Directed by Kevin Macdonald, Prime Video’s ‘The Runner’ is a British action thriller film that follows Maia Marten (Gal Gadot). She is a successful London lawyer and devoted mother whose ordinary morning takes a terrifying turn when she receives a call from her son Noah’s (Rory Wilmot) phone. A mysterious man tells her that he has kidnapped Noah and gives her strict instructions to follow if she wants him returned alive. Maia must keep running through London, obey every command, and tell no one about the abduction. The situation becomes even more disturbing when she is ordered to kill a witness who is preparing to testify against the kidnapper’s employer.
With Noah’s life hanging in the balance, Maia is forced to navigate a series of increasingly dangerous demands while trying to understand the motive behind them. When the pressure mounts and her options seem to disappear, Maia must decide how far she is willing to go to save her son from a terrible fate. ‘Proof of Life’ deals with Peter Bowman (David Morse), an American engineer working in the country of Tecala, who is abducted by the Liberation Army of Tecala while traveling to work. While Terry works to secure Peter’s freedom, the situation becomes difficult, with everyone involved needing constant proof that Peter is still alive. Alice is forced to navigate the uncertainty surrounding her husband’s fate, as Terry attempts to keep negotiations alive.
The longer Peter remains captive, the greater the pressure becomes on those trying to bring him home. Helmed by Taylor Hackford, the action thriller film is inspired by the magazine article ‘Adventures in the Ransom Trade’ by William Prochnau and Thomas Hargrove’s book ‘Long March to Freedom.’ Both ‘The Runner’ and ‘Proof of Life’ follow characters who are forced to navigate an increasingly dangerous situation after someone close to them is abducted, with the pressure of the kidnapper constantly shaping their decisions in unexpected ways.
11. Gone Baby Gone (2007)
In ‘Gone Baby Gone,’ private detectives and romantic partners Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan) are brought into a difficult investigation after four-year-old Amanda McCready disappears from her Boston home. The search for the missing child soon becomes far more complicated as Patrick and Angie uncover connections involving Amanda’s mother and her involvement in drugs and stolen money. Their investigation takes them through a dangerous world of criminals while they work alongside law enforcement and also cross paths with Captain Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman).
Patrick and Angie are forced to confront a deeply troubling question about how far they should go to protect a child and whether doing what seems right can justify the means used to achieve it. Brought to life by Ben Affleck, the crime drama film is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s eponymous novel. ‘The Runner’ and ‘Gone Baby Gone’ turn a child’s disappearance into a larger mystery, with the narratives revealing that the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping are more complicated than they initially appear.
10. The Captive (2014)
‘The Captive’ is a thriller film that centers on Matthew Lane (Ryan Reynolds), whose young daughter Cassandra Lane (Peyton Kennedy) vanishes during a brief stop at a roadside shop. Her disappearance leaves Matthew and his wife Tina Lane (Mireille Enos) devastated. The Atom Egoyan directorial, much like ‘The Runner,’ places a parent’s desperate search at the heart of the story. Maia is forced into action when Noah is kidnapped, while Matthew spends years refusing to give up on finding Cassandra.
9. The Missing (2003)
Crafted under Ron Howard’s direction, ‘The Missing’ is a Western film based on Thomas Eidson’s novel The Last Ride. It revolves around Maggie Gilkeson (Cate Blanchett), a rancher whose life is thrown into chaos when her daughter Lily Gilkeson (Evan Rachel Wood) is abducted by Apache rebels. Without any hope, Maggie unexpectedly turns to her estranged father, Samuel Jones (Tommy Lee Jones), an experienced tracker, despite her resentment toward him.
Their pursuit becomes increasingly urgent as they learn that the kidnapped girls are being taken toward the Mexican border, where they face the threat of being sold into sex work. Maggie and Samuel must put their painful history aside and work together if they are to reach Lily before she is taken beyond their reach. 8. Hostage (2005)
Based on the novel of the same name by Robert Crais, ‘Hostage’ is the tale of Jeff Talley (Bruce Willis), a former hostage negotiator who has abandoned his old career. His situation becomes even more complicated when the criminals demand that he retrieve a mysterious file, leaving Jeff with little choice but to follow their instructions while attempting to find a way to save everyone involved. The action thriller film by director Florent-Emilio Siri explores the consequences of one’s professional life and how it intertwines with personal matters. Maia is drawn into a dangerous situation as a lawyer, while Jeff’s experience as a former hostage negotiator becomes essential when the crisis begins.
7. Along Came a Spider (2001)
Adapted from James Patterson’s eponymous novel and directed by Lee Tamahori, ‘Along Came a Spider’ is the story of Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman). He is brought back into the world he had deliberately left behind as a detective and forensic psychologist. The disappearance of Megan Rose (Mika Boorem), the daughter of a US senator, forces Alex back into action. What initially appears to be a straightforward kidnapping soon becomes puzzling when the perpetrator establishes contact with Cross and leaves clues specifically for him to decipher.
The investigation becomes a race to understand what the kidnapper is really trying to accomplish, while Cross is forced to confront the personal guilt that drove him away from his profession in the first place. A sequel to ‘Kiss the Girls,’ the thriller film centers on a main character trying to stay ahead of an abductor who controls the situation through carefully calculated demands, similar to ‘The Runner.’
6. Stolen (2012)
Director Simon West’s ‘Stolen’ is an action thriller film that navigates the struggles of Will Montgomery (Nicolas Cage), a former bank robber trying to rebuild his life after a prison term. While ‘Stolen’ ties Alison’s kidnapping to Will’s criminal history, ‘The Runner’ similarly turns Maia’s profession as a lawyer against her, endangering her son. Both parents are forced to cross their own moral limits to rescue their kids before the clock runs out.
5. Ransom (1996)
In ‘Ransom,’ Tom Mullen (Mel Gibson) is an airline owner whose carefully built life is thrown into chaos when criminals abduct his young son. Tom initially agrees to cooperate and pay the huge ransom demanded for the boy’s return, while the FBI also becomes involved in the case. However, Tom begins to suspect that simply handing over the money may not guarantee his son’s safety. Appearing on television, Tom shockingly declares that the ransom will instead become a bounty for anyone who can bring the kidnappers to justice and secure his son’s release.
His gamble turns the tables on the criminals, but also places his family in an even more unpredictable situation. With Ron Howard in the director’s chair, the action thriller film is based on the movie ‘Ransom!’ and the TV play ‘Fearful Decision.’ While Maia in ‘The Runner’ is forced to obey dangerous instructions, Tom abandons the expected ransom arrangement and creates his own terms, offering an interesting contrast in actions between the two characters.
4. Taken (2008)
‘Taken’ is an English-language film that chronicles the experiences of Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson), a retired CIA operative who has stepped away from the agency to be closer to his teenage daughter, Kim Mills (Maggie Grace). When he reluctantly allows Kim to visit Paris with her friend Amanda (Katie Cassidy), his worst fears materialize after the girls are abducted by a gang. Kim manages to reach her father by phone before she is taken, giving Bryan only a few details about what happened.
Traveling from America to France, Bryan makes it clear to the kidnappers that he will stop at nothing to recover his daughter. When he employs a very particular set of skills against the kidnappers, chaos ensues. Pierre Morel steers this French action-thriller movie that captures the desperation of a parent, much like ‘The Runner.’ Maia is pushed through a series of instructions without knowing what awaits her, while Bryan has a rapidly shrinking window in which to find Kim.
3. Nick of Time (1995)
Brought to life by John Badham, ‘Nick of Time’ is the story of Gene Watson (Johnny Depp), an accountant whose life changes the moment he arrives at an LA train station with his six-year-old daughter, Lynn Watson (Courtney Chase). Two strangers, Smith (Christopher Walken) and Jones (Roma Maffia), pose as authorities before separating Gene from his child and presenting him with a deadly ultimatum. He is given a gun and a strict deadline to assassinate California Governor Eleanor Grant (Marsha Mason) during a scheduled public appearance at a hotel.
Trapped between the safety of his daughter and an impossible instruction, Gene must outsmart the people controlling him without putting Lynn’s life at risk. Similar to ‘The Runner,’ the political action thriller film extends far beyond the safety of the trapped child. Lynn’s situation forces Gene into a political assassination plot, while Noah’s kidnapping becomes the gateway into a much larger and more dangerous scheme.
2. Firewall (2006)
In ‘Firewall,’ Jack Stanfield (Harrison Ford) is a bank security specialist whose life is shattered when Bill Cox (Paul Bettany) and his criminal associates invade his home and take his family hostage. Cox knows that Jack has access to the bank’s security system and forces him to use it to transfer millions of dollars into their accounts. With his loved ones’ lives hanging in the balance, Jack has little choice but to cooperate, even though the transaction could destroy his career and make him appear responsible for the theft. But handing over the money does not end the ordeal. Cox intends to eliminate the family and erase every trace of the crime.
After surviving an attempt on his own life, Jack fights back and races to save his family before time runs out. Helmed by Richard Loncraine, the action thriller film captures the essence of ‘The Runner’ through its portrayal of a familial crisis. Maia’s legal background proves useful as she navigates an increasingly complex ordeal, while Jack’s knowledge of banking security is precisely what makes his family a target for criminals.
1. Kidnap (2017)
Crafted under the direction of Luis Prieto, ‘Kidnap’ is an action thriller film that puts single mother Karla Dyson (Halle Berry) at the center of a desperate pursuit when her six-year-old son, Frankie Dyson (Sage Correa), disappears during an ordinary outing. With her phone lost and no time to wait for help, Karla immediately gets behind the wheel and follows the kidnappers and her son onto the highway. What begins as a frantic attempt to keep Frankie within sight develops into a relentless chase, with Karla refusing to let the vehicle carrying her son escape.
Despite being a working-class mother with no special training, Karla relies on instinct and persistence, knowing that every moment spent pursuing the kidnappers could determine whether she sees Frankie again. ‘Kidnap’ and ‘The Runner’ are both fast-paced narratives that center on mothers who are given no choice but to act when their sons are abducted, thus connecting the two films on a thematic level as well.
