Naomi Irion was a young, ambitious woman living independently in Nevada with her older brother. All the dreams of the 18-year-old woman were shattered in March 2022, when she disappeared from the parking lot of a Walmart in Fernley. Her loved ones’ worst nightmare turned into reality when her remains were found a few weeks later. Despite the surveillance footage of the area where Naomi was last seen, the detectives had to dig deeper to identify the perpetrator. All the intricate details of the case are covered in Investigation Discovery’s ‘On the Case With Paula Zahn: Edge of the Abyss,’ which also features insightful interviews with Naomi’s family and friends.
Naomi Irion Went Missing From a Walmart Parking Lot in Fernley
Naomi Christine Irion was the beloved daughter of Herve Irion and Diana Irion, who gave birth to her on June 25, 2003, in Houston, Texas. In her formative years, Naomi moved across the world as her father worked for the US State Department as a diplomat. The Irion family lived in France, Russia, Germany, and South Africa, with Naomi attending middle school in Moscow and finishing high school at the American International School of Johannesburg. Growing up, she shared a close-knit bond with her sister Tamara Cartwright and three brothers, including Casey Valley. Passionate about music, Naomi loved singing and playing the ukulele and guitar.

After becoming an adult, Naomi returned to the United States and began living with her older brother, Casey. She landed a job at the Panasonic Plant in Sparks, Nevada, and was leading a content life. To get to work, she used to catch a bus from the Walmart parking lot in Fernley early in the morning. Around 5 am on March 12, 2022, the 18-year-old drove down to the Walmart parking lot, but didn’t catch the bus to her workplace. When she didn’t return home from work that evening, Casey called her workplace and learned she hadn’t shown up. As he couldn’t get in touch with her, he turned to the police. Per reports, they initially declined to launch an immediate search due to protocols for missing adults, but began investigating her disappearance.
About 12 hours after her abduction, her abandoned car was discovered in an industrial area in Fernley, just half a mile away from the Walmart parking lot. The detectives found no signs of a struggle inside the car. A couple of weeks later, on March 30, Naomi’s remains were found in a shallow grave in rural Churchill County, near Reno, Nevada. The medical examiner determined that the cause of her death was multiple gunshot wounds — one in the back of the head and one through the chest. The autopsy also revealed that the 18-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted before the shooting.
Naomi Irion’s Alleged Killer Was Apprehended With the Help of Surveillance Footage
Initially, Casey Valley took matters into his own hands and reviewed the security footage from the Walmart store where Naomi was last seen in the early hours of March 12, 2022. He spotted a masked man in a hoodie walking up to Naomi’s car, forcing his way inside, then driving away in it. After discovering Naomi’s abandoned car in the industrial area near Fernley, the authorities went through the surveillance footage of the area and noticed the suspect driving away in a dark Chevrolet Silverado High Country truck after parking Naomi’s car. Meanwhile, Casey told the police that she had gone out on a date with a man she had met online on a social media dating website the night before her abduction.

Looking into the person of interest, the detectives found him and dug deeper into his whereabouts during the kidnapping. It turned out that he was in Reno, Nevada, at the time of the abduction. Thus, he was cleared as a potential suspect. Soon, the authorities got a break in the case when they found the driver of the pickup truck that the suspect had driven. It belonged to Troy Edward Driver, who had already spent time behind bars for violent crimes in the past, including being an accessory to murder after the fact and committing armed robberies. They located the truck in Fallon, Nevada, and on March 25, 2022, he was arrested right outside his workplace in Reno, Nevada.
Troy Edward Driver Died Before His Trial Could Begin

At first, Troy Edward Driver was charged with kidnapping. But after Naomi Irion’s remains were found, he was also charged with first-degree murder, robbery, destruction of evidence, and burglary of a motor vehicle. Furthermore, in July 2022, he was charged with sexual assault as he had allegedly raped Naomi before shooting her to death. A few months later, in November, he was deemed mentally fit to stand trial for the murder. However, before he could appear in court, Troy took his own life by asphyxiation in his jail cell on August 6, 2023. He reportedly left behind a note, apologizing for the “darkness within” himself. He was declared dead after the medical personnel failed to revive him using multiple rounds of CPR.
