‘The Dog Stars’ is set in a world where most of humanity has been wiped out due to a deadly flu pandemic, leaving survivors to fend for themselves against a harsh landscape. Unable to ignore the possibility of finding a safer place, Hig takes to the skies and follows the signal, leaving behind the security of his home in search of answers. However, the ensuing threats make survival a battle against the odds and dangerous forces. Directed by Ridley Scott, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Heller. 9. A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
‘A Quiet Place Part II’ is a sequel to ‘A Quiet Place’ that explores the Abbott family after the devastating events that forced them to live in silence. Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) is left to protect her children, Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe), along with her newborn son, as they leave their home and venture into the dangerous outside world. The family knows the alien creatures hunting humans by sound have a fatal weakness, but escaping them is only part of the problem. As they search for other survivors and a possible new place to live, they discover that the creatures are not the only danger waiting beyond their familiar surroundings.
With threats appearing everywhere and no safe place to hide, the Abbotts must rely on what they have learned as they try to find a future beyond the isolated life they once knew. Written and brought to life by John Krasinski, the horror film tests the morality, love, loyalty, and purpose of its characters, similar to ‘The Dog Stars.’ Fates hang in the balance when the Abbotts leave their home to look for other survivors. Meanwhile, Hig leaves the airport after the mysterious radio transmission suggests something may exist beyond his protected surroundings.

The narratives depict the journeys of characters who venture into the unknown, risking everything in search of meaning and hope.
5. Cargo (2017)
‘Cargo’ centers on Andy (Martin Freeman), who is trying to keep his wife Kay (Susie Porter) and their baby daughter Rosie safe as a zombie epidemic tears through Australia. The family initially shelters on a boat, avoiding the infected. Their situation changes when Kay is bitten, and a desperate attempt to reach safety ends with Andy becoming infected as well. Knowing he has very little time before the virus takes over, Andy is left with the urgent task of finding someone to protect Rosie after he is gone. Stranded in the wilderness with the infection taking hold, he travels through a dangerous landscape.
His fight is no longer simply about surviving the outbreak, but making sure Rosie survives without him. The Australian thriller film is based on the eponymous short film by Yolanda Ramke, who co-directed the movie with Ben Howling. While ‘Cargo’ adds deeply personal stakes in a post-apocalyptic setting as Andy races against his own infection, ‘The Dog Stars’ is also a personal tale that explores how survival affects relationships, particularly through Hig’s longing for something beyond isolation.
4. The Road (2009)

With almost no human contact left, Neville must decide how much he is willing to risk for humanity’s future. Helmed by Francis Lawrence, the action horror thriller film is loosely based on Richard Matheson’s eponymous novel. While Neville faces infected humans who hunt him after dark, Hig and Bangley in ‘The Dog Stars’ must defend themselves against the Reapers. Both stories explore the meaning of life and portray the remaining inhabitants of a ruined world as a constant threat to the main characters, who hope to overcome impossible odds.
2. Light of My Life (2019)
Directed and penned by Casey Affleck, ‘Light of My Life’ is a drama film that introduces Dad (Casey Affleck) and his daughter Rag (Anna Pniowsky), who have spent years hiding from the dangerous world left behind by a devastating pandemic. The outbreak has wiped out most of the female population, making Rag’s survival especially dangerous. To keep her identity hidden, Dad disguises her as a boy while the two move through the outskirts of society in British Columbia. Their quiet existence is built around staying unnoticed and avoiding people who could threaten Rag. But as they encounter more of the world, Dad is forced to confront how dangerous the surviving population has become.
Determined to protect his daughter at all costs, he tries to preserve her innocence while teaching her to survive. Their journey ultimately tests both their bond and their faith in humanity. ‘Light of My Life’ and ‘The Dog Stars’ both explore the aftermath of a pandemic that has drastically reduced the human population. Dad’s journey is driven almost entirely by his need to keep Rag safe, whereas Hig’s hopeful nature gives emotional weight to his struggle for survival.

Brought to life by Stephen Fingleton, ‘The Survivalist’ narrates the story of the Survivalist (Martin McCann), who has built a secluded life in the woods after a catastrophic population collapse leaves the world struggling with starvation. Living alone in a hidden cabin, he grows his own food, hunts, and protects his small piece of land with traps and alarms. His carefully controlled routine is disrupted when Kathryn (Olwen Fouéré) and her daughter, Milja (Mia Goth), arrive seeking food and shelter. Suspicious of the strangers but aware that they may be useful to him, the Survivalist agrees to let them stay in exchange for supplies and companionship. What begins as a practical arrangement gradually becomes more complicated as trust, desire, and fear begin to interfere.
With resources dwindling and strangers becoming increasingly difficult to understand, the man’s isolated existence begins to unravel. The British sci-fi thriller film features a man who creates an isolated refuge after civilization collapses, much like ‘The Dog Stars.’ The Survivalist has his woodland cabin, while Hig turns an abandoned airport into a heavily protected home. The two films ask whether complete isolation is really enough and if the desire for connection is essential to human nature.
