Next Level Chef Season 5 Episode 13 Recap: A Toast to America’s 250th

All fire, flavors, and fierce ambition collide in Fox’s ‘Next Level Chef,’ where the chefs must prove their versatility across three drastically different kitchens. Guiding the contestants through this challenging journey are renowned judges/mentors: Gordon Ramsay, Richard Blais, and Nyesha Arrington. In season 5, episode 13, titled ‘A Toast to America’s 250th,’ the competition narrows down to six contestants after Danielle’s elimination. With the finale within reach, the contest takes a patriotic twist as the competitors must prepare classic American dishes with their own twist.

The Chefs Celebrate America’s 250th by Elevating Iconic Comfort Foods

The episode kicks off with the judges welcoming the contestants. Gordon quickly announces that today they are celebrating something very special, as this year marks America’s 250th birthday on July 4. It reminds everyone of the country’s classics, including mac and cheese, fried chicken, and smoked barbecue. Gordon then reveals that today, the chefs will have 30 minutes to create a plate of next-level appetizers. Richard promptly adds that the mentors are looking forward to tasting the elevated American classics. Based on the last challenge, Cole and Darian will be in the Top Kitchen with Gordon, while Gabrielle and Connor will prepare their food in the Middle Kitchen with Richard. Lastly, Christian and Andy will cook in the Basement Kitchen, with Nyesha overseeing the round.

Richard then asks Cole how she wishes to use her Time Token since she won it the last time. After much deliberation, she reveals that she has decided to use the 10 seconds for herself. Cole explains that if she can outcook everyone, she wants it to be on her own merit, not because her opponents felt they had a disadvantage. Every contestant finally makes their way to their respective kitchens. In the Basement, Christian pushes Andy to reach his station, only to pull a muscle in the process. His pain becomes evident when he begins limping to move around the kitchen. After the judges head to their respective kitchens, the ingredient grab begins in the Top Kitchen. Cole gets a 10-second head start with her Time Token, allowing her to take a good look at the ingredients and select the chicken lollipop as her protein.

Unlike her, Darian picks the filet, along with other ingredients, and begins wondering what he can make with them. In the Middle Kitchen, Gabrielle grabs the shrimp since she originally planned to make Maryland-style crab cakes. Now, she has to settle for making a shrimp cake. After the grab concludes in the Basement, the 30-minute countdown ultimately begins. Shortly after, Nyesha arrives at Christian’s station and learns that he is making pigs in a blanket. However, he is concerned because he actually has croissant dough. The judge quickly notices he is limping and remarks that it is time to run. In the Top Kitchen, Gordon approaches Darian, who is unable to explain his vision for his dish to the judge. Seeing him struggle, Gordon instructs him to use the lettuce cups to create an amazing canapé.

Gabrielle Scrambles to Rescue Her Dish While Christian and Darian Share Their Personal Journeys

In the Middle Kitchen, Richard arrives at Connor’s station and learns that the contestant loves celebrating the 4th of July holiday at the beach. The judge then moves on to Gabrielle, who reveals that on that particular holiday, she prefers to pay homage to her family roots. Richard promptly advises the contestant to keep the shrimp cakes in a beautiful shape and asks her not to make them larger than they already are. Eventually, the focus shifts to Christian, who reveals to Nyesha that the holiday is quite emotional for him because on that day, he proposed to his wife. In his confessional, the contestant divulges that she has always been his biggest supporter. It turns out that she is also the one who pushed Christian to join the competition, and he is doing this just for his wife.

Shortly after, a mid-round Ingredient Drop takes place, and Gordon announces that each contestant must create a wonderful cocktail or mocktail to celebrate the holiday. The grab begins in the Top Kitchen, moves to the Middle Kitchen, and ends in the Basement. When Nyesha sees that Christian has picked the ginger ale, she suggests that he make his own beverage with his cucumber. With 15 minutes already gone, Gabrielle checks her shrimp cakes and realizes that they need more breadcrumbs. She notices cracks in the middle of her dish and struggles to maintain its round, plump shape. Gabrielle becomes tense because she hoped to avoid this situation. When Richard notices that she is again starting to cook the shrimp cakes, he reminds her that she just needs three perfect portions.

As 5 more minutes pass by, the focus shifts to Darian. He tells Gordon that he grew up in Jamaica, where he used to play soccer, but he sadly injured his knee. Darian continues that the injury led him to stop playing sports and focus on cooking. While speaking to Gordon, Darian discloses that Gordon was the first chef he saw when the contestant began cooking. So, he is elated to chat with the judge and prepare his dish. Once the competitors begin preparing their cocktails, Nyesha points out to Christian that his appetizer lacks a sauce. She adds that since he has time on his hands, he can prepare a beautiful sauce. With just 5 minutes left on the clock, Gabrielle finally manages to salvage her shrimp cakes. Richard promptly reminds her to put the caviar on top of the cake.

Critical Reviews During the Tasting Round Help Connor Win the Time Token

In the final few minutes, Cole decides to put caramelized onion flavor inside her cocktail. Although she admits that it isn’t normal, she thinks it will pair well with her chicken lollipops. In the meantime, Christian tastes his sauce and realizes it needs to be thicker. While blending, his attention briefly shifts to Andy, and in the process, around 90% of his sauce falls on him and the ground. After checking the situation, Nyesha tastes the remaining sauce and notes it is salty. She quickly asks Christian to add a little oil and a bit of sweetness. As the time comes to an end, the contestants finish plating their dishes and place them on the platform. The tasting round commences with Cole’s chicken lollipops from the Top Kitchen. Both Richard and Nyesha praise the preparations, with Richard noting that the drink goes well with the dish.

Next up is Darian’s filet lettuce cup, but when Richard tries to pick it up, he has trouble because some of the meat falls onto the plate. All three mentors compliment its taste, but Nyesha points out the difficulty in eating the preparation. The next turn is for Connor’s lobster pupusa from the Middle Kitchen. As soon as Gordon and Richard taste it, they highly praise its elegance. As the judges try Gabrielle’s Maryland-inspired shrimp cake, they struggle to pick it up. Nyesha points out that although it tastes good, a little less breading while forming the patties would improve the dish. Gordon also remarks that the dish is not practical with less binding agent because it crumbles when he tries to pick it up. However, he adds that it’s a smart choice to add caviar to the dish.

It is now the turn for Andy’s pastrami pork slider from the Basement. Both Richard and Gordon compliment the contestant’s smart approach alongside the dish’s incredible taste. Lastly, the judges taste the pigs-in-a-blanket prepared by Christian. Richard remarks that he loves the cocktail and the bread preparation, but points out that the sauce is broken. On the other hand, Gordon observes that he would prefer the sauce on the side because putting it on the plate makes the appetizers soggy. The judges then excuse themselves to discuss the dishes they have just tasted. After much consideration, Nyesha announces that the two standout dishes were cooked by Connor and Cole. Today, the winner of the Time Token is Connor. Gordon then announces that the two dishes heading to elimination were cooked by Christian and Gabrielle.

The Elimination Battle Ends With Christian’s Exit Due to Significant Mistakes

Gordon reveals that for tonight’s elimination cook-off, Christian and Gabrielle must prepare their own take on a stunning burger-and-fries dish that can be served in a high-end restaurant and represents America. The contestants will have 25 minutes to cook their elevated burgers. Christian and Gabrielle, along with the other contestants, head to the kitchen. Once Gordon arrives there, the ingredient grab finally begins. During the grab, Gabrielle asks everyone if they can see mayonnaise since she needs it. Meanwhile, upon hearing her, Christian takes the component for himself. Once the clock begins ticking, Gordon turns his attention to Gabrielle. He asks her to focus on her patty and press it evenly to ensure it cooks evenly. The judge then asks both competitors to properly season their patties.

As the time comes down to the final 8 minutes, Gabrielle checks her sauce and realizes it will seep onto the burger bun. While she tries to handle the situation, Christian realizes that he has forgotten his bun on the pan in the last 5 minutes. Although his bun is burnt, he fortunately salvages the dish since he has an extra bun from his grab. In the meantime, Gabrielle also manages to rectify her sauce. As the final few seconds tick away, both contestants finish plating their dishes. Once Richard and Nyesha arrive in the kitchen, they first taste a classic American short rib burger. While Nyesha remarks that the patty sear is inconsistent, Richard points out that the burger is imbalanced. They next move on to Gabrielle’s brisket patty burger. Nyesha quickly compliments its visuals, while Richard praises its creativity and the pickle’s acidity.

Nyesha then adds that although the burger is made with an interesting approach, she wishes it had a little bit of balance. Ultimately, both Nyesha and Richard reveal that they want to eliminate Christian’s burger, eliminating him from the competition. Gordon notes that the contestant has been an absolute powerhouse from the beginning. In his exit interview, Christian expresses that this has been the most exhilarating experience of his life. He will never forget this moment, as it’s embedded within him as a chef. Once Christian bids everyone goodbye, Gordon instructs the remaining Top 5 chefs to get some rest. He adds an intriguing message, stating, “Because next time, the goal is to kick things up a notch,” creating suspense for what is to come in the following episode.
