Who Killed Nicky Caccimelio in Only Murders in the Building?

The fifth season of Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ takes the audience back to the Arconia as Charles, Oliver, and Mabel solve another crime. This time, it is a double homicide, and one of the victims is Nicky Caccimelio. The mob boss turns out to be deeply connected to the Arconia, and the mystery of his murder is related to the death of Arconia’s doorman, Lester. After weeks of mystery, the protagonists finally stumble upon something that gives them a major clue as to what may have happened to Nicky. SPOILERS AHEAD.

A Shocking Truth About Nicky’s Death Comes to Light

At the end of Episode 7, footage from the building’s CCTV reveals that Randall, the new doorman who had been training under Lester, was in the courtyard the night Lester died. He is seen picking up the bloodied doorknob, which he hid in Nicky’s office in the underground gaming parlor, where it is eventually found by Loretta. As the detective trio confronts Randall, he runs away and is nowhere to be found. After several weeks, he posts a photo on Instagram that shows he is in Cuba, but the truth about it comes out when Mabel and Donna find another secret door in the gaming parlor, which connects it to Nicky’s laundry shop.

Here, Mabel finds the picture that served as Randall’s background in the photo and realizes that he is still in the building. Randall is found to be hiding in an empty apartment, and once again, he tries to run from Charles, Mabel, and Oliver, but this time, he is apprehended, thanks to Theo, who bumps into him while entering the building. With no way out and the residents of the building demanding answers, he reveals that he didn’t kill Lester and hid the doorknob because he was simply doing what Lester asked him to do.

His story is corroborated by LESTR the robot, who shows them the recording of the night of Lester’s death. It shows Lester coming to Randall, with blood on his clothes and the bloodied doorknob in his hands. Randall is alarmed by the sight, and when he asks Lester if he killed someone, the doorman simply says that he saved the building and that he couldn’t turn a blind eye to everything that was going on in the building anymore. With this, it seems that Lester is the one who killed Nicky. He seems to have the motive as well as the opportunity. However, there is a good chance that there is much more to the story.

Lester’s Guilt in Nicky’s Murder is Not Proven Beyond Doubt

Things are not usually what they seem in ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ which is why it seems rather fishy to discover that Lester killed Nicky. While LESTR’s recording may serve as proof that the late doorman murdered the mob boss, it must be noted that he doesn’t confess to it or accept responsibility for it in straight terms. All he says is that he has saved the building, and that could mean all sorts of things. While the blood on his clothes and on the doorknob in his hands shows that he was involved in the death, it is yet to be confirmed whether he killed Nicky with his own hands. The final episode of the series is set to shed light on the whole matter, and there is a good possibility that the real killer might turn out to be someone else.

It is possible that Nicky was killed by someone else who also wants to save the building, and Lester just helped them dispose of the body. Perhaps he told them of the secret door that leads to the laundry, allowing them to move the body from the parlor. But to think that sweet, birdwatching Lester murdered someone in cold blood remains rather unimaginable still. This brings the rest of the suspects back into play, most notably the three billionaires whose true involvement in the case remains to be fully revealed. This also explains why Lester advised Randall not to ask any questions and look the other way (which is ironic, because Lester himself said he couldn’t look the other way anymore moments ago), because he knows that anyone who asks questions regarding the case will have to face powerful forces.

Despite being involved in Nicky’s murder, or at least in hiding the body, Lester still wants the truth to come to light, which is why he, most likely, hid the severed finger in Oliver’s wedding shrimp. He wanted the finger to be found so that the trio could take the case, giving it a much better chance of being solved. Perhaps this is what Lester was referring to when he said he’d saved the building. He knew that once the killer’s identity came out, any deals regarding the building would become null and void. That makes it even more evident that the billionaires have something to do with it, and the real killer is yet to be apprehended.
