The second season of Netflix’s ‘My Life With the Walter Boys’ brings Jackie Howard back to Silver Falls, Colorado, where she must confront her conflicting feelings for Alex and Cole Walter. The previous season ended on a complicated note with Alex telling Jackie he loves her and later, Jackie kissing Cole. Instead of dealing with this development, she leaves for New York, so when she comes back, things remain just as tangled. Halfway through the season, it seems that she might finally be able to clear things up, but the final episode brings her to the exact point where she was in the Season 1 finale. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Alex and Jackie’s Relationship Remains Haunted by Her Feelings for Cole
The second season begins with Alex tending to his broken heart. In the last season, he told Jackie he loves her, but instead of saying it back, she ran away to New York without saying goodbye. This led Alex to believe that perhaps he had said something wrong, or that Jackie was so terrified of being serious with him that she decided to run away instead. What he doesn’t know is that the same night he confessed his love to her, she ended up kissing Cole, which became too much for her to handle, on top of her already emotionally tumultuous situation. So, when Jackie returns, he decides to ice her out. This, however, does not mean that he is not in love with her anymore. It is because of his continued feelings that he continues to nurse his wound.
Things get better between them when Jackie finds Alex’s horse, which had been missing for a few days since the fire in the barn. The happiness of seeing his horse back safe and sound and the fact that Jackie was the one who found him make Alex want to forget all past transgressions and start anew with Jackie. He is even ready to forget that Jackie kissed Cole on the night of the wedding. While Alex is happy to have Jackie back, she is not so sure. She still has feelings for Cole, and considering that they still haven’t talked about the kiss, things remain unresolved between them. Still, she is happy to have made up with Alex again, and when he kisses her, she doesn’t mind. In fact, over the next couple of days, the duo meets and makes out in secret.
When Alex proposes the idea of officially being back together, Jackie hesitates at the possibility, and this is when he offers the part about keeping it a secret. While it does make things better for Jackie, he doesn’t understand why their relationship should be a secret. For that matter, neither do Grace and Erin when they find out that Jackie and Alex are back together. Both Grace and Erin question whether it has something to do with Cole, and while Jackie might not be ready to accept it yet, she knows in her heart that her feelings for the other Walter brother keep her from making it official again.
Jackie Confesses Her Love for Cole
When Alex and Jackie get back together, it doesn’t take Cole too long to reiterate his love for Jackie. She doesn’t immediately say it back, but she doesn’t run away either. It takes some time before she tells Alex that she loves him too, and for a moment, it seems that she has finally decided to be with Alex. But then, Cole finds out about them, which hurts his feelings, because when he tried to talk to Jackie about the kiss, she told him that she needed space. He believed that there had been something between them all along, and when they kissed, it would be an acknowledgement of those feelings. But then, Jackie left for New York, and when she came back, she refused to talk about it. Cole backed off, giving her the space and time she asked for.
So, when he sees her back with Alex, he is infuriated about her playing with his feelings and being with his brother again when there is clearly something between them still. At first, Cole starts to keep a distance from her, much like Alex did at the beginning of the season. But when she confronts him about the sudden change in his behaviour, he calls her out instead. He asks her why she went back to Alex when the conversation about their kiss and their feelings hadn’t happened yet. It doesn’t make sense to him that she would start the same cycle all over again, putting all three of them in a state of misery. This is where Jackie confesses that she has feelings for Cole and that the kiss with him was unlike anything she has ever experienced before.
It made her forget everything, all the problems and heartbreak that she had been through, and in a sense, it felt like losing control. The problem is that this feeling was so new and alien to Jackie that it scared her. She did not want to lose control, because she felt that this was the only thing she had now. While she remained drawn to Cole, she couldn’t act on her feelings or entertain the idea of being with him because it would mean that she would have to give up control. On top of this, she tells him that she loves him, and as she and Cole lean in for a kiss, Alex appears in the background. It turns out that he has heard everything, or at least the last part.
This would be the second time that Jackie has broken Alex’s heart due to Cole. When he said he was ready to forget all past mistakes to start anew, he assumed that Jackie didn’t have feelings for Cole anymore. Though, in her defense, she did tell him that things were complicated. Now that he has heard her profess her love for his brother, it seems unlikely that he will continue to entertain the idea of being with her. It seems that this would mark the end of their romance, secret or otherwise, and open the door for the third season to finally explore the bond between Jackie and Cole, and reveal what it looks like for them to be together. Does it mean they have received their happy ending? Probably not, as both Jackie and Cole need to sort out a lot of things on a personal level. But with both of their feelings out in the open, it is a good start.
