tenzing’ by portraying a character’s rise from humble beginnings to greater ambitions. The films portray mountaineering as a deeply meaningful journey rather than simply a physical test.

As demand for his expertise grows, Rob takes eight climbers and three guides toward the world’s highest peak. However, their journey takes a dangerous turn when a severe blizzard strikes in May 1996. Faced with extreme conditions, Rob’s team must cooperate with another group led by Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) to survive. 2. The Climbers (2019)

Director Daniel Lee’s ‘The Climbers’ or ‘Pan deng zhe’ is a Chinese adventure drama based on the true story of two generations of mountaineers who attempt to scale Mount Everest from its dangerous northern side. In 1960, a Chinese climbing team led by Fang Wuzhou (Wu Jing) takes on this perilous task against the odds. The team reaches the summit after several difficult attempts, but their achievement is called into question because they lack photographic evidence. Fifteen years later, Fang Wuzhou and Qu Songlin (Zhang Yi) prepare for another expedition to prove their earlier accomplishment.
With help from meteorologist Xu Ying (Zhang Ziyi), they lead a younger team toward the summit. However, the climbers must confront harsh weather, exhausting terrain, and life-threatening challenges as they attempt to repeat their historic 1960 achievement and establish the legitimacy of their earlier ascent. Fang Wuzhou and Qu Songlin in ‘The Climbers’ share a determination to prove their mountaineering abilities, much like Tenzing Norgay in ‘Tenzing’ hopes to establish himself as a climber in his own right. Both stories follow experienced mountaineers whose ambitions are closely connected to earning recognition for their achievements.
1. Beyond the Edge (2013)

‘Beyond the Edge’ is a New Zealand docudrama written and directed by Leanne Pooley that recounts the historic 1953 Mount Everest expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. At more than 29,000 feet, Everest presents a formidable challenge, with previous expeditions claiming the lives of 13 climbers. Hillary, a New Zealand beekeeper and mountaineer, joins Tenzing, an experienced Sherpa from Nepal, to attempt the ascent. Battling treacherous winds, freezing temperatures, and altitude sickness, the two climbers push through the mountain’s harsh conditions to reach the summit. The film combines dramatized recreations filmed on Everest and in New Zealand with archival photographs, footage, and audio recordings, bringing their remarkable achievement to life and capturing an expedition that became a defining moment in mountaineering history.
‘Beyond the Edge’ and ‘Tenzing’ both recount the historic 1953 Mount Everest expedition undertaken by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. While ‘Tenzing’ focuses on Tenzing’s personal journey and his struggle to gain recognition as a mountaineer, ‘Beyond the Edge’ dramatizes the expedition and the challenges the climbers face together.
