‘My Amish Double Life’ journeys an exciting path as it follows the story of a woman who seems to often be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Emma’s character retains a bright-eyed sense of wonder and innocence from the get-go, which makes her the perfect protagonist for such a mystery-filled tale. Furthermore, the classic Cinderella-type structure of her story lures the audience into a fake sense of familiarity and comfort. For the same reason, once the storyline kicks into its twisty ways, the audience is bound to find the narrative spellbinding. Similarly, the story seamlessly utilizes various successful red herrings, effectively subverting expectations at every turn.

As a result, the greatest tool in the tale’s arsenal remains its unpredictable yet cohesive storyline, which casts each character in set roles and masterfully plays around with them. However, the same also means certain moments of revelations/redemption for some characters—notably Caleb—arrive without much fanfare. Yet, the final reveal is satisfying enough for such issues to be easily overlooked. Ultimately, under the Cooper Harrington’s direction, the film offers an entertaining and unexpected story.

During an outing in the woods, during which Emma retreats to her family’s shed to retrieve a tool, her father dies after splitting his head open on a rock on the ground. Even though everyone believes his death to be caused by an accidental slip, the young woman insists she saw a shadow in the woods when she found the dead body. Nonetheless, no additional investigation takes place over the murder, even after the daughter consistently challenges the community elders, such as Bishop David. Around the same time, her childhood friend, Caleb, returns from his rumspringa and throws a surprise proposal at her. Remaining suspicious of his eccentric behavior, the woman turns him down.

Eventually, Emma finds a possible escape from these problems after she discovers that her friend, Rebecca, has been sneaking out of the community to blend in with the local people. Even though the other woman is reluctant about her ability to adapt to the change, she agrees to take her out to a club one night. Thus, the two women change out of their Amish attires and venture out into the city. Emma runs into some unwanted male attention at the venue and is swiftly rescued by Heath. As the two end up hitting it off with each other, Heath invites her to lunch the next day.

As the complications in her community continue due to their unwillingness to look into her father’s death, Emma finds herself slipping away into the city once again the next day. Over lunch, Keith reveals that he feels a deep connection with the other woman—something he hasn’t experienced since getting out of his long-term relationship. As a result, he invites her back to his house so that the two can spend more time together. However, shortly after their arrival, he gets called away to San Francisco for a business meeting. Yet, he decides to leave the woman alone in his house to explore in his absence.

Emma enjoys the various luxurious wonders at Heath’s house well into the evening until her relaxation is cut short by a noise. Consequently, she realizes that she is no longer alone in the house. In fact, an intruder seems to have broken in and killed another woman in the kitchen. Shortly after she finds the dead body, someone knocks her out—compelling her to wake up in the aftermath with a bloodied sickle in her hand. As a result, Emma decides to bolt away from the house, as she hides all evidence of her venture into the outside world. Yet, the night follows her soon after, as Heath returns home to find the dead body and contacts the local authorities. The evidence they gather brings them to the Amish community, where Heath seamlessly recognizes Emma as Jade, the woman he met in the club.

My Amish Double Life: Who Killed Emma’s Father and Heath’s Wife?

Initially, the death of Emma’s father can be written off as an actual accident despite the latter’s insistence otherwise. However, as misfortune follows the young woman and makes her the witness to yet another murder, it becomes difficult to overlook as a coincidence. After the truth about her expeditions comes out with the arrival of the detectives into the Amish village, Emma begins to suspect her own community of ill-intent. After she gives her statement to the police, she learns that Bishop David and the others are planning on excommunicating her from the village for breaking the rules of their existence. The same, paired with David’s interest in her family’s farm and land deed since her father’s death, strikes a suspicious chord for the woman.

Furthermore, Emma suspects Caleb of foul play due to his insistence on attempts at a courtship. Thus, through the mounting confusion, she realizes that her first course of action must be to convince Heath of her innocence. Even though she’s confused by the fact that the dead woman in his apartment was apparently his wife, she knows she can trust him not to be involved in the killing since he was on a plane during the time of the murder. Fortunately for her, Heath is willing to hear out her part of the story once she sneaks out of the village with her mother’s help. Consequently, the duo came up with the idea to check out his neighbor’s security camera footage to evaluate what really happened that night.

In the footage, Emma spots the shadow of a second figure, which compels her to assume Caleb must be the man behind the murder. The fact that she ran into the man in the woods on the night of the murder further reinforces her assumptions. Therefore, she and Heath decide to return to the Amish village to try to trick Caleb into confessing. Nonetheless, this venture only ends badly for Emma and even separates her from Heath. As a result, the woman has no choice but to return to her best friend, Rebecca, who has so far been a great help.

However, once Emma arrives at Rebecca’s house, she makes a startling discovery after finding Heath’s photograph and his dead wife’s earrings in the other woman’s basket. Thus, a horrifying realization begins to sink in. Rebecca and Heath have been in cahoots this entire time. Meanwhile, Heath digs out the sickle Emma had buried in the woods and attempts to plant it as evidence in her bedroom. Eventually, all of it culminates in a confrontation in the woods between Emma, her mother, Rebecca, and Heath. As it turns out, the latter have been secretly dating each other for some time now.

Nonetheless, they had to keep their relationship a secret because a clause in Heath’s company contracts states that if he cheated on his wife, she would inherit complete rights over the business. For the same reason, it posed a big problem for the couple when Emma’s father spotted them together in the woods. While Rebecca tries to convince the man to keep his silence, he eventually ends up tripping and falling to his death. From there, the couple realized that they could solve their problem by terminating Heath’s wife from the board in a similar manner. Consequently, they tricked Emma into being in the right place at the right time to make her into the murder suspect for Heath’s wife. However, in reality, it was Rebecca who had committed that murder as well.

Does Emma End Up With Caleb?

Even though Rebecca and Heath reveal the truth about the murders in the final showdown against Emma and her mother, the possibility of it amounting to nothing remains. After already committing two murders, the couple plans on resorting to further violence to finally arrive at their happy ending. As such, they plan to kill Emma and her mother, then let the story spin itself into a tragic tale about a troubled Amish girl killing her last surviving family and then committing suicide. Unfortunately for them, Emma isn’t as alone as she seems. Even though Caleb has been a suspicious character so far in the story, his faults were simple projections. Emma wanted to suspect someone, and he was simply the best target.

Nonetheless, all this time, Caleb has truly cared for Emma. Consequently, even after she runs away from him, he tracks her down after realizing something awful must be afoot. As such, he’s able to arrive in the nick of time and save Emma’s mother from Heath. Together, the three of them are able to overpower their attackers. In the end, Rebecca and Heath lose the fight, allowing Emma and the others to get the authorities involved. As such, the mystery behind the murders finally resolves itself, and Emma realizes she’s truly safe in her community. The wild turn of events also allows her the opportunity to see Caleb in a new light, leading to a relationship between the pair.
