As Netflix’s ‘Olympo‘ centers on young athletes training in a high-end sports institute named HPC Pyrenees, matters of the heart are often a topic of discussion throughout the series. This particularly comes to the fore in the case of Roque, whose sexual orientation comes under huge scrutiny in the Spanish press owing to the toxic culture within the HPC Pyrenees. As such, the character has to navigate the unfair judgments of people as he tries to live his life freely without others seeking to repress him. To that end, Roque starts to find solace in a member of his rugby team named Sebas, who also struggles with the highly competitive and critical nature of the athletics business. As a result, the duo go through a variety of ups and downs in a bid to realize their true selves in a more openly embraced manner by the end of the inaugural season. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Roque and Sebas Have Different Stances on Coming Out as Gay
In ‘Olympo,’ both Roque and Sebas are gay even though they have completely different attitudes when it comes to accepting it as part of their identity. The former is largely positive about his sexual orientation, seeing it as a natural and organic part of his life. However, Sebas tries to mask his sexuality, fearing judgment and mockery from his fellow teammates on the rugby squad. Their disparate beliefs are indicative of the underlying tensions in HPC Pyrenees to succeed at all costs and to make sure that one does not stick out for unorthodox perspectives. As such, Sebas hides being gay by making out with girls at any social event, which makes him fit the norm. However, Roque has no concern about toeing the line and often makes himself a target for his robust attitude.
After airing his sexuality through a social media post, Roque is turned into public enemy number one inside the halls of HPC Pyrenees by not just his teammates but also his coach. Subsequently, the star rugby player finds himself constantly benched in major tournaments for no reason other than a vindictive and prejudicial viewpoint from the coach. However, when things get rough during a critical match that could determine qualification, the coach asks Roque to step up and showcase his skills. He goes on to help his team achieve victory, which leads to a media furor around him and his gay identity. People try to use his sexuality as a way to gain social points in the eyes of the public and to appear progressive, a political ploy that frustrates Roque. Yet, despite the challenges, he prefers his sexual identity to be accepted as a part of him rather than run away from it.
Later in the narrative, Roque realizes that his gay identity is being weaponized by organizations such as Olympo and a documentary being filmed on HPC Pyrenees, as people try to highlight their own virtuosity by pushing the limelight on him. As such, Roque starts to question the validity of Olympo backing him as one of their athletes. Eventually, this race to the bottom ends with him hurting Sebas by lying to him about the documentary-maker’s agenda to show Roque kissing Sebas. Despite knowing that Sebas prefers to keep his sexual orientation private, Roque allows it to be aired publicly, taking the initiative away from him. As such, their relationship breaks down, and the two come to blows over their diametrically opposed stances on coming out as gay.
Roque and Sebas Find Their Way Back to One Another
Following the public revelation about Sebas’ gay identity through the documentary, Roque and Sebas end up in a tough spot even though they are clearly attracted to one another and supportive of each other away from any prying eyes. However, after the seeming betrayal of Roque to out Sebas in such a humiliating way, it seems unlikely that the gap between the two will ever be bridged. Additionally, Sebas also sees the ugly side of Roque when the latter takes out Charly in an incredibly violent fashion that also leaves him unconscious. It becomes evident to Sebas at this point that Roque is putting his life in danger by taking drugs from Olympo. Furthermore, he is mad that his secret lover would have no moral scruples over tilting the odds in his favor when it comes to the integrity of sports in general.
At the end of the season, Roque and Sebas manage to hash out their differences due to a series of profuse apologies from the former. After seeing what Olympo is capable of and realizing that he has been turned into a guinea pig for their experimental drugs, Roque begs Sebas to come back to him. Initially, the latter remains angry with Roque for everything he did. However, upon hearing that his lover is willing to turn his back on Olympo and take the fight to them, Sebas realizes that something has changed within Roque profoundly. As such, the two finally find a middle point where they can extend their support for each other. It culminates in a passionate kiss witnessed by Zoe, who is just as happy as them to see them reunited. Therefore, at the end of season 1, we see them back in each other’s arms.
