Overacting Ending Explained: Does Winai Capture Sua Hao?

‘Overacting’ or ‘Kaeng Owoe’ is a Thai action-comedy film that centers on Winai, a retired, aging Thai police officer whose memory is beginning to fail and whose heart is unstable. His daughter, Woranuch, AKA Nuch, dreams of becoming an actress and also runs a modeling agency. After an accident, Winai wakes up convinced he is still a police officer. Hoping to protect him from further distress, Nuch enlists her friends to help her set up a fake police station where Winai can continue to pretend to be a cop and give orders to fake subordinates.

Winai’s greatest ambition is to capture Sua Hao, a notorious criminal, in a dramatic, Bollywood-style showdown filled with exaggerated action and charm. As Nuch and her friends help sustain his fantasy, they find themselves caught up in an unusual adventure shaped by Winai’s memories, his love of policing, and his larger-than-life dream of bringing a criminal to justice. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Overacting Plot Synopsis

Winai is an aging man and a retired Thai cop who lives with his caring daughter, Woranuch, AKA Nuch. She is an aspiring actress who also runs a failing modeling agency. After appearing for many auditions, Nuch has almost given up hope of making it big. She is supported by her friends Khe, Bo, and Xing, who are also failed actors. Winai mourns the loss of his ex-wife, Ranee, who was from India. Winai and Ranee fell in love a long time ago, and he still runs a fabric shop named after her. He has an unstable heart and a rapidly deteriorating memory, which makes him vulnerable to surprising moments.

Winai’s only real passion is Bollywood movies and their over-the-top action sequences. He frequently dreams about chasing criminals like a Bollywood hero and bringing them to justice. In his time as a police officer, Winai was unable to capture Sua Hao, a dreaded criminal, which remains his greatest regret. After Winai has a minor heart attack, he wakes up at the hospital believing that he is still a police officer. The doctors inform Nuch that Winai may not respond well to shock and that he must be kept calm at all costs.

Since Winai genuinely believes he is still a cop, Nuch reaches out to her ex-boyfriend, a traffic cop named Toy, for help. Toy, Nuch, and her friends set up a fake police station where Winai can live out his fantasies and give orders to juniors. Nuch and her friends also dress up like cops to convince Winai that he is actually leading a unit of his own. Winai oversees a few fake missions and starts feeling alive again. But things take an unexpected turn when Winai learns that Sua Hao is still active and has been evading the police for some time. Determined to finish what he started many years ago, Winai swears that he will capture Sua Hao, irrespective of the dangers involved.

Overacting Ending: Does Winai Capture Sua Hao? How Does Winai Die?

When news that Sua Hao is still active reaches Winai, he grows determined to take him down. The old rivalry resurfaces, and Winai springs back into action in Bollywood style. However, given his condition, Nuch devises a plan to make Winai believe he has indeed captured Sua Hao. Nuch and her friends hire a double to play Sua Hao and stage a fake confrontation on a sunflower field. Winai gets word that Sua Hao is on the run and reaches the sunflower field with Nuch. However, the staged confrontation goes disastrously wrong when Winai suspects the body double’s identity and the on-set blood rig fails. After deducing that the body double is not Sua Hao, Winai convinces himself that the real criminal used the double to distract him. When Winai gives chase, Sua Hao miraculously manages to escape.

Later, the real cop, Padej, arrives at the scene and tells Winai that he is living a delusion. After hearing that he is no longer a cop and has been retired for many years, Winai collapses. Later, Padej and his team are hoodwinked by Sua Hao, who corners them in a dilapidated building. An injured Padej arrives at the hospital where Winai is still unconscious. The doctors inform Nuch that Winai had less than a month to live, as his heart and memory will completely fail. Padej, his team, Nuch, her friends, and the doctors sing about the bravery of Thai cops, which inspires Winai to break out of his coma. He wakes up believing yet again that he is an active cop and swears to capture and kill Sua Hao. What follows is an action-packed chase sequence that defies physics and logic, just as Winai desired.

In purely Bollywood style, Winai chases Sua Hao on a bike, and the two men test their egos. Winai even takes his bike underwater and survives multiple threats to stay in the chase. His Bollywood fantasy keeps getting intense as he closes in on Sua Hao. Finally, on a deserted stretch of the highway, Winai and Sua Hao face each other, and the fake cop overpowers the real criminal. However, pretending to surrender, Sua Hao stabs Winai. Soon, Toy arrives with Nuch and her friends and sees what’s unfolding. Toy shoots Sua Hao and kills him instantly. As Nuch rushes to Winai, he dies next to her, happy that he has finally captured Sua Hao.

Does Nuch Become a Successful Actress?

After Winai’s death, Nuch celebrates his legacy and overcomes her grief. Though she misses him dearly, she understands that he went away exactly as he wanted to. A few days after the highway chase, Nuch receives a call from a Bollywood casting director, who wants her to audition for an important role. Having dreamt of being a proper actress throughout her life, and failing many auditions, Nuch is overwhelmingly happy for the Bollywood opportunity.

The casting director also informs her that her audition was made possible only because of a video recorded and sent to the casting agency. When Nuch watches the video, she sees herself practicing fighting and other skills. She gets emotional when she realizes that it was Winai who recorded this video, spoke highly of her skills, and sent the video to the casting agency. It is likely that Nuch will get other opportunities as she goes on, which will help her become a successful actress.

What Happens in the Mid-Credits Sequences?

In the mid-credits sequences, Toy gets promoted by Padej and is pleased to see his efforts getting the recognition they deserve. We also see moments from the past, where Winai danced with Ranee in India. Nuch and her friends get recognized by the owner at the café they regularly visit. She remembers them as the child actors who appeared in the “Wonder Four” TV advertisements many years ago. Nuch and her friends are happy to see that whatever they did in the past has not been meaningless. Toy introduces his new girlfriend to Nuch, and chaos ensues. Since Nuch and Toy dated in the past, the new girlfriend believes that he is only dating her now to impress Nuch and make her jealous. The new girlfriend storms away, leaving Toy in a hilarious situation again, as Nuch starts laughing.
