The Hollywood of the South is set to host the filming of another Tyler Perry film! Netflix’s religious drama ‘R&B’ will enter production in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 7 and conclude on November 1. Alanna Brown is directing the movie with a screenplay by Mike Elliott and Cory Tynan. Perry is producing the project with DeVon Franklin after they struck a deal with the streaming giant earlier this year.
Set against the backdrop of Tennessee, the film is a modern-day retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz. After her decision to walk away from a potential record deal leads to a tragic act of revenge, Ruth joins her late boyfriend’s mother, Naomi, and they leave Atlanta for a small town in Tennessee to start over from scratch. The only job she can find involves laboring at a local vineyard, which leads her to owner Bo “Boaz” Astra, who falls for her the moment he lays eyes on her. Ruth holds tight to her faith and slowly begins to accept love, but her past soon catches up with her.
Brown is known for directing Netflix’s period drama ‘Trees of Peace,’ which explores the lives of four women during the genocide against the Tutsi community in Rwanda. Elliott previously wrote projects such as ‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B,’ ‘Just Wright,’ and ‘Brown Sugar.’ Tynan’s credits include ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day,’ ‘Impact Earth,’ and ‘Everyday Life.’
Perry is gearing up for the release of Netflix’s period drama ‘Six Triple Eight,’ which brings to light the remarkable story of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black female unit in World War II. The film, led by Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey, showcases the battalion’s efforts to sort millions of undelivered letters in just three months. The filmmaker’s other upcoming project is Amazon Studios’ ‘Black, White & Blue,’ starring Meagan Tandy and Kat Graham. This film follows Fela Blackburn’s pursuit of justice after her husband dies at the hands of a police officer, diving into themes of deception and truth.
Many of Perry’s upcoming projects, including ‘Six Triple Eight,’ along with his recent movies such as ‘A Madea Homecoming’ and ‘A Jazzman’s Blues,’ were shot in Atlanta.
