Nore Davis has created a sitcom! Moviedelic has learned that the actor-comedian is writing and directing ‘Grownchild?’ The six-episode comedy series will start filming in Yonkers, New York, in late September.
The plot follows a spoiled man-child who is on the verge of becoming homeless and trying to reconnect with his estranged family. But in his desperation, he is alienating most of them. After his mother, who used to handle everything for him, passes away, Matthew struggles with adult responsibilities like paying bills and renewing his license. He is evicted from his apartment by his landlord two years after her death. To get a roof over his head, he reaches out to his father, Bernard, who has wanted nothing to do with him since the former left the latter to make funeral arrangements by himself. Yet he uses his father’s soft spot for his eleven-year-old daughter, Lelani, to nudge his way into his father’s home.
The narrative progresses with Lelani realizing that she is being used as a pawn by her father. She is already in a fragile relationship with Matthew, which deteriorates further. Even though she seems like the sweetest girl, Lelani is a tempest of insults and curses when she is around her father, often appearing more mature than he is. Matthew resorts to goofy parenting in an effort to win her over, which makes his girlfriend of one year, Brandi, begin to distance herself from him. Matthew will have to make amends with his daughter and father while learning to take responsibility for his life and relationships. The show is expected to have modern but tame humor similar to ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘Survival of the Thickest.’
Davis is a stand-up comedian and actor who most recently co-wrote and directed ‘Element,’ a solo comedic show film with a theme of finding his inner child. He starred as Sid in Freevee’s ‘Puppy Love,’ a doctor in Showtime’s ‘ZIWE,’ and Solomon in Apple TV+’s ‘Dickinson.’ He is also set to appear in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s ‘Survival of the Thickest,’ which follows a plus-sized fashion designer finding her place in the industry and navigating challenging relationships.
Just north of New York City, Yonkers offers a combination of urban and suburban environments. Its scenic riverside neighborhoods, historic sites, and Hudson River backdrop could provide a distinctive setting for ‘Grownchild?’ that will likely include the hustle of city life and the laid-back vibe of a more residential area. Other comedic works filmed in the city include ‘Zoolander,’ ‘Big Daddy,’ ‘The Oranges,’ and ‘Rescue Me.’
